    Notizen: Tweezer-Shaped Hydrocarbons1,8-Bis[(arylethynyl)phenyl]- and -[(arylethenyl)phenyl]anthracenes of type I (e.g. 9, 6a) and 1,8-bis{[(arylethynyl)phenyl]-ethynyl}- and -{[(arylethenyl)phenyl]ethynyl}anthracenes of type II (e.g. 16, 13) were synthesized for the first time. Their hydrocarbon framework is formed by Grignard coupling and by Hagihara coupling, respectively. An X-ray analysis of 13 exhibits an approximate planar skeleton, only one aromatic ring showing a considerable deviation from that plane (Figure 2). The UV and fluorescence properties are discussed. In spite of their preorganized and rather rigid tweezer-shape the new hydrocarbons do not seem to use their multiple bonds for the cooperative binding of transition metal cations.

X-ray analyses of 4 and 6 illustrate the dramatic deformation of bond lengths and angles in these molecules.

    Notizen: Dendrimers with bulky repeating units containing up to 43 benzene rings (in 9) have been obtained by using a repetitive divergent synthetic strategy (three generations). The new functional dendrimer 13 containing six azobenzene units at the periphery was synthesized allowing a reversible switching of the shape and size of the molecule upon irradiation. An X-ray structure analysis of the dendritic molecule 3a shows the inclusion of acetonitrile.

    Notizen: Adamantane as a Building Block of New Araliphanes - Synthesis, Spectroscopy, and Crystal StructuresExchange of benzene units for aliphatic building blocks in cyclophanes leads to new molecules of the “araliphane” type. With adamantane the araliphanes 2 - 4 are synthesized. Their stereochemical behavior as shown by NMR studies and X-ray crystallographic analyses differs significantly from that of their aromatic counterparts. The signals of the intraannular adamantane hydrogens are strongly shifted upfield up to δ=- 2.18 (in 2). 4 is obtained as a racemic mixture of enantiomers (in the crystalline state) and shows a boat-like deformation of the benzene moiety.

    Notizen: Molecular Tweezers from Cyclophane Building BlocksMolecular tweezer compounds 1-6 with convergent carboxyl groups are prepared from suitable functionalized [2.2]-and dithia[3.3]metacyclophane building blocks by using several multistep strategies. The C—C coupling of two cyclophanes according to the Hagihara method leads to alkynespacered double cyclophanes. These new preorganized, acyclic host compounds of the cyclophane-type react as molecular tweezers and can selectively “grasp” guest molecules and bind them strongly. X-ray analyses underline the syn conformations of the dithia[3.3]- and the anti conformation of the [2.2]metacyclophanes.

    Notizen: Eleven novel piperazine containing open-chain ligands L1-L11 were designed to offer symmetrical and asymmetrical complexation sites for metal ions and were synthesized by repetitive synthetic method. The divergent use of aromatic bishalomethyl and mono-N-alkylated piperazine compounds as spaces led toa series of long (up to M. W. = 836) oligomeric multidentate N-ligands. Due to the lack of solid state methods for structure analysis, an NMR technique using 113 Cd nucleus as a probe in solution state was utilised. 113 Cd chemical shifts were observed to be dependend on the coordination site and similar coordination sites in different ligands gave characteristically similar 113 Cd chemical shifts. As a result 113 Cd-NMR spectroscopy proved to be an excellent tool to distinguish between the structures of the different complexation sites on a nearly quantitative level.
