    Notes: We report on the design and testing of a new readout scheme for superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) arrays. By grouping the electrodes in rows and columns, this method drastically reduces the number of connections and electronic circuits required for reading out a large format array of pixelated detectors. Using charge sensitive amplifiers with junction field-effect transistors we verify that the energy resolution degrades primarily due to capacitance increase at the amplifier's input node. However, since each detector is readout by two independent circuits, these two outputs can be combined to increase the signal-to-noise level. For a N×N array, we show that the equivalent noise charge at the input worsens by a factor much less than N as compared to single device readout. We also report on a proof-of-principle experiment carried out on a two-by-two array of STJs using optical photon excitation. These measurements show that stable biasing of STJs is possible in this configuration and that the line resolutions are consistent with our theoretical predictions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: α-Synuclein is a neuronally expressed protein which is mutated in familial Parkinson's disease. We have previously shown that disease-associated mutants of α-synuclein cause enhanced neuronal cell death in response to a variety of stimuli, whereas wild-type α-synuclein has a protective effect against some stimuli, whilst enhancing the death response to others. We demonstrate, for the first time, that over-expression of the heat shock protein HSP27 has a potent protective anti-apoptotic effect against the damaging effects of wild-type and particularly of mutant α-synuclein. In contrast, HSP70 has some protective effect against the damaging effect of the wild-type protein, but has no effect against the mutant proteins, whilst HSP56 has no protective effect in this system. Our results indicate that disease-associated mutants of α-synuclein enhance its death-inducing properties and lead to increased apoptosis, which can be mitigated by either the use of specific caspase inhibitors or HSP27 over-expression. This potent protective effect of HSP27 against the mutant and wild-type proteins may be of potential therapeutic importance.

    Notes: LOWE, M.D., et al .: Catheter Cryoablation of Supraventricular Arrhythmias: A Painless Alternative to Radiofrequency Energy. Cryothermy has potential advantages over RF energy for catheter ablation, including reversibility of lesion formation, catheter stability, and less procedural discomfort. Cryoablation procedures were performed in 14 patients with atrioventricular reentrant tachycardias (AVNRTs), 13 patients with accessory pathway (AP)-mediated tachycardias, and 5 patients with atrial fibrillation. The numbers of energy applications, pain scores, procedural times, and outcomes were recorded and compared with age- and sex-matched patients undergoing similar RF procedures. Cryoablation was successful in 26 of 32 patients (11/14 AVNRT, 10/13 AP, 5/5 AF) compared with 30 of 32 undergoing RF procedures, with similar numbers of energy applications and procedural times. Cryothermy was painless in all patients, and the overall procedural discomfort was significantly less than in patients treated with RF (1.3 ± 2.2 vs 6.1 ± 3.5) . In patients with anteroseptal pathways, cryomapping successfully identified safe sites to target the delivery of energy. Cryothermy is a painless and safe alternative to RF. It may be particularly useful for catheter ablation of patients with pathways close to the atrioventricular node. (PACE 2003; 26[Pt. II]:500–503)

    Notes: Benchmark dose (BMD) analysis was used to estimate an inhalation benchmark concentration for styrene neurotoxicity. Quantal data on neuropsychologic test results from styrene-exposed workers [Mutti et al. (1984). American Journal of Industrial Medicine, 5, 275–286] were used to quantify neurotoxicity, defined as the percent of tested workers who responded abnormally to ≥1, ≥2, or ≥3 out of a battery of eight tests. Exposure was based on previously published results on mean urinary mandelic- and phenylglyoxylic acid levels in the workers, converted to air styrene levels (15, 44, 74, or 115 ppm). Nonstyrene-exposed workers from the same region served as a control group. Maximum-likelihood estimates (MLEs) and BMDs at 5 and 10% response levels of the exposed population were obtained from lognormal analysis of the quantal data. The highest MLE was 9 ppm (BMD = 4 ppm) styrene and represents abnormal responses to ≥3 tests by 10% of the exposed population. The most health-protective MLE was 2 ppm styrene (BMD = 0.3 ppm) and represents abnormal responses to ≥1 test by 5% of the exposed population. A no observed adverse effect level/lowest observed adverse effect level (NOAEL/LOAEL) analysis of the same quantal data showed workers in all styrene exposure groups responded abnormally to ≥1, ≥2, or ≥3 tests, compared to controls, and the LOAEL was 15 ppm. A comparison of the BMD and NOAEL/LOAEL analyses suggests that at air styrene levels below the LOAEL, a segment of the worker population may be adversely affected. The benchmark approach will be useful for styrene noncancer risk assessment purposes by providing a more accurate estimate of potential risk that should, in turn, help to reduce the uncertainty that is a common problem in setting exposure levels.

