Notes: A TGA assisted hydrothermal process was employed to prepare chalcogenide nanorods. The different morphology of CdS nanomaterials prepared with and without the TGA assisted hydrothermal process indicates that TGA plays a critical role in controlling the nucleation and growth of CdS nanomaterials. The paper makes a preliminary presentation of the mechanisms of preparation of chalcogenide nanostructures with and without the use of the TGA assisted hydrothermal synthesis. FeS nanorods and nanoparticles have been prepared by the TGA assisted and without the TGA assisted hydrothermal process, respectively, which confirmed the proposed mechanism. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the nanorods are of orthorhombic structure, and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern showed that the FeS nanorods were single crystalse. Further investigation for the synthesis of other chalcogenides will be undertaken in orderto confirm the proposed mechanism

Notes: Abstract  Nanjing is currently one of the fastest developing regions in terms of construction and economy in China. Heavy metal pollution is becoming more serious with the expansion of production and life scales. Four environmental units (highway, refinery, rubbish dumps associated with human daily life, and shoal of the Yangtse River) were selected from the region according to the geneses of the pollution to study and evaluate the distribution and mechanism of the contamination, the speciations of the polluting elements, and the geneses of the pollution in the soils and sediments. The purposes of the study are to understand generally the current situation and the cause of the pollution, and to provide a scientific basis to prevent and solve the pollution problem. At the same time, it would be helpful to probe the effective way of studying heavy metal pollution resulting from the development of modern cities and to accumulate data. It is indicated by the study that the heavy metals contained in the soil of the environmental unit of the highway are Pb, Co and Cr; in the soil of the refinery Cr, V, Pb, Ni, and Co; in the soil of the rubbish plot Co, Cu, and Sb; in the sediments of the shoal Pb, Co, Cu, and Ni. Fe-Mn oxide is given the first place to the speciations in polluting heavy metals transmitted by air. Carbonate is more in speciations of polluting heavy metals transmitted by water than in speciations of the metals transmitted by air. In the ten elements studied, Pb is most directly poisonous to the plants in the region; Co and Cu are the next, and Ni is the least. Heavy metal pollution has been occurring in the soils and sediments of the region and the situation will worsen if some effective measures are not taken.

Notes: Abstract. To support emerging real-time applications, high-speed integrated services networks must provide end-to-end performance guarantees on a per-connection basis in a networking environment. Resource management algorithms must accommodate traffic that may get burstier as it traverses the network due to complex interactions among packet streams at each switch. To address this problem, several non-work-conserving packet-service disciplines have been proposed. Non-work-conserving servers may be idle and hold packets under certain conditions, to reconstruct, fully or partially, the traffic pattern of the original source inside the network and prevent the traffic from becoming burstier. We compare two non-work-conserving service disciplines. Stop-and-go uses a multilevel framing strategy to allocate resources in a single switch and to ensure traffic smoothness throughout the network. Rate controlled static priority (RCSP) decouples the server functions with two components: (1) a regulator to control traffic distortion introduced by multiplexing effects and load fluctuations in previous servers, and 2) a static priority scheduler to multiplex the regulated traffic. We compare the two service disciplines in terms of traffic specification, scheduling mechanism, buffer space requirement, end-to-end delay characteristics, connection admission-control algorithms, and achievable network utilization. The comparison is first done analytically, and then empirically by using two 10-min traces of MPEG compressed video.

Notes: Abstract. Previous approaches to supporting video on packet-switched networks include deterministic service, statistical service, predicted service, and feedback-based schemes. These schemes represent different tradeoffs in quality of service (QOS), achievable network utilization, and method of dealing with overload. In this paper, we propose a new service called REnegotiated Deterministic Variable Bit Rate Service (RED-VBR) that attempts to strike an efficient balance with the above tradeoffs. The approach is based on deterministic guarantees with client-controlled renegotiation of traffic and QOS parameters and graceful adaptation during overload periods. We introduce a connection admission control algorithm for RED-VBR which bounds the renegotiation failure probability. We evaluate the scheme using two traces of MPEG-compressed video and show that, even with simple renegotiation polices and relatively low renegotiation frequencies, high network utilization in the range of 50–80% can be achieved. For traffic that is bursty over long intervals, this represents a 100–150% improvement in network utilization compared to deterministic service. Compared to statistical and predicted service, our approach allows more graceful and client-controlled QOS degradation during overload periods.

Notes: Abstract Most of the solutions proposed to support real-time (i.e., guaranteed performance) communication services in packet-switching networks adopt a connection-oriented and reservation-oriented approach. In such an approach, resource allocation and route-selection decisions are made before the start of the communication on the basis of resource availability and real-time network load at that time, and are usually kept for the duration of the communication. This ratherstatic resource-management approach has certain limitations. It does not take into account (a) the dynamics of the communicating clients; (b) the dynamics of the network state; and (c) the tradeoff between quality of service and network availability, thus affecting theavailability andflexibility of the real-time network services. Availability is the ability of the network to accommodate as many real-time clients as possible, while flexibility is the ability to adapt the real-time services to the changing state of the network and the client demands. In this paper, we present the dynamic connection management (DCM) scheme, which addresses these issues by providing the network with the capability of dynamically modifying the performance parameters and the routes of any existing real-time connection. With this capability, DCM can be used to increase the availability and flexibility of the guaranteed-performance service offered to the clients.

Notes: Magnetic material CoFe2O4 was prepared via layered precursor method. Magneticnanosized photocatalyst TiO2/SiO2/CoFe2O4 was synthesized by hydrolysis titanium bis- ammoniumlactato dihydroxide into photoactive TiO2 onto silica-modified CoFe2O4. Based on XRD, FT-IR,VSM analysis and catalytic evaluation, as-synthesized magnetic photocatalyst possess core-shellstructure and exhibits evident photodegradation activity for methyl orange

Notes: In this paper the Li+, Sb3+-doped SiO2-TiO2 thin films, which were heat-treated with an appliedelectric field, were prepared by sol-gel dip coating. The crystallization of the thin films in the electric fieldheating-treatment was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Thephoto-catalytic activity of SiO2-TiO2 films was studied under the condition of an electric fieldheating-treatment and mixing with some additive such as Li+ and Sb3+. Finally, studies on photo-catalyticdegradation showed that the Li+, Sb3+-doped SiO2-TiO2 films on the quartz glass, of high photo-catalyticactivity, were successfully obtained in the electric field heating-treatment

Notes: As machining technology develops toward the unmanned and automated system, theneed for chip-breaking control is considered increasingly important. In this paper, chip-breakinglimit of 3-D complicated groove insert is proposed according to cutting experiments. Themathematical formulation of chip section profile coefficient is established through the analysis ofinfluential effect of 3-D complicated groove on chip section profile. The chip-breaking model isdeveloped to predict the critical feed rate and the critical depth of cut in machining based onanalyzing the restricted effect of 3-D complicated groove on chips. Finally, a full experimentalvalidation of the analytical model is presented for chip breaking when the workpiece is steel, 45.The testing results show the critical feed rate model and critical depth of cut model are reasonableand reliable
