Notes: ISO 14000 has been developed as a new international standard series for promoting environmental protection and sustainable development. Since the introduction of ISO 14001 in September 1996 it has attracted great attention from organizations in various industries. ISO 14001 specifies the requirements and procedures for establishing an environmental management system. An increasing number of organizations from various industrial sectors have actively participated in implementing this new standard. However, very few construction companies - for example, in Australia - have actively pursued certification to this standard despite having an obligation to implement it, as the services and products they produce directly impact the environment. By reviewing the strategic issues posed by the entire family of ISO 14000 standards, this paper analyses its relevance to construction and the difficulties and problems that may be encountered in their implementation. A framework for implementing the standard in construction companies is proposed. It is suggested that the adoption of ISO 14000 by construction companies may enable them to improve their environmental performance as well as the built environment, which in turn will contribute to sustainable development.

Notes: A unique pilot low-pressure spray forming plant was established and its sprayatomisation and deposition process developed to study the new processing methods for high performance materials and to develop spray forming technology suitable for making sound superalloy preforms. The results indicated that high density (〉99%) preforms (billets and rings) with little gas pick-ups and with the microstructural features of rapidly solidified superalloys, i.e. refined equiaxed grains and uniform microstructure, could be achieved after the optimisation of the spray atomisation and deposition process. The effects of subsequent thermal processing on the density, microstructure and mechanical properties of the spray formed superalloy were investigated. Compared to the turbine disks and rings made by wrought superalloys, the spray formed superalloys with identical chemistry showed significantly improved metallurgical quality, higher mechanical properties, and better hot workability

Notes: An ultra-high strength Al-11Zn-2.9Mg-1.7Cu alloy has been prepared by spray forming process. The microstructures of as-cast and as-deposited alloys have been studied. XRD analysis result shows that the phases of spray formed Al-11Zn-2.9Mg-1.7Cu alloy consist of a-Al, MgZn2, Al2Cu and Al2CuMg. T6 heat treatment process is used to strengthen the alloy. The ultimate tensile strength reach up to 810MPa, and the elongation is about 9~11%. This kind of aluminum alloy is an ideal structural material for the aerospace and automobile industries

Notes: Abstract Spectrophotometric titrations performed in anhydrous acetonitrile at 25°C give the complex stability constants (log Ks) and the Gibbs free energy changes (-ΔG° for the stoichiometric 1 : 1 intramolecular sandwich complexation of light lanthanoid (III) nitrates (La ∼ Gd) with the polymethylene-bridged bis(benzo-12-crown-4)s 1, the corresponding dioxo derivative 2 and its dihydroxy analogue 3. The complex stability sequence as a function of reciprocal ionic radius of lanthanoids showed similar profiles in stability constants (log Ks) and maximum stabilities were obtained at Eu3+ for the complexation of light lanthanoids with the three bis(benzo-12-crown-4)s 1–3. The cation binding abilities and relative selectivities for the trivalent lanthanoid ions of these structurally related bis(benzo-12-crown-4)s 1–3 are discussed according to the derivatization of the bridging.

Notes: Summary A new binuclear NiII complex, [{(TPA)Ni(μ-Cl)}2]-(ClO4)2·H2O (1), where TPA = tris(2-pyridyl-methyl) amine, has been prepared and characterized. The X-ray crystal structure and variable temperature magnetic susceptibility (4–300 K) of the complex have been determined. The two NiII atoms of (1) are in a distorted octahedral environment and are bridged by Cl atoms. Ni-Cl distances are 2.363(6) and 2.503(7) Å, and the Ni-Cl-Ni angle is 92.7(2)°. The metal atoms are separated by a non-bonding distance of 3.523 Å. The effective magnetic moment of (1) increases slightly with decreasing temperature and appears to reach a maximum before decreasing. The observed data were fitted to the Heisenberg model and the results indicate that there is a ferromagnetic interaction (positive J) and weak antiferromagnetic intermolecular interaction (negative θ).

Notes: Abstract Two new macrocyclic dioxotetraamine ligands, 1-(2-methylthiophene)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-5,7-dione (H2L1) and 1,11-bis(2-methylthiophene)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-5,7-dione (H2L2), have been synthesized and characterized. The resulting dioxocyclams readily coordinate to CuII. The CuII complex of H2L2 has been isolated as a single crystal and the structure determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The copper atom is in a square-planar environment with four basal nitrogen atoms. The solution behaviour of the CuII complexes, CuL1 and CuL2, has been further studied by e.s.r., u.v.–vis. and cyclic voltammetric techniques. A remarkable redshift has been observed for the maximum absorption band in the electronic spectra of CuL1 or CuL2 compared with that of the unsubstituted copper species (CuL). Electrochemical studies suggest that the introduction of thiophene pendant(s) to the macrocycle destabilizes the CuIII ion compared with the unsubstituted dioxocyclam, and the reason for this is discussed.

Notes: The kinetics of Zn(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) incorporation into meso tetrameta-tolueneporphyri n (H2T(m-CH3)PP) in acetone have been studied by means of stopped-flow method. A unified reaction mechanism was proposed and the kinetic parameters were obtained by nonlinear least-square methods. The effect of ionic strength (I) on Cd(II)/H2T(m-CH3)PP was investigated. It has been found that there is a negative kinetic salt effect and the relationship of rate constants with ionic strength was obtained. Some solvent effects have also been investigated in this article. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Int J Chem Kinet 30: 277-283, 1998.
