Notizen: The effect of high ascorbic acid (AA) levels transferred through enriched live food was evaluated for turbot Scophthalmus maximus larvae in two consecutive feeding experiments. The same feeding strategy was applied to all treatments, except for the AA content of the live food which was manipulated through bioencapsulation with ascorbyl palmitate. This resulted finally in a low, medium and high-AA treatment. The AA incorporation levels in the turbot larvae (up to 1400 μg AA g DW−1) were correlated with the AA content of the live food administered. However, feeding the high AA concentration resulted in the same values as for the medium treatment, indicating a saturation of the body AA reserves. Under standard culture conditions, no differences in growth nor overall survival could be detected among the different groups, illustrating that the dietary AA requirements of larval turbot are met by non-enriched live food containing already 500 μg AA g DW−1. The larvae of the high-AA treatment, however, showed a better pigmentation rate (47 and 32% for experiments 1 and 2, respectively) compared to the other groups (35 and 25%, respectively). Evaluation of the physiological condition applying a salinity stress test revealed an improvement by feeding extra AA, significantly in the medium-AA treatment. Though not significantly different, cumulative mortalities after challenge with Vibrio anguillarum amounted to 50% for the control v. 40% for the fish fed medium and high-AA diets, respectively. Moreover, the onset of mortalities in this study was slower (not significantly) for the fish fed the extra AA.

Notizen: Abstract A dense nitrifying culture (ABIL) has been examined for its capacity to stimulate rotifer growth in a labscale culture system. The nitrifiers were applied in different ways. When ABIL was added directly to rotifer batch cultures, it gave rise to significantly higher population densities (factor 1.5–2.5 higher, P 〈 0.05). The nitrifiers were subsequently examined for their capacity to enhance the start-up of bioreactors, commonly installed in aquaculture rearing tanks. Of the different carrier materials used in these bioreactors, i.e. CaCO3, gravel and a PVC matrix (Bionet), CaCO3 gave by far the best results. In a third set of experiments, effectively nitrifying bioreactor systems were connected to rotifer culture tanks and operated over a period of up to 10 days. It was demonstrated that the ABIL inoculated CaCO3-based bioreactor allowed excellent rotifer growth reaching rotifer densities up to 5500 rotifers per mL. Moreover, a new system in which the ABIL culture was recirculated through hollow fibres was developed and demonstrated to be effective for supporting rotifer growth up to 3500 rotifers per mL. Overall, the use of the dense nitrifying culture either in seed batch cultures, conventional bioreactors or hollow fibre bioreactor systems in support of rotifer cultures was demonstrated to be effective for improving the water quality and the rotifer growth.

Notizen: Two series of feeding experiments were conducted to study the feasibility of using decapsulated Artemia cysts for direct feeding to ornamental fish. The first series evaluated the dietary values of the dried and the brine decapsulated Artemia cysts against two conventional live feeds, Artemia nauplii and Moina for adults and fry of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata Peters. In the second series, brine cysts were used for feeding to fry of four other important ornamental fish species, viz. platy, Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther), swordtail, X. helleri (Heckel), molly, P. sphenops Cuvier & Valenciennes and black neon tetra, Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi Géry, and the results were compared with those fed Moina. Evaluation of the performance of the fish fed the various diets was based on stress resistance, growth and survival of the fish. Our findings indicated that decapsulated cysts could be used as a substitute for Artemia nauplii or Moina in freshwater ornamental fish culture. Apart from being a hygienic off-the-shelf feed, the direct use of the cysts also signifies a new area of application for low-hatch cysts in the ornamental fish industry, with concomitant saving in feed costs.