    Notes: Development of predictive models of occlusal loading of the facial skeleton will be of value for prosthetic design in oral rehabilitation. A 3-D finite element (FE) model of a human skull, based on CT scans, was constructed to analyse strain and stress distribution in the facial skeleton caused by simulated occlusal loading. Vertical loads were applied simulating loading of the full maxillary arch and unilateral single point occlusal loading of maxillary molar, pre-molar, canine and incisor sites. Strain and stress regimes from Von Mises (VM) failure criteria and extension and compression diagrams showed even distribution of strain following loading of the full maxillary arch throughout the facial elements. For individual points, the highest VM concentrations were consistently located on the facial aspect several mm above the loading site. Strain trajectories divided into a ‘V-shaped’ pattern, from the loading point into medial and lateral branches with higher VM values in the medial. As the same load was applied from the posterior to anterior region, VM values increased on all facial areas. Strain patterns were less symmetric and there was an increase in strain in the alveolar arch and around the rim of the nasal cavity. The overall picture of the facial skeleton is of a vertical plate enabling it to withstand occlusal stresses by in-plane loading and bending in its own plane. The most efficient distribution of load was on maxillary full arch loading with the most unfavourable strain concentrations occurring on loading in the anterior region.

    Notes: Background  Increasingly, deaf students are educated in mainstream school environments. This poses a question of how deaf children negotiate the demands of forming friendships with their hearing peers. The present study was designed to examine coping strategies of 35 deaf children attending full or partial mainstream school settings.Method  Using a qualitative analysis design, a range of coping strategies used by the children was described based on parents’ reports. The relative success of these coping strategies in establishing relationships with hearing peers was assessed by examining strategies that increased the social success of deaf girls and boys.Results  The results showed differences by gender in the effectiveness of coping strategies used by the participants. Deaf girls who were confident and frequently asked for clarifications or who were comfortable playing alone tended to achieve good relationships with hearing peers. In contrast, deaf boys’ relationships with hearing peers benefited mostly from the boys’ ability to perform well in sports.Conclusions  These findings are discussed in light of existing research on coping and current debates on the benefits of mainstreaming for deaf children.

    Notes: Increasing attention is being paid to children's rights issues in policy and law. However, there is little recent research examining adults’ attitudes toward children's rights. This is an important question given that children's rights are unlikely to be fulfilled if they are not supported by the adults involved in their lives. Attitudes toward nurturance and self-determination rights were examined in 461 undergraduate students from the United States and Canada. Students were asked to think of a “target child” (8, 10, 12, 14, or 16 years) when answering the questions. Students strongly endorsed nurturance rights, but were generally unsupportive of children's rights to self-determination. Canadians showed greater support for self-determination than did Americans. In both groups, endorsement increased significantly with the age of the target child. Commenting on factors they considered when responding to the items, participants perceived children's rights as dependent on personal, interpersonal, and societal factors.

    Notes: Based on the dynamics of capillary flow in partially saturated-porous media, a finite element model is developed to predict the infiltration of water into porous biomaterials, taking into account anisotropy effects. The model is formulated on the physically-based constitutive relationships of water activity and conductivity. These constitutive properties depend on temperature, moisture, and microstructure. This is in contrast to the constant transfer properties used in previous models developed for food materials. Rehydration of black leaf tea Assam has been simulated. The prediction agreed well with the experimental data of NMR measurements. The hydration rate from cut-edges is 45 to 200 times faster than that from top to bottom surfaces.

    Notes: Abstract  The effects of cyclosporin A (CyA, 50 mg/kg body weight) or its commercial vehicle (cremophor) on the acid-base regulation of uninephrectomized rats were assessed for 7 days and in non-nephrectomized rats for 15 days. CyA induced a marked systemic acidosis, accompanied by decreases in blood PCO2 and plasma bicarbonate. Untreated uninephrectomized rats did not show the acidosis. In CyA-treated rats the urine pH decreased (control 6.65±0.06 vs. CyA 6.18±0.08; P〈0.01) as well as urinary bicarbonate (non-nephrectomized rats 7.50±1.88 mM vs. uninephrectomy plus CyA 0.75± 0.06 mM; P〈0.01), suggesting partial renal compensation of systemic acidosis. Titratable acidity increased in CyA-treated rats (control 21.6±1.2 vs. CyA 63.3±12.0 µEq/l; P〈0.001). Phosphate, glucose, and osmolar clearances were not significantly altered in non-nephrectomized rats treated with CyA for 15 days. There was a striking decrease in body weight in CyA-treated rats (control 274.0±3.8 vs. CyA 225.0±5.1 g; P〈0.01), but compensatory growth of the remaining kidney was not prevented by this drug or by its vehicle. In summary, CyA induced a severe metabolic acidosis in uninephrectomized rats that was not compensated by the remaining kidney, in spite of the well-preserved compensatory weight gain of this organ. Loss of body weight was significant in CyA-treated animals.
