Notes: Abstract —We constructed a three-dimensional finite element model to simulate coseismic and postseismic displacement and stress fields associated with the 1993 Kushiro-oki earthquake, which was a very large intermediate-depth earthquake that occurred within the subducted Pacific plate at a depth of 107 km beneath the southeastern part of Hokkaido, Japan. Taking the configuration of the subducted Pacific plate into account, we constructed a realistic model with lateral heterogeneity of viscoelastic structure. We assigned a variable slip distribution to the fault plane, which was obtained from inversion analysis of near-field seismic waveforms. The result shows that elastic deformation associated with the faulting reflects the assigned inhomogeneous slip distribution on the fault plane near the fault region, while it does not reflect the distribution on the free surface of the model. The calculated postseismic deformation does not reflect the slip distribution, but shows symmetric spatial patterns concerning the dipping direction of the fault both near the fault region and on the model surface. For the next 20 years following the earthquake, the amount of the calculated deformation is a fraction of the coseismic deformation. The calculated coeseismic deformation is large just above and below the fault plane, reaching 1 m, while the postseismic deformation is dominant near the upper and lower material boundaries between the subducted plate and the surrounding asthenosphere. The spatial distribution of maximum shear stress near the fault plane corresponds to the assigned slip distribution, amounting to 32 MPa. The directions of principal stress-change axes represent reverse fault type in the SSE region of the fault, whereas normal fault type is dominant in the NNW region with the exception of some asymmetrical spatial patterns of the principal stress-change axes on the fault due to the inhomogeneous slip distribution. Time variations both in the amount and the directions of stresses are minor, suggesting that the coseismic state of the stress would remain unchanged for two decades after the event.

Notes: Abstract. Objective: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a potent and pleiotropic stimulator of immune cells, binds to neutrophils via CD14, but less densely than to monocytes. The present study was designed to investigate whether cytokines modulate LPS binding to neutrophils via CD14.¶Methods: Neutrophils were cultured with LPS after pretreatment with cytokines, interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1α), or granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF). Binding of LPS and CD14 expression on neutrophils were analyzed by flow cytometry, using anti-LPS and anti-CD14 monoclonal antibodies (mAb).¶Results: LPS alone showed only slight binding to neutrophils, but pretreatment with IFN-γ or TNF-α before LPS exposure markedly increased LPS binding and CD14 expression on the surfaces of neutrophils. The dramatic increase in LPS binding was not seen with IL-1α or G-CSF. Anti-CD14 blocking mAb completely inhibited the binding effect.¶Conclusions: These results demonstrate that IFN-γ and TNF-α enhance LPS binding to neutrophils via CD14, suggesting that the priming effect of cytokines on neutrophils is important for LPS binding.

Notes: Abstract —We investigated the effects of various viscoelastic structures on postseismic surface displacement and principal strain fields associated with the great 1946 Nankaido earthquake, which occurred on the plate boundary between the subducting Philippine Sea plate and the continental Eurasian plate. For this purpose, we constructed two kinds of three-dimensional structural models using the finite element method one is the Layered Model, in which a semi-infinite Maxwell viscoelastic material is underlying an elastic layer, and the other is the more realistic Plate Model, in which the three-dimensional configuration of the subducted Philippine Sea plate is taken into account. We also considered two cases with different thicknesses of the elastic layer (50 and 33km) for the respective models. The difference between the two models in postseismic surface deformations is significant for the case with the thinner elastic layer. In this case the horizontal surface displacement and principal strain for the Layered Model is two to three times larger than those for the Plate Model. Downward surface deformation tends to be dominant for the Layered Model, while the change in the pattern for the Plate Model is less marked. The spatial extent of uplift and subsidence for the Plate Model is broader than that for the Layered Model. Postseismic vertical displacements in Shikoku were found to be strongly dependent on the viscoelastic structures. From these results, we suggest that the estimates of the viscosity of the uppermost mantle, interplate coupling, and the area and the amount of after-slip following the 1946 Nankaido earthquake, which have been estimated based on simple layered viscoelastic models, should be re-evaluated using realistic three-dimensionally heterogeneous viscoelastic structures.

Notes: Summary This study was undertaken to define the clinical features of moyamoya disease in sibling relations less than 15 years of age. We analysed five pairs of siblings (6 boys, 4 girls) with moyamoya disease from among 56 moyamoya patients less than 15 years of age. Of 56 paediatric patients with moyamoya disease, 5 were sibling pairs. At onset of the disease, all patients were under 10 years of age. Clinical manifestations in the proband and the affected sibling tended to present as transient ischaemic attacks; none of the 10 patients presented with intracranical haemorrhage. The probands were not always the older sibling, however, the time lapse between disease onset in the proband and his/her sibling was less than one year. Among the sibling pairs, there was no striking difference in disease staging based on angiographic findings. The incidence of sibling occurrence of moyamoya disease appears to be higher than previously assumed and the family of children with moyamoya disease should be cautioned that their other children have an increased risk of developing the illness.
