    Notizen: CoNiPt and CoNiPd thin films were investigated for high-density longitudinal recording media. The samples were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering. Concentration of Pt or Pd was controlled by changing the number of Pt or Pd chips put on the Co 20 at. % Ni target. It was observed that the coercivity of the samples increased with increasing the Pt or Pd concentration. The x-ray diffraction intensity of Co(002) of the CoNiPt and CoNiPd samples also increased as Pt and Pd content increased, respectively. As a result, it was found that the coercivity increased as the intensity of Co(002) in both films increased. There was no significant difference between CoNi and CoNiPt and CoNiPd films in SEM surface micrographs. The cause of the difference in coercivity may be attributed to the difference in magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the films.

    Notizen: The interaction of two continuous wave electric fields (lasers) with a two-level molecule, that has a nonzero difference d, between the permanent dipoles of the two states involved in a multiphoton two-color transition, is studied in the rotating wave approximation and by using exact methods. Analytical rotating wave approximation results for the time-dependent populations of the molecular states and for the resonance profiles are derived and used to help discuss the effects of permanent dipole moments in the two-color absorption problem. Several examples of multiphoton, two-color, two-level resonance profiles calculated in the rotating wave approximation and by using exact techniques, are employed for illustrative purposes. They are used to help quantify the conditions for the validity of the two-color rotating wave approximation, which are considerably more restrictive than the analogous conditions for the one-color rotating wave approximation with d≠0, and to illustrate the interpretive and predictive nature of the rotating wave approximation results. For example, there are many multiphoton, two-color transitions that are available if a molecule possesses permanent dipoles (d≠0). The analytic rotating wave approximation expression for the molecule-two laser coupling can often be used to reliably estimate the field parameters of the two lasers that are required to optimize a given transition relative to others.

    Notizen: A nonzero difference, d, between the diagonal dipole moment matrix elements, μjj, of two molecular states involved in either one- or two-color multiphoton transitions, can have substantial impact on the temporal evolution and spectral behavior of the states. The effects of d≠0 are investigated in this paper for two-color transitions in a two-level system previously studied in one-color molecular beam electric resonance (MBER) experiments on symmetric top molecules. The calculations suggest a two-color analog to the one-field experiments, where the flexibility furnished by the field parameters of the two continuous wave electric fields, including relative phase, can be used to advantage. Both exact Floquet calculations and the rotating wave approximation (RWA) are used in this study. Analytic RWA expressions for the one- and two-color molecule-laser(s) couplings are particularly useful in helping to interpret and/or predict the effects of d≠0. The novel aspects of two-color laser-molecule interactions, relative to the one-field case, are emphasized. In addition to investigations related to MBER studies, this work contributes to the more formal aspects of two-color laser-molecule interactions. It is shown that very useful analytical two-level RWA solutions for the on-resonance temporal behavior of the molecular states are available, even in the presence of competing resonances, whereas off-resonance numerically useful analytical results are available only when one multiphoton resonance dominates a transition. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: An orthogonally spin-adapted coupled-cluster (CC) linear response (LR) method, to calculate first-order static properties of closed-shell systems, is formulated and implemented. Cluster operators are truncated at single and double excitations (CCSD-LR approach) and the explicit first-order CCSD-LR equations, in terms of molecular integrals and zeroth- and first-order cluster amplitudes, are given. Various aspects of the computer implementation of the CCSD-LR approach are discussed. In particular, the efficiency of the CCSD-LR approach is compared with corresponding finite field calculations. Advantages of using the LR approach are illustrated by calculating electrostatic multipole moments for CH2 and HF at equilibrium and displaced geometries. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Cluster operators are truncated at the single and double excitation level (CCSD-LR approach) and previously published [A. E. Kondo et al., J. Chem. Phys. 102, 6511 (1995)] first-order CCSD-LR equations, in terms of molecular integrals and zeroth- and first-order cluster amplitudes, are generalized to an arbitrary order. Static properties, including electrostatic dipole and quadrupole moments, polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities, are calculated for the lowest singlet state of CH2 and for the ground state of HF at both equilibrium and displaced geometries. The advantages of the LR formalism vs the finite field approach, particularly when evaluating higher-order properties for highly stretched geometries, are pointed out. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The addition of l-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (Asc 2-P). which is active and stable under a conventional culture condition. could render dermal fibroblasts to the organization of a dermislike structure on a plastic dish without any prior treatment. The cell layer was composed of multilayered fibroblasts surrounded by dense extracellular matrices. Confocal microscopic examination disclosed that the fibroblasts in the upper layer were spindle-shaped and those in the lower layer were polygonal. Electron microscopic examination revealed the accumulation of mature collagen fibrils in the intercellular space. These morphological observations suggest that the cell layer may resemble the dermis-like structure. Biochmical analyses revealed that the hydroxyproline content of the cell layer increased in a time-dependent manner. while the monolayer culture system without Asc 2-P yielded no measurable amount of hydroxyproline. On sodium dodecylsulphate-polyacryl-amide gel electrophoresis. neutral insoluble collagens extracted from the cell layer showed the identical electrophoretic pattern to those from the human dermis. In addition. these bands were completely digested by bacterial collagenase. This novel culture system could provide a simple tool with which to investigate the collagen metabolism by fibroblasts under more physiological conditions.
