    Notes: Abstract In this research the wood-rotting fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium culture was shown to be immobilized very well on the porous foam material. The biomass concentration increased to about 2–3 g/l in 4–5 days. Repeated-batch decolorization tests using immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium cells were conducted for 16 days with initial concentrations of 50–500 ppm of Red 533 dispersed dye, a decolorization efficiency of 80% or higher was achieved within a period of one or two days. The ability of the immobilized culture to perform a long-term decolorization operation was confirmed.

    Notes: Structures are assemblies of planar and three-dimensional objects. Planar components and parts are commonly because the deformation behaviors of plates and beams can be analyzed within the plane problem framework. For micron-scale structures, patterning processes in microfabrications are intrinsically planar and the resulting fabricated structures are also planar. These planar micron-scale structures have been designed and analyzed using conventional mechanics, but increasingly as the sizes of these structures become smaller, higher order effects become significant. In nanometer-scale, surfaces were recognized to play significant roles in affecting the physical behavior. Size dependent elastic and plastic deformation behaviors in micron-scale structures were also observed. Size dependence is an intrinsic part of higher order theory of mechanics and has been used successfully to explain scale dependent behavior in threedimensional structures. In this paper, two-dimensional higher order elastic relations in plane stress and plane strain for compressible solids are developed. The difference between the higher order and conventional elasticity theories is compared

    Notes: To quantify the effect of structural through-thickness reinforcement in foam core sandwichcomposite panels, an experimental study was carried out which included three-point bending tests,core shear tests, flatwise tensile and compression tests, as well as edgewise compression tests.Standard test procedures based on ASTM guidelines are followed to test the behavior of the stitchedpanels with reinforcement at 90 degree orientation with respect to the sandwich faces. The testspecimens were manufactured by using polyurethane foam Rohacell 71 IG and carbon fiberreinforced composite facesheets. The dry perform facesheets and foam core were then assembled in adry lay-up already stitched. Kevlar 29 yarn was used to stitch both sets of panels. The results showeda significant effect of the stitching on the in-plane Young’s modulus which was attributed to localdisplacements of the in-plane fibers and changes in the fiber volume fraction. Stitching of sandwichpanels significantly increases the maximum failure loads under flexure, core shear, flatwise tensile,flatwise compression, and edgewise compression loading.A finite element based unit-cell model was developed to estimate the elastic constants ofstructurally stitched foam core sandwich composite panels taking into consideration the yarndiameter, the stitching pattern and direction as well as the load direction. Depending on theseparameters, local changes of the fiber volume fraction as well as regions with undisturbed anddisturbed fiber orientations within the laminate plies are taken into account. A good match betweenthe finite element modeling and the experimental data was obtained. The present work should beconsidered as a step towards developing a more sophisticated numerical model capable ofdescribing mechanical behavior of sandwich structures

    Notes: The crystal structure of gpD, the capsid-stabilizing protein of bacteriophage λ, was solved by multiwavelength anomalous diffraction (MAD) for a selenomethionine (SeMet) derivative of the protein at 1.8 Å resolution, using crystals in space group P21 [Yang et al. (2000), Nature Struct. Biol. 7, 230–237]. Subsequent analysis showed that the crystals of both the original protein and the SeMet derivative were pseudo-merohedrally twinned with a twinning fraction ∼ 0.36, owing to the near-identity of the a and c axes. An analysis of the crystal structure solution is presented and the utility of twinned crystals for solving the structure using MAD and of different phasing strategies is discussed; the results obtained with several software packages are compared.

    Notes: The aging of insulators often results in corona discharge, and the measurement of the ultraviolet light (UV-light) can be used to detect insulator defects. This paper introduces a new tester, the ultraviolet detector, which can detect defective insulators by measuring the UV-light from the discharging insulators. Some tests were carried out. The results indicated that the detector can identify the existence of corona discharge with good performance. And it can be used for discharge detection of power system and transformer substation.

    Notes: Abstract Calcium regulation in the human heart is impaired during idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC). Here, we analyze the structural basis for impairment in the regulatory mechanism. Regulation of contractility was monitored by MgATPase and Ca2+-binding assays as a function of calcium. Myofibrillar proteolysis and expression of troponin T isoforms were established by gel electrophoresis and by Western blots. Myofibrillar ATPase assays in low salt however, revealed a drastic lowering of calcium sensitivity in IDC myofibrils as indicated by reductions in both activation by high calcium and in EGTA-mediated inhibition of MgATPase. Structural changes in myofilament proteins were found in most IDC hearts, specifically proteolysis of myosin light chain 2 (LC2), troponin T and I (TnT and TnI), and sometimes large isoform shift in TnT. IDC did not induce mutations in LC2 and troponin C (TnC), as established by cDNA sequence data from IDC cases, thus, calcium binding to IDC myofibrils was unaffected. Reassociation of IDC myofibrils with native LC2 raised MgATPase activation at high Ca2+ to control levels, while repletion with intact, canine TnI/TnT restored inhibition at low Ca2+. A model, identifying possible steps in the steric blocking mechanism of regulation, is proposed to explain IDC-induced changes in Ca2+-regulation. Moreover, shifts in TnT isoforms may imply either a genetic or a compensatory factor in the development and pathogenesis of some forms of IDC.
