Notes: Abstract A mixing model is coupled with fermentation kinetics in order to simulate a fermentation as a function of mixing conditions and scale-up. The mixing model for a batch stirred tank with three stirrers consists of three regions, each of them characterized by an ideally mixed compartment around the stirrer and two macromixers, i.e. cascades of tank-in-series, describing the recirculation flow. The model contains four parameters — radial and axial circulation time, volume of the ideally mixed stirrer compartment and the number of tanks in each cascade. These values, determined by Mayr et al. in function of the operational conditions and scale-up, were choosen to simulate the fermentation of glutamic acid to show the pH-fluctuation at different control and scale conditions. By choosing optimal regulation properties, such as input flow rate and/or concentration of the base, regulation span, position of the pH-electrode and base input location, etc., fluctuations of the pH-value in the bio-reactor can be minimized. However, the negative effect of insufficient mixing conditions can be reduced only by an increasing number of the base input places. In large scale fermentors, the axial circulation time is rather high, about 5–10 times larger than the radial one. This might result in a large amplitude of the pH-fluctuation. As it is shown, using an input place for base in each stirrer region, the negative impact of the insufficient axial mixing on the fermentation can be diminished perfectly. In this case ammonia should be fed into the reactor as an aqueous solution.

Notes: Abstract An aorto-duodenal fistula, an infrequent complication of abdominal aortic aneurysm, was diagnosed on the basis of characteristic CT findings: signs of leakage of the aneurysm, blood-filled duodenum and jejunum, and small gas collections within the wall of the aneurysm. The role of imaging techniques in the diagnosis is discussed and the importance of dynamic contrast-enhanced CT is emphasized.

Notes: Abstract Heart rate changes were measured as a psychophysiological indicator during grasping reflex in 27 full-term healthy newborns at 2.5–50 h after birth. A significant heart rate deceleration accompanied the grasping response. Conclusion Reflex grasping of a mother's hand, as a component of human attachment behaviour, may have a positive calming effect on the infant's state and could have therapeutic value for high risk mother-infant dyads.

Notes: Summary A comparative pharmacokinetic study was performed with two types of suppository each containing 20 mg piroxicam. The bioavailability of piroxicam was studied in 24 healthy volunteers in a double blind, randomised, cross over study. No significant difference was found in the pharmacokinetic parameters [AUC(0–72 h), AUC, Cmax, t1/2β calculated from plasma concentration time curves, indicating that the two preparations were bioequivalent.

Notes: Recently one of the most significant research-field in the development of amorphousalloys is the research of the Cu-based amorphous alloys. The Zr-based alloys developed earlier canbe replaced by the newly developed Cu-based alloys as the high price of the Zr-based alloys limitstheir utilization in spite of their favourable properties. Production of Cu-based alloys having thesame or more favourite properties than Zr-based alloys is cheaper and this fact can promote theirincreasing utilization. Cu-Zr-Ti and Cu-Hf-Ti alloy systems – they are Cu-based alloys – haveexcellent mechanical properties. In this paper investigations of crystallization of amorphousCu44,25Zr36Ag14,75Ti5 powder produced by ball milling (these processes have not been investigatedyet according to the reference data) are described. In the course of investigation of thecrystallization process, samples were heated to a temperature of investigation by means of a DSCequipment and the developed state was frozen by chilling. The investigation of the developedstructure and to identify the phases formed during heat treatment, X-ray diffraction method wasused

Notes: Copper alloys have many properties, which make them suitable in wide-rangingapplications in all the engineering industries. For the investigated alloys the most importantproperties are hardness, strength and electrical conductivity. Precipitation hardenable alloys werestudied by Jominy end-quench test, in order to examine the change of hardness, electricalconductivity and microstructure as a length of the test bar (i.e. cooling rate). In the first step sampleswere solution treated at different temperatures, then water quenched followed by aging. Cold-workafter quench was applied in some alloys and improve in the properties was clearly seen. Thefollowing Cu-alloys were investigated: Cu-Co-Ni-Be, Cu-2Be-Ni and Cu-2Ni-Be

Notes: The ageing phenomena and its effect on the thermoelastic martensitictransformation was investigated in three Cu-base SMAs. The transformation temperaturesshifted to higher temperatures due to aging in the beta-phase.To increase the alloy’s ductility, a definite amount of Mn (4 wt%) and Fe (2 wt%) were addedto the ternary alloy. The thermoelastic martensitic transformation was found in the not-agedsamples of the CuAlNiMn and CuAlNiMnFe alloys. This transformation was destroyed dueto ageing heat treatments by a fairly unknown exothermic process. The thermoelasticmartensitic transformation appeared again in the aged CuAlNiMn and CuAlNiMnFe samplesafter keeping them on room temperature for a few months. This phenomena was investigated by DSC, SEM, TEM, and XRD
