Notes: Summary Predictions derived from an information seeking, attribution model of false autonomic feedback were tested in an experiment using a 3 × 3 design. Male students (n = 61) viewed aversive slides accompanied by either increasing, constant, or no heart sounds. They were instructed either to attend to slides and sounds labelled extraneous, or to slides and sounds labelled as their own heart beats, or to try to explain their fictitious heart beats through slide features (attribution condition). Increase and constant feedback instigated equally intense information search (measured through self-determined viewing time and heart-rate deceleration) but increased feedback did not direct the search (measured through viewing time distribution and recall) more towards negative or less towards neutral features than did constant feedback. Increased feedback enhanced rated slide unpleasantness in the attention and attribution conditions whereas constant feedback decreased unpleasantness in the attribution condition only. Correlations were consistent with the hypothesis that attributions of fictitious autonomic reactions, but not information search and actual heart rate, mediate feedback effects on stimulus valences.

Notes: Abstract A different way of processing confocally scanned fluorescence images is presented. Linear median hybrid methods and linear filtering methods are compared numerically with a conventionally processed artificial data set and with real confocal data. The use of linear median hybrid techniques reduces the time required for recording three-dimensional data sets with a confocal fluorescence microscope as well as the photo-damage to the biological sample. The implementation of a linear median algorithm on the hardware level of a confocal microscope is discussed.

Notes: We examined the role of psychopathic traits on physiological responding during a concealed information polygraph test among prison inmates (n=40). The Psychopathic Personality Inventory (Lilienfeld & Andrews, 1996) was used to assess psychopathic traits. Cardiac, electrodermal, and respiratory responses were measured while participants were presented with personal and control names and asked to conceal recognition of personal information. We first piloted the present concealed information test in a sample of undergraduates (n=27). Enhanced orienting to concealed information compared to control information was observed in both prisoners and undergraduates. However, prisoners scoring high on the Impulsive Antisociality factor of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI-II) exhibited reduced electrodermal responding. This finding indicates that the sensitivity of the concealed information test may be decreased in antisocial offenders.

Notes: A mock crime experiment was conducted to examine whether enhanced responding to concealed information during a polygraph examination is due to orienting or defensive responding. Thirty-six undergraduate students enacted one of two mock crimes. Pictures related to both crimes were presented while heart rate, magnitude of the skin conductance response, and reaction times to a secondary probe were measured. Compared to control pictures, participants showed heart rate deceleration and enhanced electrodermal responding to pictures of the crime they had committed. Probe reaction times did not differ significantly between crime and control pictures. The present findings support the idea that the orienting reflex accounts for the enhanced responding to concealed information. Theoretical and practical implications of the orienting account are discussed.

Notes: SUMMARY— A procedure is described for isolating compounds formed during the heating of solutions containing sugars and amino acids. It consists of solvent partition into ethyl ether, concentration of the solvent, high vacuum distillation in an isolated system and a final concentration. Model systems were employed, consisting of one sugar and one source of amino acids from the group: dextrose, lactose, glycine, lysine, valine, and casein. The flavor concentrate had a strong caramel odor.A total of 38 non-acidic and 5 acidic gas chromatographic components were observed, but none of the systems gave rise to all of these. The differences in the gas chromatographic patterns of extracts containing both sugars and amino acids and those containing sugars alone, were more quantitative than qualitative. While many of the components remain unidentified, those positively identified were largely sugar dehydration and degradation products. One nitrogen-containing component was identified as 2-acetylpyrrole.

Notes: A survey of 234 cases of pemphigus yielded three observations which suggest that different forms of pemphigus may have different etiologies.1. While the incidence of pemphigus in the age group of 21 and over was essentially the same in males and females (108 and 113) the incidence was significantly higher in females in the age group under 20. Only two of 13 patients in this group were males. Also pemphigus foliaceus and erythematosus was reported in a significantly higher proportion of the cases in the age group of 2 1/2 to 20 thus suggesting that the juvenile form of the discase differs from the adult form.2. In four of a group of 15 cases identified as pemphigus foliaceus the disease appeared to be provoked by minor physical insults, a frequency which is significantly higher than the five cases with similar histories in the group of 198 cases identified as pemphigus vulgaris.3. In the entire group of 234 cases two patients with pemphigus both proven by immunofluorescence had relatives with pemphigus. Also a third patient had a blood relative with bullous pemphigoid. This frequency of three per 234 is higher than would be expected by chance. Studies of one family (not included in this survey) with multiple skin antibodies suggest that such familial predispositions may be due to abnormal immune responses.
