Notes: [Auszug] Recent advances in the manufacturing technology of low loss optical fibres have made possible serious systems design and testing. But this has highlighted the fact that the mechanisms involved in the propagation of light in multimode fibres were at best, poorly understood. New measurement ...

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a theory for the operation of thin-film thermo-optic bistable devices. Special attention is paid to free-standing films. After a review of nonlinear Fabry—Perot resonators and how they work we solve the heat equation in the thin film subject to a heating effect. Switching speed and optical power consumption are functions of the rate of change of temperature in the presence of a heat source. The interplay of heat loss from the surface of the film with heat diffusion within the film complicate the dynamics considerably. Quantitative results are derived for the dependence of speed and power on the dimensions of the active region of the optical element. It is found that diffusion transients can effect more rapid switching at the expense of power but only for infrequent operation.

Notes: Abstract We describe the performance of a 100 channel free-space concave grating demultiplexer with 1dB transmission passband of ±7GHz (FWHM 14–22GHz). The influence of optical aberrations and defocusing on the transmission spectrum is demonstrated. Crosstalk between neighbouring channels separated by 〉0.3nm is lower than −25dB and no penalty due to crosstalk is observed using 2.6Gbit/s directly modulated DFB lasers. Penalty-free transmission through a cascade of 30 demultiplexers is demonstrated in an optical fibre recirculating loop experiment, and the permitted tolerances on the laser frequency misalignments for a larger number of cascaded demultiplexers are investigated.

Notes: Abstract A thin rod sample is thermally clamped at both ends to provide a rigid mounting and a thermal short-circuit for heating effects associated with surface losses. The ends are index matched with liquid to minimize sample preparation. A laser beam is focused through the sample and the temperature rise due to the absorbed energy is monitored at its centre. Sensitivity is limited to a few dB km−1 optical loss with a laser of 100 mW power. The theory is discussed in detail for this particular geometry and experimental verification presented.

Notes: Abstract We describe a technique of using a variable wavelength source to study mode cut-offs up to aV value of 20 for the optical fibre by means of the radiated (scattered) power leaving the fibre. This allows the identification of individual modes in a fibre carrying up to 80 or 100 modes in all and provides a non-destructive method for the study of the length and bend dependence of the energy carried by the highest order modes.

Notes: Abstract The wave equation for a weakly guiding medium having a cylindrical symmetry and parabolic index distribution has been solved exactly. Simple power series are obtained for the field distributions of the modes, which illustrate the type of fields that will be found in graded core fibres away from the core cladding discontinuity. These results are discussed and compared to the modes predicted for other types of fibres.

Notes: Abstract A coupler is described which allows the excitation of pure single guided fibre modes with a single mode laser. The coupler uses a prism and precision taper fibre end to access any of the fibre modes. The conditions for obtaining excitation of single modes are discussed and the technique for producing the tapers is described. In the first tests, an excitation efficiency of approximately −16 dB has been obtained.

Notes: Abstract A novel optical crossconnect architecture, capable for tens of terabit throughput and allowing the integration of wavelength and space switching, is presented for both WP and VWP networks. The architecture offers significant advantages in terms of crosstalk performance and node complexity. In the architecture, there are no crossovers and crosspoints. Therefore, the signal-to-crosstalk ratio per wavelength channel can be very high since each channel is processed independently from the others. This will also allow to introduce other all-optical techniques like adding/dropping of OTDM channels as well as optical regeneration. The proposed architecture is wavelength and link modular and particularly suitable for crossconnects with a very large number of wavelength channels. Performance aspects of a single as well as of a cascade of crossconnects have been simulated using a simulation tool.
