    Notes: The bubble formation process at small, single, circular orifices at low gas flow rates is modified when the system is vertically vibrated in a sinusoidal fashion.For systems with significant gas chamber volume, bubble volume in the vibrated case is smaller than in the nonvibrated case. The vibrations increase the amount of liquid weeping through the orifice into the gas chamber. A simple inviscid model adequately predicts bubble formation in the medium-chamber-volume region at low values of amplitude and frequency of vibration and low viscosities. The boundaries of the transition from the FR ≫ 1 to the FR = 1 regions are described in terms of “the acceleration number/Eötvös number”.

    Notes: The gravity-driven coalescence of 1- to 2-cm. diameter air bubbles in glycerine and in water has been studied by high-speed cinematography. The resulting coalescence behavior can be correlated by a simple model which assumes that each bubble trails a wake, and that the bubble coalescing from below accelerates when it enters the wake of the preceding bubble and thus overtakes the first bubble. The predictions of the model are not significantly altered by different assumed wake configurations.

    Notes: Bubble driven fluid circulations are present in bubble columns, gas lifts, pool boiling, etc. Their mechanism is shown to be quite similar to the mechanism of natural covection but with much larger driving forces. These circulations are stable in many baffled systems but unstable and rapidly changing in size, shape, and orientation in unbaffled systems. The effect of these circulations in bubble columns is to lower holdup and vapor residence time, thus decreasing the mass transfer efficiency of the column.

    Notes: The constant-volume heat capacities of gaseous perfluorocyclobutane and propylene have been measured over a considerable range of temperatures and densities with a new type of adiabatic calorimeter. This calorimeter differs from previous constant-volume gas calorimeters in having very thin walls and being equipped with an internal motor stirrer to provide temperature uniformity. The experimental results have been compared with the predictions of the Benedict-Webb-Rubin and Martin-Hou equations, by use of published values of the zero-pressure-constant-volume heat capacity. The over-all agreement is satisfactory, with a maximum difference between the experimental and calculated heat capacities of 6.7%; however the comparison reveals several interesting systematic differences between the experimental and calculated values of the derivatives of the constant-volume heat capacity with respect to temperature and density.
