Notizen: A new type of optical bistable device is demonstrated. We report the first observation of optical bistable switching caused by charge-induced self-feedback due to field screening in GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well structures, both at room temperature and at low temperature (110 K). A bias voltage supply is directly connected to the p-i-n diode with the multiple quantum well structure to attain optical bistability. Since no external series resistance is required, the device is attractive from the standpoint of a practical application. The mechanism for the self-feedback underlying the operation of the device is elaborated. The theoretical consideration about the resolvable spot size on the device operation is shown.

Notizen: Summary An immunohistological study of Alzheimer's brains was performed using antibodies to C-series gangliosides and microtubule-associated protein 5 (MAP5), and their staining patterns were compared with those of antibodies to tau and β-amyloid precursor protein. Antibodies to C-series gangliosides and MAP5, both of which are known to preferentially expressed in the fetal brains, immunostained dystrophic neurites of senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and neuropil threads abundant in 3rd and 5th layers in the cerebral cortex, all of which are considered to be pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. The immunostaining patterns of these structures by antibodies to C-series gangliosides and MAP5 were similar to those by the antibody to tau. These three antibodies also immunostained some neurons in Alzheimer's brain, although their staining patterns were slightly different from one another; i.e., both diffuse and granular patterns were seen by the antibody to tau, but only granular pattern by the antibodies to C-series gangliosides and MAP5. These neurons immunostained by these three types of antibodies appeared to be the precursors of the classical neurofibrillary tangles, as positively stained neurons were not seen in the brains of non-demented cases. The presence of fetal antigens such as the C-series gangliosides and MAP5 in Alzheimer's brain may suggest that regeneration or sprouting of neurons is ongoing in association with the re-induction of gene expression characteristic for the brain in the early stage of development.

    Thema: Medizin
Notizen: Summary Stromelysin levels were measured using a one-step sandwich immunoassay in synovial fluid (SF) obtained from 31 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (31 samples) and 13 patients with osteoarthritis (OA) (13 samples) and in serum from 81 patients with RA (106 samples), 12 with OA (14 samples), 12 with gouty arthritis (gout) (14 samples), and 8 with osteoporosis (OP) (14 samples) to identify differences in the levels in these diseases as well as correlations with clinical parameters in RA. SF stromelysin levels were significantly higher in RA than in OA, and rose with increasing joint destruction in the former. No significant correlations were found between the SF stromelysin level in RA and various clinical parameters, except for the volume of SF which showed a correlation. Serum levels of stromelysin were highest in RA, gout, OA, and osteoporosis in decreasing order, and in RA were correlated with the Steinbrocker Stage. A significant correlation was also found between the serum stromelysin level and number of swollen joints, and correlations with the Lansbury index, ESR, CRP, WBC and Plt. The stromelysin level in SF was thought to be a useful parameter of local joint involvement and that in serum of the severity of systemic joint inflammation.
