Notes: Summary The case of a 22-year-old female suffering from glioblastoma with sarcomatous component (WHO; gliosarcoma) is presented. The tumor consisted of glioblastomatous and sarcomatouos components, and in part of the pleomorphic astrocytomatous region of the glioblastoma there was a prominent production of myxoid matrix. On the basis of its histochemical and immunohistochemical characteristics, the present case strongly suggested that glial cells of neuroectodermal origin assume part of the responsibility for production of myxoid material.

Notes: Summary The mammalian genome contains two functional loci for the production of phosphoglycerate kinase, PGK-1, an X-linked gene expressed in all somatic cells, and PGK-2, an autosomal intron-less gene expressed exclusively in late spermatogenesis. A nucleotide substitution from guanine to thymine was recently found at position 473 of PGK-1 mRNA in PGK Shizuoka. The mutation was not found in the PGK-2 gene and might have occurred after separation of PGK-1 and PGK-2.

Notes: Abstract A 13-year-old Hungarian boy (B.J. Jr.) with congenital haemolytic anaemia (CHA) and hyperkinetic torsion dyskinesia was found to have severe triose-phosphate isomerase (TPI) deficiency. One of his two brothers (A.J.), a 23-year-old amateur wrestler, has CHA as well, but no neurological symptoms. Both have less than 10% TPI activity and a highly increased dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) level in their red blood cells. Their TPI had a slow electrophoretic mobility and was heat unstable. Both parents and a third brother are healthy heterozygous carriers of the defect. A.J. represents a unique phenotype from the point of view that all published “homozygotes” had severe neurological alterations from infancy or early childhood except one infant who died at 11 months, probably too young for neurological symptoms to be noted. In contrast to the two affected Hungarian brothers all but one “homozygote” has died before the age of 6 years. The striking difference in the clinical course of the defect between the two brothers with the same severe red blood cell enzyme deficiency may originate from unusual differences between two double heterozygous brothers resulting inter alia in different levels of TPI expression in various tissues. Significantly lower TPI activities were found in both the T- and B-cells of the propositus as compared to the respective cells of the neurologically symptom-free brother.

Notes: Abstract Neuronal spike trains are regarded as stochastic point processes. To estimate the order and value of Markov processes of the interspike interval sequences with small number of samples, we have proposed a new measure of simplified statistical dependencyd m. This measure is derived from statistical dependencyd m (T=τ) in the case of Gaussian process, and is obtained by the standard deviation and the matrices of the serial correlation coefficients. Sinced m is a parametric measure, it is calculated from the interval sequence transformed into the aormal distribution. We designate this as normalized simplified statistical dependencyNd m. The order and value of the maintained spike sequences recorded from the mesencephalic reticular formation, red nucleus, optic tract, and lateral geniculate nucleus neurons in cats have been estimated. It is indicated that there is a considerable correspondence between the value ofNd m and that ofd m (T=τ). This suggests thatNd m is useful in practice to estimate the order and value of Markov process with small number of samples.

Notes: Abstract To evaluate the order and the values of Markov properties of the time series of events, we have proposed a statistical measure “dependency”:D m = (H 0 −H m )/H 0 , whereH 0 andH m are Shannon's entropy and them-th order conditional entropy, respectively. It is indicated that $$\tilde D_m = \sum\limits_{v = 1}^m {(\hat D_v - \bar D_v^{sh} } )$$ is a better point estimator ofD m, giving a total value of them-th order Markov process. Here $$\hat D_m $$ and $$\bar D_m^{sh} $$ are the estimate ofD m and the arithmetic mean of $$\hat D_m^{sh} $$ when them-th order shuffling is made many times for a given observed series, respectively. The value $$\hat D_m - \bar D_m^{sh} = d_m $$ represents Markov value of the orderm. Under the assumption that the series has continuous variables and the normal distribution, simplified dependency is defined by , where |S m | is the determinant of serial correlation coefficients. It is shown that is practically useful for the estimation of the order and the values of Markov processes with small sample size. It is also indicated that analysis is basically equivalent to the least mean-square analysis of autoregressive models.

