Notes: A simple test rig was developed to assess the force applied during the application of cricoid pressure. Anaesthetists and paramedical personnel familiar with Sellick's manoeuvre were tested yielding results which indicate an unacceptably wide variation in performance in each group. The mean force was 46.4 N but 47% failed to reach a force of 44 N.In addition a survey was undertaken of trained anaesthetic staff to identify the current status of the manoeuvre. Of those sampled 78% routinely employed Sellick s manoeuvre and over 70% had experienced a problem with its application which exposed the patient to the risk of regurgitation.

Notes: A study of cricoid pressure was undertaken to relate the applied cricoid force with the resulting intraluminal cricopharyngeal (or oesophageal) pressure. The results indicate that whilst there was a wide range in normal adults a cricoid force of 44 N was judged to be effective in protecting the majority of adult patients from regurgitation.

Notes: Abstract. The exact cellular site of replication of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) in carrier fish is unknown. In order to determine if IPNV replicates in trout leucocytes, we purified leucocytes from normal (non-carrier) trout and separated the cells into an adherent and a non-adherent population. IPNV replicated in less than 0-01 % of the adherent leucocytes with a yield of about 400 p.f.u./cell. IPNV also became associated with less than 0.07% of the non-adherent leucocytes; either IPNV did not replicate in these cells or the yield was, at best, only a few p.f.u./cell. Trout persistently infected with IPNV (carrier fish) were tested for the presence of IPNV in leucocytes by co-cultivating with a sensitive fish cell line; this same population of trout was also tested for IPNV by organ sampling using standard methods. Ninety-eight per cent of the trout were positive for IPNV by organ sampling, but only 75 % yielded IPNV from leucocytes. Thus a blood sample from a living fish can be used to detect the presence of IPNV.

Notes: The endometrium of 100 women attending a menopause clinic was assessed cytologically, using the Isaacs cell sampler, and then histologically, using the Vabra suction curette. Satisfactory specimens for diagnosis were obtained in 96 per cent of cases with the Isaacs cell sampler and in 62 per cent of cases with the Vabra suction curette. There were eight discrepancies between the diagnoses obtained by the cytological and histological methods and these are analysed. Thirty patients were asked to grade the discomfort experienced during the procedures, and of these 26 found the Vabra method more painful than the Isaacs method.

Notes: Summary An account is given of stillborn male twins born to a female Saanen goat (Capra hircus) and a Barbary ram (Ammotragus lervia). The cytogenetics of the cultured hybrid cells are described and attention is drawn to the high proportion of cells which lacked one chromosome.

Notes: Abstract The relative importance of two organochlorine pesticides in the recent reproductive failure of raptors was investigated. Captive barn owls were fed 3.0 ppm DDE and 0.5 ppm dieldrin; doses were given separately and in combination for two years. Breeding success was followed from the laying of eggs through natural incubation and rearing of young. DDE was associated with significant eggshell thinning, egg breakage, embryo mortality, and reduced production per pair. Dieldrin alone was associated with slight but significant eggshell thinning, but not with reduction of breeding success. Ecological implications of the results are discussed; it is suggested that DDE had a much more severe effect on reproduction in wild raptors than dieldrin, which contributed to their decline primarily through adult mortality.

Notes: Abstract Wings from woodcock (Philohela minor) were first monitored for organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the eastern U.S. in 1971. Regional differences in these compounds were clearly demonstrated and baseline residue levels were obtained for later comparisons. An expanded sampling of wings in 1972 revealed that residues in wings of adult woodcock may differ significantly from those in immatures, and that residues of several important agricultural insecticides and PCBs had declined significantly. More extensive sampling was undertaken in 1975 to determine if changes in residue levels had taken place in the intervening years. PCBs, mirex, and heptachlor epoxide increased significantly between 1972 and 1975 in adult woodcock wings. In immature woodcock wings mirex, dieldrin, and PCBs increased significantly between 1972 and 1975, but DDT residues decreased significantly.

Notes: Abstract This paper reviews evidence on the incidence, correlates, and implications of voluntary childlessness in the United States. Overall, the evidence points toward the increasing prevalence of this phenomenon, with some analysts projecting that as much as 30 percent of recent cohorts of American women will remain permanently childless. These high rates are shown to be similar in magnitude to rates of childlessness projected for recent cohorts of women in several European countries with fertility patterns comparable to those of the United States. Explanations for the increasing prevalence of childlessness are also considered. The second half of this paper examines existing evidence on the correlates of voluntary childlessness. In this connection, special attention is paid to education, area of residence, labor force status, income, and geographic mobility. This section also explores the implications of increasing childlessness and selected ways to redistribute the cost of children.
