Notes: 1. Calcium did not influence the spontaneous release of vasopressin from rat neurohypophyses in vitro when used in concentrations of 0·05, 0·5 and 2·8 mM in the bathing medium.2. Stimulation of the basal output of vasopressin by angiotensin II (1 · 10–9 M) required at least 0·5 mM calcium in the medium.3. Angiotensin II stimulated the release of vasopressin within 2·5 min of incubation, maximal release was observed after 10 min.4. Angiotensin II rapidly promoted the accumulation of tissue cyclic AMP; maximal accumulation was observed after 5 min of incubation.5. Theophylline and dibutyryl cyclic AMP produced varying degree of stimulation of the release of vasopressin.6. Increases in vasopressin secretion and in the accumulation of cyclic AMP were always present when neurohypophyses were exposed to optimal concentrations of angiotensin II. The results presented suggested that cyclic AMP may be an intermediate step for the release of vasopressin by endogenous angiotensin II.

Notes: Sleeping disease (SD), a disease of freshwater-reared rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), was histologically compared to pancreas disease (PD), a disease of sea water-reared Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. Some weeks after injection of kidney homogenates from SD- or PD-affected fish in rainbow trout, the fish successively developed pancreatic, heart and muscular lesions in both populations, although the SD-injected population was the most affected. An acquired protection was observed against PD and SD after an initial injection with PD- or SD-infective material. This acquired cross-protection and the similar histopathologies in PD and SD suggest the two diseases could be caused by a similar or identical agent.

Notes: : The importance of estimating peak water demands for determining the dimensions of pipe size and meters which provide household water to multifamily residences is examined. Several methods utilized in North America and Europe are examined. The analysis makes clear the necessity of studying the peak water demand through statistics based on local data concerning multifamily residences. For different periods of return, the peak demand of a given apartment building is related to its size (the number of apartments) in order to compare the results obtained with existing formula.By use of Ridge-regression technique, the relationship between peak water demand, and building size (number of apartments) and available pressure is established. It can be concluded that peak demand can be estimated with the square root of number of apartment units in the building and the cube root of water pressure.

Notes: Abstract We present a microscopic analysis of the nuclear spin response to proton excitation by examining the specific case of the40Ca $$(\vec p,\vec p')$$ reaction. Recent results at LAMPF indicate an interesting trend of a decrease in spin dipole strength and an increase in quadrupole strength when the proton momentum transfer is increased. We show that these effects are consistent with Random Phase Approximation (RPA) results and that, furthermore, the experimental spin response can be used to yield unequivocal information on the strength of the spin-isospin component of the nuclear interaction.

Notes: Abstract We study the isospin dependence of the isoscalar giant quadrupole response to pion excitation, with the aim of showing that the apparent anomaly in the π−/π+ analyses is due to the highly selective nature of surface pion absorption. In that context, we present results of continuum RPA calculations which are consistent with recent inelastic pion scattering data on58–64Ni. In general, the calculation predicts a drastic increase in the ratio of neutron to proton transition density in going from56Ni to66Ni, a trend well substantiated by recent LAMPF experiments.
