Conclusions 1. We have shown that it is possible to investigate the initial stage of thermal-fatigue failure of cast iron by studying its elastic and relaxation properties. 2. We discovered that the continuity of the material is disrupted (the first visible cracks appear) when the modulus of elasticity has decreased by a factor of 25–30%, while the actual failure process (formation of macrocracks) is accompanied by a severe drop in the modulus of elasticity and the internal-friction background. 3. It was established that cast iron with a ferrite matrix subjected to cyclic thermal loading exhibits both a dislocation maximum at t = 350 °C and a peak at t = 425 °C whose nature is still unclear.