Notes: Summary The authors analyzed the water and lipid contents of oedematous tissues of white matter obtained during the operation, comparing with the absorption value in the CT scan. As the absorption value lowered its level, the water content increased, while the lipid decreased. However, after subtracting these two components, the content of protein also showed a significant decrement parallel to the absorption value despite the existence of extravasated protein. The decrement of lipid content was considered to be due to a dilution effect by an expanded volume of extravasated oedema fluid, as well as the decrease in protein, rather than the actual loss of tissue component; that is demyelination. It is the relative decrease in protein content which contributes to the low absorption value of oedematous tissue.

Notes: Summary Intracranial pressure (ICP) was recorded continuously in 12 pre-operative patients with angiographic evidence of diffuse cerebral arterial spasm due to a ruptured intracranial aneurysm. Recordings were made for 1 to 7 days, starting within 13 days after the haemorrhage. 1. An increased ICP was observed in the first week after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) in 4 of the patients without any signs of angiographic arterial spasm. 2. This initial increase was regularly followed by a depression of ICP in between 7–12 days after SAH. In 11 out of 12 patients such a depression was concomitant with the beginning of arterial spasm. During the period of depressed ICP pattern, 6 patients showed little or no neurological deterioration, whereas 5 patients showed impaired consciousness or neurological deficits. 3. A secondary rise of ICP thereafter always followed due to ischaemic brain swelling or infarction, and was usually associated with a serious neurological deterioration. 4. Continuous ventricular drainage was performed to control the secondary increased ICP in 7 patients who survived, 4 of them with good clinical improvement and 3 with severe neurological deficits. 5. In the stage of depressed ICP, the administration of isoproterenol and steroids is recommended in order to try to alleviate the secondary rise of ICP.

Notes: Crystallization kinetics and texture evolution in iron-based amorphous alloys (Fe78Si9B13,Fe73.5Si13.5B9Nb3Cu1) under a magnetic field have been studied. We have found that the applicationof a magnetic field during crystallization at a temperature ranging the Curie point of the amorphousphase and that of the crystalline bcc-Fe(Si) phase can produce a {110} texture in the alloys. X-raydiffraction with the Schulz method revealed that {110} oriented grains were preferentially nucleateddue to the magnetic field. The studies of crystallization kinetics found that the nucleation rate of theα-Fe(Si) phase in amorphous Fe73.5Si13.5B9Nb3Cu1 was enhanced approximately three times as highwith the 6T magnetic field than without field. The volume fraction of crystalline α-Fe(Si) phaseproduced was increased by the magnetic field

Notes: Human IgE synthesis requires the presence of both interleukin 4 (IL-4) and T-cells. However, it is not clear what role IL-4 and T-cells play in the induction of IgE synthesis at the level of gene regulation. B cells that were obtained from patients with a high level of serum IgE and from healthy donors were immortalized by Epstein-Barr virus. We examined IgE production of these B cells stimulated with IL-4. Supernatant IgE levels of patient's B cells cultured with or without IL-4 were higher than those of healthy donor's B cells. Our results indicated that B cells stimulated with IL-4 from patients produced IgE, germline C ε transcript, and S μ S ε recombination. The germline C e transcript was dose-dependently induced in the presence of IL-4 and related to the supernatant IgE level. In B cells stimulated with IL-4 that were obtained from patients, (some of the) DNA near or within the I e region was (already partly) unmethylated, unlike those from healthy donors, and there was a loss of methyl groups of the DNA upon the addition of IL-4 in B cells from both patients and normal donors. IgE synthesis of B cells stimulated with IL-4 in patients with a high level of serum IgE is due to an accessibility in the immunoglobulin heavy-chain isotype switch, and this may reflect the accessibility in synthesis of germline C ε transcript, which may be caused by the increase of opening chromatin structures because of their unmethylation in the I ε region.
