    Notes: The removal rates of the lower levels of the XeF(B→X) excimer laser transitions strongly affect the overall efficiency of the E-beam-pumped devices. We have deduced the removal rates of XeF(X,v) in argon, helium, and neon by measuring the populations of vibrational levels v=0, 1, 3, and 4 formed by the photolysis of XeF2. The time history of each vibrational population is monitored with a cw tunable dye laser tuned to an absorption feature of the selected vibrational/rotational level. The studies show a rapid vibrational relaxation followed by a common decay rate of the coupled vibrational levels. Helium and neon were found to remove these levels with the same rate coefficient of (2.0±0.2)×104 (s Torr)−1 at room temperature. The corresponding rate coefficients for argon were larger by about 25%. The removal rate coefficients increased with temperature in the range of T=23–95 °C. The rate coefficient for the vibrational excitation of v=0 by helium was measured to be (3.6±0.7)×105 (s Torr)−1 at room temperature. This is considerably larger than the value of (4.8±1.5)×104 (s Torr)−1 previously reported by Fulghum et al. Fast vibrational relaxation is required to empty the lower levels of the laser transitions so that vibrational "bottlenecking'' does not terminate the laser prematurely.

    Notes: The deactivation rate coefficients for the removal of DF (v=3) and DF (v=4) by H and D atoms have been measured at 295 K by the technique of laser-induced fluorescence in a discharge flow-tube apparatus. The rate coefficients were found to increase dramatically with vibrational level v. Data obtained for the removal of DF (v=4) in the presence of H atoms have been used to infer a rate coefficient of (4.5±2)×1011 cm3/mol s for the reaction H+DF (v=4)→HD+F. This is in good agreement with a value calculated from the equilibrium constant and a previous measurement of the F+HD rate coefficient obtained by Berry.

    Notes: Abstract Health-related quality of life (QoL) questionnaires are commonly developed as content valid instruments with conventionally defined domain subscales. We contrasted content valid domain subscales with construct valid construct subscales and developed a 13-domain QoL questionnaire, the Breathing Problems Questionnaire (BPQ), for patients with chronic bronchitis. In a series of studies, we examined the constructs relevant to COPD patients' experience of health. First, we provided psychometric evidence that items in the BPQ form two distinct groups: functional problems and negative evaluations. Second, we showed that problems were significantly more correlated with morbidity whereas negative evaluations were significantly more correlated with neuroticism. Third, we showed that negative evaluations correlated with neuroticism whereas positive evaluations (measured by the Satisfaction with Illness Scale) correlated with extraversion. Patients are more likely to make positive evaluations of their Illness when they recognize that they are seriously ill. Most of the BPQ domains are subcategories of the construct of problems: both domains and construct classifications provide useful information.

    Notes: The reaction of CH3 with OH has been studied near 1200 K and 1 atmosphere pressure in shock tube experiments in which UV absorption was used to monitor [OH]. A rate coefficient of (1.1 ± 0.3) × 1013 cm3/mol-s was measured for removal of OH by CH3. This measured value is compared with previous experimental data and calculations. Several possible reaction channels are discussed, and although products were not monitored, it seems probable, on the basis of other work and theoretical estimates, that the primary mechanism (≃75%) for the removal of OH by CH3 at these conditions is their combination to form CH3OH. Rate coefficients of (5.3 ± 0.8) × 1012 and (9.0 ± 1.4) × 1012 cm3/mol-s were measured for the reactions of OH with acetone and ethane, respectively, at the same temperature and pressure.

    Notes: Reactions of the hydroxyl radical, OH, with several organic species of interest in combustion chemistry have been studied near 1200 K and 1 atm in shock tube experiments in which UV absorption was used to monitor the OH concentration. Rate coefficients were measured for the reactions of OH with 2,3-dimethylbutane, isooctane, neooctane, ethylene, propylene, acetylene, formaldehyde, methanol, and ethanol. The values were found to be (in units of 1012 cm3/mol-s): 21, 22, 18, 2.6, 9.6, 0.28, 12, 5.2, and 5.3. These measured values are compared with previous experimental results and, where appropriate, transition-state theory calculations.
