    Notes: The spectra of van der Waals trimers formed from two atoms and a diatomic molecule are investigated. A computational method for calculating vibrational energies, rotational constants and angular expectation values for such complexes is developed and applied to the Ar2–HCl complex. All five low-frequency modes of the trimer are included. The pair potentials for Ar–Ar and Ar–HCl interactions are well known, and calculations are performed on Ar2–HCl potentials obtained from them assuming pairwise additivity. The calculations are compared with experimental results obtained from microwave and far-infrared spectroscopy. Substantial discrepancies between experiment and theory are found, and are attributed to the effects of nonadditive interactions. Several different contributions to the nonadditive interactions are investigated: dispersion forces, electrostatic induction forces, and exchange overlap forces are all found to be significant, but not large enough to explain the discrepancies. Exchange multipole forces, arising from the interaction between overlap-induced multipoles on the Ar atoms and the permanent multipoles on the HCl molecule, are found to be important, and to improve the agreement between experiment and theory substantially. It seems likely that it will be possible to obtain detailed information on nonadditive interactions from the spectroscopy of van der Waals trimers.

    Notes: Several different methods for calculating the energy levels of van der Waals trimers are compared for the case of Ar3. These include solution of the coupled equations in a basis set of hyperspherical harmonics and various three-dimensional basis set expansions. It is found that a basis set expansion in Jacobi coordinates gives results that are adequate for calculating the energy levels of the lowest few vibrational states, and that this method is computationally cheap enough to be extended to handle atom–atom–diatom complexes. The transition dipole moments for the lowest allowed transitions of Ar3 are estimated, and found to be about 7×10−5 D. The effects of three-body forces on the energy levels are investigated, and found to be large enough to determine from high-resolution spectroscopic experiments.

    Notes: Thin Y-Ba-CU-O films were prepared in-situ by low-temperature codeposition on Al2O3 substrates. The temperatures during preparation did not exceed 600 °C. As a source of Ba the BaF2 was used. The zero resistance Tc values were higher than 84 K, Jc =4×104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K/OT. The Auger electron spectroscopy analysis has shown almost a homogeneous distribution of the film components throughout the film thickness. X-ray diffraction revealed the presence of unoriented 1-2-3 phase besides BaF2 and CuO and, one undefined phase, which might be oxyfluoride compound.

    Notes: EOG correction is a class of techniques that account for ocular artifact in the electroencephalogram (EEG) by subtracting electrooculographic data from the EEG. The purpose of this study was to evaluate four of these correction techniques (Verleger, Gasser, & Möcks, 1982 [VGM]; Gratton, Coles, & Donchin, 1983 [GCD]; Semlitsch, Presslich, Schuster, & Anderer, 1986 [SPSA]; Croft & Barry, 2000 [CB]). Blinks, vertical eye movements (VEM), and horizontal eye movements (HEM) from 26 subjects were corrected using these techniques, and eye movement event-related potentials computed to aid validation. HEMs were corrected better by CB, VGM/GCD then SPSA, VEMs by CB, VGM/GCD then SPSA, and blinks by CB, SPSA, GCD and then VGM, with the advantage of CB substantial for blinks (η2〉.72), VEMs (η2〉.60), and HEMs (η2〉.27). It is argued that the CB procedure adequately accounts for ocular artifact in the EEG. Reasons for the limitations of the other procedures are discussed.

    Notes: This study investigated EEG differences between children with two subtypes of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and normal control subjects. EEG was recorded during an eyes-closed resting condition and Fourier transformed to provide absolute and relative power estimates for the delta, theta, alpha, and beta bands, and the mean frequency for each band was calculated. Ratio coefficients were also calculated between frequency bands. Mean group differences were found in the theta, alpha, and beta bands between all three groups. Similarly, differences were found between all three groups for the theta/alpha and theta/beta ratios and for the mean frequency of the total EEG. These results support a model of ADHD resulting from a developmental deviation rather than a maturational lag in the central nervous system. Differences between the clinical groups in frontal activity suggest that different neuroanatomical systems are involved in the different subtypes of ADHD.

    Notes: To confirm the safety and cutaneous tolerability of a new brand of baby wet wipes, we conducted the following clinical studies: (i) a double-blind in-use study in 102 infants over a period of 2 weeks, to compare skin tolerance of the wipes vs. water and a cleansing material (ii) a chamber scarification test on adults to assess the skin irritation potential of the baby wipe, and (iii) a 4-week clinical in-use study in 60 babies with atopic dermatitis, to confirm safety and skin tolerability in a sensitive skin subpopulation. In the clinical comparison with water and cleansing material, skin conditions were assessed visually for presence and severity of erythema and diaper dermatitis. The overall skin condition was not different in the group using wipes and in the group using only water and a cleansing material, indicating comparable skin mildness for both regimes. The chamber scarification test confirmed that the lotion contained in the wipe has a very low irritation potential, lower than that of a currently marketed baby wipe and comparable to that of water under occlusive patch test conditions. The good skin tolerance of the wipes was supported by the observations of a dermatologist in the clinical study in babies with atopic dermatitis. These data strongly support the suitability of the baby wipes tested in these studies for daily cleansing of the diapered area, even for infants with sensitive skin. These data also provide useful information regarding the comparative skin mildness of baby wipes and water.

    Notes: We report on the laser-induced permanent changes of the critical current (Ic) and normal resistance (Rn) of YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) step-edge Josephson junctions. The 2- to 20-μm-wide junctions were prepared from a 200-nm-thick YBCO film deposited by a pulsed KrF excimer laser onto 300-nm-high steps etched in the LaAlO3 substrate. The laser modification experiments were performed by illuminating the junctions at 50 K with a focused Ar-ion laser beam of various intensities. Depending on the illumination power density, either increase or decrease of the junction Ic has been observed. In particular, after illumination at the 0.6×105 W/cm2 power level, a 75% enhancement of Ic and increase of the IcRn product up to 25% were obtained without a measurable change in the junction critical temperature. The laser-induced modifications were very reproducible and remained unchanged even after a subsequent room-temperature/helium thermal cycling of the sample. Photoassisted, thermally activated oxygen redistribution in the YBCO grain boundary region is proposed to explain the observed behavior. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An approach for personality-based self-discrepancy (PBSD) measurement is proposed, whereby self-beliefs and incongruities among their contents are assessed with respect to five-factor model (FFM) semantic dimensions. Selves Questionnaire attributes from 191 college students were coded against L. R. Goldberg's (1990) FFM factor analysis to construct personality scores for actual, ideal, and ought self domains, as well as several PBSD indices. Multivariate analyses were conducted to test self-discrepancy and personality-structure hypotheses, and to demonstrate this strategy's operational flexibility. Profile analyses indicated that empirical self-discrepancies depend upon whether and how personality structure is incorporated. Methodological alterations influenced self-discrepancy findings negligibly. Initial evidence for PBSD construct validity and predictive specificity is presented, and the approach's implications, advantages, and extensions are discussed.
