Notes: Summary Pre-implantation embryos were recovered from control, diabetic and insulin-treated diabetic rats on day 5 of pregnancy. Compared to control animals, diabetic rats had a 20 % reduction in the number of embryos per rat and blastocysts recovered from diabetic rats showed a 19 % decrease in total cell number. The cellular decrease observed in blastocysts was mainly at the expense of the inner cell mass. Insulin replacement therapy was started on day 1 of pregnancy and normalized the glycaemia of diabetic rats but failed to raise the number of embryos per rat toward the control value. Insulin treatment, however, fully restored the normal cell number in both the inner cell mass and trophectoderm of blastocysts. The dead cell index, which was significantly elevated in the inner cell mass of blastocysts from diabetic rats, also returned to the control value following insulin treatment. Our data suggest that diabetes-induced impairment of pre-implantation development can be partly prevented by insulin treatment started shortly after conception.

Notes: Abstract In this work we investigate the performances of a passive sampler (GABIE badge) in industrial atmospheres, in accordance with the general specifications of the EN 838 standard. The field experiment was carried out in a paint-manufacturing factory producing a large number of pollutants at the workplaces. A comparison was performed between the results obtained by passive sampling and the conventional tube/pump method (reference method) on nine solvents usually encountered in the different workshops: n-butanol, isobutanol, toluene, ethylbenzene, m-xylene, methylisobutylketone, methylethylketone (MEK), ethyl acetate, butyl acetate. Results were compared by use of the distribution of the relative difference between badge “passive sampling” and tube “active sampling” results (with the latter considered as the reference method). In general, results revealed good agreement between passive and active sampling (except in the case of MEK) and confirmed the accuracy of sampling rates determined for the GABIE sampler. Bias was generally low and variability could be considered to be satisfactory (generally 〈20% with a maximum of 30% for ethylbenzene). For MEK, strong bias was noted together with probable underestimation of the tube results. Additional results lead us to suggest that this phenomenon could be due to poor desorption of the SKC tubes by carbon disulphide (CS2); (quantitative recovery for MEK is in fact possible using other desorption solvents).

Notes: Summary After a brief review of several methods described in the literature this paper discusses air-sampling on 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine-coated silica gel and identification requirements for aldehydes and ketones most commonly found in industrial pollution. Quantitative analysis of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde either by GC or by HPLC techniques is established using a dynamic system producing test atmospheres and compared with the usual colorimetric determinations.

Notes: Summary Air sampling of ethylene oxide on HBr-treated charcoal tubes followed by capillary GC analysis of the 2-bromoethanol produced allows pollution control evaluation for concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 20 mgm−3. The adequacy of the method is assessed taking into account ambient temperature and relative humidity.

Notes: Summary Air sampling of ethylene oxide on active charcoal tubes followed by GC analysis is a frequently proposed method. This paper studies just to what extent it can be used, defining its limitations (concentration range, influence of ambient temperature and relative humidity), which are seldom taken seriously into account. This method proves inadequate to determine low pollution levels, i.e. around 2 mg m−3.

Notes: Summary The sampling of atmospheric polar organic compounds (amines, aldehydes, acids) generally requires the use of solid supports such as porous polymers. In most cases, resort to thermal desorption proves necessary. After reviewing the various possible adsorbents and the thermal desorption procedures decribed in the literature, this paper points out the possibilities and limitations of the technique, taking as a simple example toluene on activated acharcoal. A practical and reliable “Internal calibration” method is proposed.
