Notes: Crucumin (diferuloylmethane) is a major active component of turmeric, but itsbioavailability of oral administration is very low. In order to improve its pharmaceuticalefficiency in oral use, poly (d,l-lactide) (PDLLA) nanospheres containing curcumin aresuccessfully fabricated using a modified spontaneous emulsification solvent diffusion (SESD)method. The morphology, size and distribution of the resulting nanospheres are characterizedby TEM and laser light scattering method. Drug contents in the nanospheres are calculatedthrough UV spectrophotometer method. As a result, regular spherical PDLLA nanospherescontaining curcumin are obtained and their effective diameters are 289 nm with narrowdistribution (Pd=0.118)

Notes: Abstract  Sinkhole collapse is one of the main limitations on the development of karst areas, especially where bedrock is covered by unconsolidated material. Studies of sinkhole formation have shown that sinkholes are likely to develop in cutter (enlarged joint) zones as a result of subterranean erosion by flowing groundwater. Because of the irregular distribution of pinnacles and cutters on the bedrock surface, uncertainties arise when "hit-or-miss" borehole drilling is used to locate potential collapse sites. A high-resolution geophysical technique capable of depicting the details of the bedrock surface is essential for guiding the drilling program. Dipole-dipole electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) was used to map the bedrock surface at a site in southern Indiana where limestone is covered by about 9 m of clayey soils. Forty-nine transects were conducted over an area of approximately 42,037 m2. The electrode spacing was 3 m. The length of the transects varied from 81 to 249 m. The tomographs were interpreted with the aid of soil borings. The repeatability of ERT was evaluated by comparing the rock surface elevations interpreted from pairs of transects where they crossed each other. The average difference was 2.4 m, with a maximum of 10 m. The discrepancy between interpreted bedrock-surface elevations for a transect intersection may be caused by variations in the subsurface geology normal to the transect. Averaging the elevation data interpreted from different transects improved the ERT results. A bedrock surface map was generated using only the averaged elevation data at the transect junctions. The accuracy of the map was further evaluated using data from four exploratory boreholes. The average difference between interpreted and actual bedrock surface-elevations was less than 0.4 m. The map shows two large troughs in the limestone surface: one coinciding with an existing sinkhole basin, while the other is in alignment with a small topographic valley. Because sinkholes were observed at the same elevation interval in similar valleys in the vicinity, the delineated trough may have implications for future land use at the site.

Notes: Abstract Activation of Ca2+ and cAMP-dependent Cl− conductances by extracellular ATP was studied using the whole-cell patch clamp technique. Immediately after addition of extracellular ATP (10 μm), activation of wholecell Cl− current exhibiting delayed inactivation and activation kinetics at hyperpolarizing and depolarizing voltages, respectively, was observed. After prolonged activation, the kinetic characteristics of the ATP-induced Cl− current became time- and voltage-independent. When applied to the later phase of the ATP-activated whole-cell current, the disulfonic acid stilbene DIDS (200 μm) could only inhibit 64% of the current while diphenylamine-dicarboxylic acid (DPC, 1 mm) completely inhibited it. Inclusion of a peptide inhibitor for protein kinase A (PKI, 10 nm) in the pipette solution blocked ATP-induced time- and voltage-independent current activation but did not affect the delayed activating and inactivating current activation but did not affect the delayed activating and inactivating current which could be totally blocked by DIDS. Anion selectivity sequence was determined in the presence of either PKI or DIDS and found to be significantly different. Increased pipette EGTA (10 mm) or treatment of the cells with trifluoperazine (40 μm), an inhibitor of calmodulin, suppressed both types of ATP-induced Cl− currents. No current activation by ATP was observed when cells were dialyzed with the IP3 receptor blocker, heparin (10 ng/ml). These results suggest that extracellular ATP activates IP3-linked Ca2+-dependent regulatory pathway, which in turn activates cAMP-dependent pathway, leading to activation of both Ca2+ and cAMP-dependent Cl− conductances in epididymal cells.

