Notes: We studied Pr substitution for Y in a 123 high Tc superconductor related system, Y1−xPrxBa2Fe3O8 using of x-ray diffraction, magnetization, and 57Fe transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy. The Fe sublattices are magnetically ordered through the whole system. The Pr substitution, however, suppressed the Fe ordering temperature. The low temperature susceptibility across the system increases with increased Pr concentration x, and an additional antiferromagnetic ordering at 24 K is observed for x=1, indicating a possible Pr ordering. The averaged magnetic hyperfine field at Fe sites measured at 15 K is also reduced as x increases. The dramatic effect of Pr substitution for Y in this system, which is not observed in studies of Y substitution by other rare-earth elements, is interpreted as the effect of the hybridization between the Pr 4-f electrons and the electrons in the Fe(2)O2 layers, similar to the Pr hybridization in Y1−xPrxBa2Cu3O7−y system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Measurable hydraulic forces towards the pulp chamber can occur whilst cementing a crown. This study investigated the effect of crown venting and the use of two different seating forces (100 and 2·5 N) on pulpward pressure transmission. Forty single-rooted premolar teeth were collected from patients requiring extractions for orthodontic reasons. A standardized crown preparation was made and impressions taken to construct individual base-metal alloy crowns. The teeth were divided into four groups based on the type of crown (vented or non-vented) and force used (100 or 2·5 N). The teeth mounted on a specially constructed stand and connected to a 0–104 kPa pressure transducer. The pulp chamber was perfused with saline driven by nitrogen gas at 83 kPa for up to 2 h until a steady state perfusion rate was achieved. Crowns were cemented to the teeth on a uniaxial seating device using zinc phosphate cement. Simultaneous recordings of both pressure pulse and seating discrepancies were recorded. The 40-fold increase in seating force from 2·5 to 100 N resulted in a significant increase (P〈0·001) in pulpward pressure in both vented and non-vented crowns. Seating was also significantly improved for the vented crowns regardless of which force was used. Venting had no significant effect on pulpward pressure transmission. It was concluded that a significant relationship existed between seating force and pulpward pressure transmission. Venting improved crown seating but did not have a demonstrable effect on pulpward pressure transmission.

Notes: USn3 is a highly enhanced paramagnet and close to a magnetic instability. Whereas UPb3 has an antiferromagnetic transition at 31 K and the 5f electrons appear to be more localized. Both USn3 and UPb3 crystallize in the Cu3Au structure and complete pseudobinary alloys can be prepared. The temperature dependence of the specific heat C(T) for 1.5≤T≤50 K and magnetic susceptibility χ(T) for 1.8≤T≤ 400 K has been measured on U(Sn1−xPbx)3 for 0≤x≤1.0. Both χ(T) and C(T) data indicate that the substitution of Sn for Pb in UPb3 (i.e., decreasing x) causes the Neel temperature TN to increase initially to 38 K for x≈0.7 then decrease with TN→0 for x=0.07. The electronlike contribution to C(T) as T→0 remains high in the magnetically ordered state with the electronic specific heat coefficient γ for UPb3 ≈173 mJ/mol K2. The magnetic entropy removal below TN for UPb3 is ∼2−3 J/mol K, i.e., is smaller than expected for a U3+ or U4+ free ions and even for U3+ with a doublet ground state.

Notes: UNiSn, as well as certain other ternary actinide compounds, displays very anomalous behavior in the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, ρ(T). In UNiSn this unusual ρ(T) dependence has been attributed to half-metallic behavior with a semiconducting gap in the minority spin band and metallic behavior in the majority spin band with a ferromagnetic transition in the vicinity of 50 K. We have studied UNiSn using 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy and observed that annealing procedures influence the microscopic properties of the sample in a profound way. As-cast samples are nonmagnetic. Annealing in the neighbor of 800 °C results in the formation of a magnetic component. The conversion to a magnetic phase is incomplete even after annealing for 210 days at 800 °C. The magnetic component goes through two transformations: (1) a region below approximately 60 K where there is a coexistence and gradual transformation of paramagnetic to magnetically ordered material and (2) a region below 43 K where the magnetic component is completely ordered. In the region between 43 and 60 K, the hyperfine field shows a sequence of first-order transitions. The temperature dependence of the 119Sn hyperfine field for UNiSn is presented and discussed along with measurements of the temperature dependence of the specific heat, electrical resistivity, and the temperature and field dependence of the magnetization.

Notes: USn3 is a highly enhanced paramagnet that is very near a magnetic instability, and UPb3 has an antiferromagnetic transition at 31.3 K. As Sn is substituted for Pb in U(Sn1−xPbx)3, the Néel temperature, TN, initially increases to 38 K at x=0.7, then decreases, and appears to go to zero for x(approximately-less-than)0.1. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility for 0≤x≤1.0 and 119Sn Mössbauer spectra for 0≤x≤0.98 have been measured. The Mössbauer spectra indicate that the antiferromagnetic structure for the Pb-rich pseudobinary alloys is not type I as previously reported. As x decreases, at least two, and possibly four, distinct Sn hyperfine field sites are found. The saturation hyperfine fields at the Sn sites do not show as pronounced a variation with concentration as is seen in TN. For larger x the saturation hyperfine fields are independent of x, which suggests that the U magnetic moments are nearly constant for the Pb-rich pseudobinary alloys, and then drop rapidly to zero at the magnetic instability. The fraction of Sn sites seeing a particular hyperfine field is observed to vary monotonically across the series.

Notes: A patient with a twin pregnancy required a Caesarean section for severe pre-eclampsia. Her platelet count was 71 × 109.l−1. Epidural anaesthesia was performed after platelet transfusion. A spinal epidural haematoma was diagnosed postoperatively. A generalised tonic–clonic seizure sparing the lower limbs enabled early diagnosis to be made. The patient recovered with no permanent neurological damage after laminectomy and clot removal. The risks and benefits of regional techniques require careful consideration, and postoperative monitoring for recovery of neural blockade is essential.
