Notes: Abstract Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viciae and Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii have separate uptake systems for 4-hydroxybenzoate and protocatechuate. The 4-hydroxybenzoate uptake system (pobP) is inhibited by a range of compounds with substitution at the 4-position on the aromatic ring whereas the uptake system for protocatechuate (pcaP) is markedly inhibited only by other dihydroxybenzoic acids. The rate of 4-hydroxybenzoate uptake is very low in Rhizobium leguminosarum and Rhizobium trifolii grown on protocatechuate but mutants defective in 4-hydroxybenzoate uptake transport protocatechuate at rates similar to the wild-type grown under similar conditions.

Notes: Abstract Two-photon photoemission is a promising new technique that has been developed for the study of electron dynamics at interfaces. A femtosecond laser is used to both create an excited electronic distribution at the surface and eject the distribution for subsequent energy analysis. Time- and momentum-resolved two-photon photoemission spectra as a function of layer thickness fully determine the conduction band dynamics at the interface. Earlier clean surface studies showed how excited electron lifetimes are affected by the crystal band structure and vacuum image potential. Recent studies of various insulator/metal interfaces show that the dynamics of excess electrons are largely determined by the electron affinity of the adsorbate. In general, electron dynamics at the interface are influenced by the substrate and adlayer band structures, dielectric screening, and polaron formation in the two-dimensional overlayer lattice.

Notes: We audited and analysed the adverse effects and safety of postoperative pain management on 2509 consecutive patients under care of the Acute Pain Service at a tertiary referral teaching hospital over a 32-month period. Our standard respiratory monitoring consisted of continuous pulse oximetry, hourly respiratory rate counting, sedation scoring and intermittent arterial blood gas sampling. This protocol was reliable and detected six episodes of bradypnoea, 13 of hypercapnia and 23 of oxygen desaturation occurring in 39 patients (1.8% of all spontaneously breathing patients). Two patients required naloxone injection and none had long-term sequelae. Hypotension due to epidural bupivacaine 0.0625% and fentanyl 3.3 μg.ml−1 infusion occurred in four patients (1.2%), all with a sensory block higher than T5. They readily responded to fluid infusion and ephedrine (two patients). Postoperative nausea or vomiting occurred in 723 (28.8%) and 380 (15.1%) patients, respectively. Odds ratio analysis showed that the risk factors for postoperative nausea and vomiting were: female gender, gynaecological operations, nongeriatric patients and systemic analgesia. Postoperative nausea and vomiting decreased analgesic efficacy by discouraging the use of patient-controlled analgesia and was regarded as equally distressing as pain. Other side-effects included: pruritus in 182 patients; dizziness in 333 and lower limb weakness in 73 (21.2% of patients receiving epidural local anaesthetics). It is concluded that a standard monitoring and management protocol, an experienced nursing team and reliable Acute Pain Service coverage is mandatory for the safe use of modern analgesic techniques.

Notes: The effects of arginine vasotocin and the pineal indoles melatonin, serotonin, Nacetylserotonin, hydroxytryptophol, methoxytryptophol, hydroxyindoleacetic acid, methoxyindoleacetic acid, and methoxytryptamine on lipolysis and lipogenesis in isolated adipocytes were studied. Basal lipolysis was inhibited by all the indoles tested at a dose of I μmole except hydroxytryptophol. Methoxytryptamine and serotonin inhibited hormone-induced lipolysis in a dosedependent manner and exhibited the highest antilipolytic activity in isolated rat, rabbit, and hamster adipocytes. However, their antilipolytic activity could not be overcome by increasing the dose of the lipolytic hormone. Dibutyryl cyclic AMP-induced lipolysis was also inhibited. All the pineal indoles tested were capable of suppressing basal and insulin-stimulated lipogenesis in the dose range 0.33–3 nmole. At lower doses there was no effect. Arginine vasotocin at a dose of 25 nmole significantly augmented basal lipogenesis.

Notes: Abstract The orthogonal superposition of small and large amplitude oscillations upon steady shear flow of elastic fluids has been considered. Theoretical results, obtained by numerical methods, are based on the Leonov viscoelastic constitutive equation. Steady-state components, amplitudes and phase angles of the oscillatory components of the shear stress, the first and second normal stress differences as functions of shear rate, deformation amplitude and frequency have been calculated. These oscillatory components include the first and third harmonic of the shear stresses and the second harmonic of the normal stresses. In the case of small amplitude superposition, the effect of the steady shear flow upon the frequency-dependent storage modulus and dynamic viscosity has been determined and compared with experimental data available in literature for polymeric solutions. The predicted results have been found to be in fair agreement with the experimental data at low shear rates and only in qualitative agreement at high shear rates and low frequencies. A comparison of the present theoretical results has also been made with the predictions of other theories. In the case of large amplitude superposition, the effect of oscillations upon the steady shear flow characteristics has been determined, indicating that the orthogonal superposition has less influence on the steady state shear stresses and the first difference of normal stresses than the parallel superposition. However, in the orthogonal superposition a more pronounced influence has been observed for the second difference of normal stresses.

Notes: The internal flows inside a backswept centrifugal impeller at off-design point conditions are analysed by solving the fully three- dimensional Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the k-∊ two-equation turbulence model. Conditions analysed have flow rates of 85 per cent and 113 per cent of the design rate. The calculated results are compared with published experimental data and the comparison shows good agreement. A jet wake structure occurs near the outlet of the impeller for each of the two off-design flow rates and the location and size of the jet wake structure seem to be independent of the flow rate.
