    Notes: Fifty married and 50 unmarried, cohabiting couples were asked to describe four problems which occurred in their relationshipproblems in which one partner was unhappy about the other's behavior, or in which the two of them disagreed about joint decisions. DesDite overall similarity of the kinds of problems reDorted by married and cohabiting- roiinles. marriea women were particularlv likely to complain that their nusDands did not give them sutticient attention. Husbands were especially unlikely to mention tnat their wives were too independent. After specirying two alternative behaviors for each partner in the problum situation, couples rated their degree of satisfaction with each of the four resulting behavioral combinations. Wives rated themselves as more unhappy when their problem arose than cohabiting partners rated themselves, and husbands were least unhappy. Wives' overall satisfaction was affected by their problem situation most of all, husbands' least of all, and cohabitors' satisfaction to an intermediate degree. Results were discussed with reference to the greater advantage that husbands derive from marriage than wives.

    Notes: This study concerns decisionmaking by men who serve as third parties in disputes between two other individuals. A study was made of hearings at which a government official (O) attempted to judge the merits of a wage claim brought by a worker (C) against his former employer (D). O's attitudes before and after the hearing were assessed, and a content analysis was made of a script of the hearing process. O was the most active participant in the interaction. O developed more attitudinal structure about the case than he had had initially, and showed an increase in the degree of his evaluative differentiation between the contending parties. Unexpectedly, the consistency of O's attitudes about each party decreased somewhat in cases where he announced a decision. A striking pattern of evidence occurred concerning the special relation that usually developed between O and the “loser” of the case (the party less preferred by O at the end.) He reacted more negatively to the loser than he did positively to the winner. It was suggested that a postdecision contention between O and the loser was triggered by O's revelation of his judgment and that the subsequent interchange resulted in O's having a clear and negative view of the loser at the conclusion of the hearing.

    Notes: Abstract Questionnaires were used to investigate (1) stereotypes about what young couples do and say during their conflicts and (2) reports (by actual young couples) of what each one is likely to do or say. The two sets of data yielded much the same pattern of results. The female is expected and reported to cry and sulk and to criticize the male for lack of consideration of her feelings and for insensitivity to his effect on her. The male is expected and reported to show anger, to reject the female's tears, to call for a logical and less emotional approach to the problem, and to give reasons for delaying the discussion. The Study I expectations for sex differences during conflict are held to about the same degree by the female and male respondents. In both studies, the differences were found to depend primarily on sex of the person and not on the particular problem involved in the conflict. The results are interpreted in terms of the interaction between a conflict-avoidant person (the male) and his partner (the female), who is frustrated by the avoidance and asks that the problem and the feelings associated with it be confronted.
