    Notes: Abstract The beta-gamma spectroscopic study of22O is presented. This nucleus, produced as a projectile-like fragment from the interaction of a 60 MeV/n40Ar beam with a Be target, has been separated by the LISE spectrometer. Several gamma rays from22O decay have been observed, from which a half-life of (2.25±0.15)s has been determined. Accurate excitation energies have been deduced for several states in22F. A partial beta decay scheme of22O has been established. Experimental results have been compared with shell model calculations.

    Notes: Abstract Ten infants and children who presented with craniofacial dysostosis are discussed; four had Apert's syndrome, four had Crouzon's syndrome, one had Pfeiffer's syndrome, and one had hypertelorism. The follow-up of the patients ranged from 3 months to 7 years, with an average of 19 months. Patients had bifrontal and biparietal craniectomies to correct frontal and temporal orbital retrusion, while two had left unilateral procedures only. One patient (T.S.) had had three similar procedures before he was 3 years old and patient B.B. had two before he was 11 months old due to the complete failure of bony orbital growth. Before the cranial surgery, one patient had a preexisting esotropia with bilateral congenital sixth nerve paresis, one had a V-pattern exotropia, and one had a right intermittent hypotropia due to right superior rectus weakness. In no case was there a change in the ocular alignment after infantile craniectomy. There were assorted ophthalmologic anomalies, such as congenital bilateral sixth nerve paresis, absent superior rectus function, bilateral ptosis in addition to absent superior rectus function, and two patients presented with frank and repeated exorbitism.

    Notes: Summary Three families with androgen resistance syndromes — two with testicular feminization and one with Reifenstein syndrome — have been studied for linkage analysis. Using three cloned DNA sequences from the centromere region and the proximal long arm of the X chromosome (p8, pDP34, and S9, which define respectively the chromosomal segments DXS1, DXYS1, and DXS17), we found no recombination between the DXS1 locus and the mutant genes in the three families. Assuming that these disorders are the result of allelic mutations at the same locus for the androgen receptor, we can conclude that there is a close linkage between DXS1 and the androgen receptor locus, with a maximum lod score ž=3.5 at a recombination fraction θ=0.0 using the LIPED program (Ott 1974).

    Notes: Abstract Androgen controls the expression of β-glucuronidase and several other proteins in the kidney of the standard laboratory mouse,Mus musculus. Other species within the genusMus exhibit a variety of response patterns for kidney β-glucuronidase and other markers of androgen action. We have investigated the mechanism of androgen action inM. caroli, aMus species that does not produce β-glucuronidase in response to testosterone. The failure of testosterone to induce β-glucuronidase inM. caroli females cannot be overcome by treatment with dihydrotestosterone, with pharmacological doses of testosterone propionate or dihydrotestosterone propionate, or with a variety of potent androgen analogues. All of these compounds induce kidney β-glucuronidase inM. musculus females and kidney ornithine decarboxylase, submandibular gland renin, and submandibular gland epidermal growth factor in bothM. caroli andM. musculus females. Furthermore, kidney androgen receptor proteins fromM. caroli andM. musculus animals have the same sedimentation characteristics on sucrose density gradients. These data indicate that androgen resistance inM. caroli is not due to deficient 5α-reductase or aberrant hormone metabolism producing suboptimal levels of functional androgen and is not caused by a defective androgen receptor. They suggest that the resistance of β-glucuronidase inM. caroli kidney to induction by androgen occurs at the level of the β-glucuronidase gene.

    Notes: Abstract Thirty-one American and 31 Egyptian children were given the Slaby-Frey Gender Concept Test to measure gender understanding of children from two cultures assumed to differ in level of androgyny. The subject's sex, age, parent's education, and siblings' sex and age were explored in relation to gender concept. A multivariate analysis of variance (Nationality × Sex of Subject) yielded a significant nationality effect. American children had a higher mean score on gender identity than Egyptian children. In addition, a Pearson product-moment correlation revealed significant positive relationships between the age of the subject and two gender constructs, identity and stability. Future research on specific cognitive, developmental, and cultural influences on the gender development of young children was proposed.

    Notes: Summary 1. Catecholamines are transported into chromaffin granules via a carriermediated, active-transport process which is inhibited by micromolar concentrations of the sulfhydryl reagent,N-ethylmaleimide (NEM). Reserpine is a very potent, competitive inhibitor of the catecholamine transporter and can be used to investigate the characteristics of the catecholamine transporter. 2. The purpose of this study was to determine whether [3H]reserpine binding to the catecholamine transporter present in chromaffin granule membranes isolated from bovine adrenal glands was also inhibited by NEM and, if so, whether this was a direct or an indirect effect of NEM on the catecholamine transporter. 3. Both [3H]norepinephrine transport into and [3H]reserpine binding to the chromaffin granule ghosts isolated from bovine adrenal glands are inhibited by NEM, with IC50 values of 0.63 ± 0.02 and 2.8 ± 0.66µM, respectively. 4. Mg and ATP protected both the [3H]norepinephrine transport into the ghosts and the [3H]reserpine binding to the transporter from inhibition by NEM, shifting the IC50 values to 260 ± 43 and 120 ± 29µM, respectively. 5. NEM inhibition of the catecholamine transport and reserpine binding appears to be due to an action on the proton translocator associated with the Mg ATPase enzyme rather than a direct action on the catecholamine transporter since (a) the concentration of NEM required to inhibit formation of a membrane potential is similar to that required to inhibit [3H]norepinephrine transport into and [3H]reserpine binding to the ghosts and (b) Mg and ATP protected the proton translocation and [3H]norepinephrine transport into the ghosts, and [3H]reserpine binding to the ghosts, from inhibition by NEM. 6. The results support the concept that reserpine is binding to the catecholamine site on the granule membranes and that binding of reserpine requires the presence of a membrane potential.