Notes: Abstract  An open incubation technique was used to measure S mineralization in a range of upland soils of north China. Six mineralization patterns were examined, and a soil S-exhaustion experiment with ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) was conducted to investigate the availability of various organic S pools to plants. For all of the 12 soils tested, the release of S as SO4 2– was curvilinear with time, and during a 28-week incubation at 30  °C the amount of S mineralized ranged from 14.0 mg S kg–1 soil to 37.4 mg S kg–1 soil. A first-order model and Gompertz model appeared to best describe S mineralization. Examination of the soils after incubation revealed the bulk of the mineralized S was mainly derived from the C-bonded S pool, while the majority of mineralized S under soil S exhaustion by ryegrass was derived from the HI-reducible S pool.

Notes: Abstract p-Type polycrystalline diamond films were prepared by hot-filament CVD method using a liquid cyclic organic borinate ester as the doping source. The obtained films were identified as diamond films by means of SEM and Raman spectroscopy. The resistivity of the doped films can be adjusted by changing the temperature of the boron source.

Notes: Abstract  Rapid eye movements (REMs) are a defining characteristic of REM sleep during which vivid dreams occur. It has been suggested that REMs may be binocularly coordinated and related to “watching” dream images. For the first time, binocular eye movements were recorded during natural REM sleep in monkeys to test the conjugate nature of the oculomotor system and the “scanning hypothesis” of REMs during sleep . During REM sleep, the lines of sight of the two eyes are frequently misaligned up to 30° horizontally and/or vertically. Since the lines of sight usually don′t intersect, there is no fixation point. Instead, each eye is aimed at a different part of the visual field during REM sleep. Furthermore, REMs are not usually conjugate, but are disjunctive or even monocular in horizontal or vertical directions. These data argue against the idea that REMs actually “track” dream images, unless each eye is watching its own dream! Binocular misalignment and disjunctive (even monocular) REMs during sleep suggest that separate left eye and right eye pathways generate saccades in each eye and control the position of each eye. Binocular coordination cannot be the passive result of anatomical connectivity as has been argued previously, but instead must result from a high-level process associated with the awake state that coordinates activity in left-eye and right-eye pathways. Hering′s law of equal innervation is not consistent with these data.

Notes: Nano-sized β-tricalcium phosphate (nano-sized β-TCP) was synthesized by dialysisprocess using Ca(NO3)2·4H2O and (NH4)2HPO4 as starting materials. The time needed for the wholeprocess is much shorter than other reported methods. In this new synthesis, dialysis was used toremove the unwanted ions, and the removal efficiency of impurity ion was evaluated by comparingthe representative ion NH4+ between the original slurries and deionized water outside of the dialysistube. The resulting powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transforminfrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and chemical analysis. Results showed the final products are pureβ-TCP. The pictures of high resolution-transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) furtherindicated that β-TCP crystals are around 100nm in diameter

Notes: In our previous work the nano-sized hydroxyapatite (nano-HAP) with uniformmorphology has been firstly synthesized by a wet chemical method based on dialysis, but thedialysis efficiency was not investigated in detail. In this paper, the removal efficiency of impurityions such as NH4+ and NO3- was respectively evaluated by calculating the concentration of therepresentative irons between the inner slurry and outer distilled water. Results showed that 99%NO3- ions and 96.9% NH4+ - ions in the slurry has been eliminated. In the first dialysis time, theNH4+ ions diffuse faster than the NO3- ions due to their smaller size. In the following dialysis times, the dialysis efficiency of NO3- ions is higher than that of the NH4+ ions because of the presence ofhigher NO3- ions concentration gradient. The final nano-HAP is also characterized by XRD, TEM,and FT-IR. It is revealed that the products are stick-like with a length of about 150nm and adiameter of about 20-50 nm. Current work suggests that dialysis is an efficient purified method fornano-HAP production and especially can be applied to industrial preparation of fine nano-sizedHAP powders

Notes: Nano-sized zinc-substituted hydroxyapatite (nano-ZnHA) has stimulatory effect on boneformation and inhibitory effect on osteoclastic bone resorption in vivo. Nano-ZnHA with serial zinc fractions(0, 2, 5, 10 mol%) were synthesized by an improved precipitation method based on dialysis process.Transmission electron microscopy observation indicated that the increase of Zn fraction led tosmaller crystallite. X-ray diffraction of the products revealed that some typical characteristic peaksof HA displayed when the Zn fraction was below 10%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopyshowed that the bending peaks of the group-OH in HA became wider with the increase of Znfraction and it disappeared at 10 mol%. The current work demonstrated that zinc could substitute forcalcium into hydroxyapatite in the limited range of composition by using dialysis process
