Notes: Focusing, as well as diffraction effects experienced by the stress wave produced by the argon–fluoride excimer laser ablation of corneal tissue have been studied in artificial and real eye samples. The evolution of the laser-induced acoustic front was imaged by means of fast shadowgraphy in an artificial eye model, while the absolute temporal profile of the pressure transient along the optical axis was directly measured in enucleated porcine eyes by a needle hydrophone inserted into the eyeball. Observations pointed out that the finite size of the acoustic source gave rise to diffraction effects during propagation, as the development of a negative tensile phase in the pulse shape, while the spherical shape of the acoustic source produced focusing of the wave front, causing pressure enhancements up to a factor of 3 in real eyes. The implications to surgical laser procedures as photorefractive keratectomy are discussed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Stress generation induced by laser ablation was modeled by adapting the variable energy blast theory in the condition of laser–target interaction in air that allowed us to obtain the scaling law of the peak and the temporal profile of the pressure pulse. Measurements of the acoustic transient propagating inside the bulk during excimer laser ablation of polyimide, performed by means of polyvinyldenefloride piezoelectric sensors, were successfully compared with the behaviors provided by the theoretical model. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract An extensive investigation based on the redox potential and grain size distributions was made on the sediment of a Venice Lagoon mud flat subjected to excessive growth of macroalgae. Redox potential and grain size measurements are proved useful “tracers” for, respectively, oxygen bearing and consuming processes in the water-sediment column and hydrodynamical behavior inside the mud flat. Depth measurements and a considerable number of sites with respect to the size of the area studied are needed to obtain an outline of the behavior of the water body in response to stress conditions caused by human activities. With respect to the top 15-cm-thick sediment layer where EH variations occur, the mud flat is subdivisible into sectors with different characteristics. Positive or near-zero EH values were recorded in zones characterized by sparse macroalgae growth and a high content of coarse sediments (diameter ⩾44 µm). On the contrary, very negative EH values were found in zones affected by overabundant macroalgae bloom and with a higher presence of fine-grained sediment (diameter ⩽44 µm). The clear relationships between algae presence in the mud flat and both the redox potential and grain size characteristics of the sediment emphasize the hydrodynamics as a “critical factor” determining the variations of the environmental conditions in the ecosystem.

Notes: Abstract High-quality materials processing on transparent substrates of BK7 glass, fused silica, corundum and ruby using a copper vapour laser (CVL) is described and discussed. The driling process using the radiation emitted by a small diffraction-limited CVL is described and investigated by optical diagnostic methods allowed by the transparency of the materials. In particular the hole making was entirely monitored in real time through a video camera. Images achieved in this way are reported to illustrate the morphology of the hole and of the ejected materials via the time-resolved fluorescence. This investigation provides the evaluation of the plume expansion speed, while the imaging supplies the quantitative evaluations of the drilling speed and threshold. The high quality of the hole in terms of wall smoothness and elevated aspect ratio is described in detail. We report according to our findings an interpretation of the peculiar combination of physical processes involved.

Notes: Abstract This paper establishes a heat semigroup version of Bernstein's theorem, applicable to any unimodular Lie group. The result has an intrinsic geometric content, involving estimates for the norms of the heat kernels for small time and large time. The theorem is stated in terms of certain Lipschitz spaces whose definition incorporates these two geometric features of the group in question. The geometric content is further underlined by showing that, in a certain sence, the theorem is best-possible.

Notes: Abstract A standard corona preionized XeCl laser prototype has been excited by a very simple L-C circuit consisting of a large storage capacitance charged at relatively low voltage (12 kV) and discharged via a switch on the electrodes, tightly coupled with the peaking capacitors. The resulting overvoltage following the switch closure behaves as an effective and automatic prepulse, providing a homogeneous discharge lasting up to 400 ns. Energy output levels of the order of 150 mJ at 1.4% overall efficiency have been achieved.

Notes: Abstract High-efficiency frequency conversion in H2 of a nitrogen laser oscillator-amplifier system is described. The laser system provides about 1 MW output power with a very low intrinsic divergence. Up to 3 Stokes lines at 392, 468, and 581 nm and 3 Anti-Stokes at 296, 263, and 237 nm, respectively, have been observed at the output of the 60 cm long H2 Raman cell. Peak power values of 500, 300, and 70 kW have been measured for the first 3 Stokes, respectively, corresponding to a 56% pump energy conversion efficiency. A comparison between free and guided propagation (in a hollow dielectric waveguide) is also reported, for various values of the pump intrinsic divergence.
