Notizen: The kinetics of the reaction between permanganate ion and triethylamine in aqueous phosphate buffers (pH 6-8) has been studied. The reaction is autocatalytic, a soluble form of colloidal manganese dioxide temporarily stabilized in solution by adsorption of phosphate ions on its surface having been identified as the autocatalyst. The reaction is also catalyzed by gum arabic. Mechanisms in agreement with the kinetic data are proposed for the reaction pathways taking place in the bulk solution (for both triethylamine and triethylammonium ion as reductants) and on both the gum arabic and manganese dioxide colloidal particles.

Notizen: The kinetics of the permanganate oxidation of formic acid in aqueous perchloric acid has been studied. The results indicate that this reaction is autocatalyzed by both manganese(II) ion (formed as a reaction product) and colloidal manganese dioxide (formed as an intermediate). The apparent rate constants corresponding to the noncatalytic and autocatalytic reaction pathways are given, respectively, by the following equations \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{l} k_1 = (k_1^{bc} /[{\rm H}^{\rm +}] + k_1^{nc} + k_1^{ac} [{\rm H}^{\rm +}]^3)[{\rm HCOOH]} \\ k_2 = (k_2^{bc} /[{\rm H}^{\rm +}] + k_2^{nc} + k_2^{ac} [{\rm H}^{\rm +}]^3)[{\rm HCOOH]} \\ \end{array} $$\end{document} The activation energies associated with the true rate constants, k1bc, k1nc, k1ac, k2bc, k2nc, and k2ac are 37.2, 62.5, 70.9, 52.5, 40.8, and 59.9 kJ mol-1, respectively. The percentage of the total reaction corresponding to each pathway is given for typical experimental conditions. Mechanisms in agreement with the kinetic data are proposed for the six different reaction pathways observed.

Notizen: The reaction between chromium(VI) and L-ascorbic acid has been studied by spectrophotometry in the presence of aqueous citrate buffers in the pH range 5.69-7.21. The reaction is slowed down by an increase of the ionic strength. At constant ionic strength, manganese(II) ion does not exert any appreciable inhibition effect on the reaction rate. The rate law found is \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ r = k_p k_r [Cr({\rm VI})][{\rm L - ascorbic\,acid][H}^{\rm + }]/(1 + k_p [H^ +]) $$\end{document} where Kp is the equilibrium constant for protonation of chromate ion and kr is the rate constant for the redox reaction between the active forms of the oxidant (hydrogenchromate ion) and the reductant (L-hydrogenascorbate ion). The activation parameters associated with rate constant kr are Ea = 20.4 ± 0.9 kJ mol-1, ΔH≠ = 17.9 ± 0.9 kJ mol-1, and ΔS≠=-152 ± 3 J K-1 mol-1. The reaction thermodynamic magnitudes associated with equilibrium constant Kp are ΔH0 = 16.5 ± 1.1 kJ mol-1 and ΔS0 = 167 ± 4 J K-1 mol-1. A mechanism in accordance with the experimental data is proposed for the reaction. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: The equations necessary for the determination of the rate constants corresponding to the opposite elementary steps for formation of the oxidant-reductant ester intermediate, as well as that corresponding to its redox decomposition, in the reduction of chromium(VI) by glutathione and other thiols at physiological pH have been deduced. It is shown that those three rate constants can be obtained with a good reproducibility. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