Notizen: Postlarvae of tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon (Fabricius), were fed semipurified diets supplemented with various levels of astaxanthin (AX) and ascorbic acid-polyphosphate (ApP): three groups were fed 230 mg AX kg−1 diet combined with 100, 1700 and 3400 mg ascorbic acid (AA) kg−1 diet, respectively; two diets contained 810 mg AX kg−1 mixed with 200 and 1700 mg AA kg−1, respectively. Each treatment was run in four replicates. Incorporated levels of AA and AX, production output, and physiological condition were recorded after 4 weeks of feeding. Whole-body AA (21-47 μg g−1) and AX, concentrations (19-35 μgg−1) were linked to dietary ApP and AX supply, respectively, although not significantly for the latter. The biomass of the group receiving the lower dietary ApP-AX combination was significantly lower than for all other treatments, i.e. 3.1 versus 3.9 g, respectively. In the groups fed 230 mg AX kg−1 diet, significant differences in stress resistance were observed according to the dietary ApP level, i.e. raising the vitamin C content in the feed from 100 to 3400 mg AA kg−1 resulted in a concomitant drop in mortality after an osmotic shock. For the treatments receiving 810 mg AX kg−1 diet, the beneficial effect of extra dietary vitamin C was not significant. An increase in the dietary AX for shrimp fed comparable ApP levels resulted in a significant drop of the stress index from 56 to 33 (cumulative mortality index). An increased resistance to salinity shock was demonstrated in association with supplementation of high dietary AA or AX levels. No conclusive results regarding possible improved disease resistance could be made since no mortality was observed after a disease challenge with Vibrio harveyi.

Notizen: The effect of a potential probiotic on the growth performance of a rotifer and its inhibition against Vibrio anguillarum was studied. Probiotic strain AR21 had no significant observable effect on the growth rate of rotifers under optimal culture conditions in three consecutive experiments. In the first and second experiments, the AR21 strain exhibited an inhibitory effect against the V, anguillarum strain when rotifer cultures were maintained at a suboptimal feeding regime. The growth rate of the rotifers in suboptimal feeding conditions was significantly higher in the treatment receiving AR21 and V. anguillarum than in the treatment where only V. anguillarum was added.

Notizen: In this study, one-cycle and multi-cycle culture systems for Artemia in seasonal salt ponds are compared. In one-cycle systems, Artemia is inoculated only once per season, while in multicycle systems ponds are drained and re-stocked several times per season. In Vietnam, three-cycle systems gave significantly higher cyst yields than did the one-cycle system. However, after two cycles, systems were not significantly different. Food limitation probably caused the steady decline in cyst yields, as observed in the one-cycle ponds. In these ponds, females have smaller broods (from the second cycle onwards) and during the last cycle the number of adult females is lower than in multi-cycle ponds.

Notizen: Two experiments were carried out to determine the quantitative lipid requirements for ovarian maturation of Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone) broodstock. The first experiment tested the effect of total dietary lipid (TDL) levels of 8.1%, 8.8%, 9.8% and 11.2% on the gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI), survival and body weight. The second experiment tested the effect of total dietary levels of highly unsaturated fatty acids (TDH) 0.6%, 1.3%, 2.0% and 2.7% on the same parameters mentioned above and on the haemolymphatic vitellogenin (vg) concentration. The GSI was higher in females fed 8.1% TDL as compared with those fed 8.8% TDL (P ≤ 0.05), and higher in females fed 8.1% and 8.8% TDL than in those fed 9.8% and 11.2% TDL. Increasing TDH levels led to increasing levels of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in the ovaries (r2 = 0.999). However, the GSI was not affected by dietary treatments (P 〉 0.05). The vg concentration was higher in animals receiving 2.0% TDH as compared with those receiving 2.7% TDH. In conclusion, high TDL levels affected ovarian maturation in a negative way, why TDH levels had no pronounced effect on ovarian maturation within the range tested in this study.

Notizen: Samplings were organized in three marine fish hatcheries. Samples were taken at different steps during the production of algae, rotifers and Artemia. There were 233 dominant colony types isolated for further characterization. The isolates were compared to each other and to reference strains of Phorobacrerium, Vibrio and Alreromonas, using cellular fatty acid fingerprints. Fatty acid profiles of the isolates were grouped using principal component analysis. The isolates fell into at least ten major groups, of which two correspond to the genera Vibrio and to Alteromonas, respectively. Some groups seem to be restricted to a particular type of live food or isolation site. Although 43% of the isolates belong to Vibrio, only a minority of them could be readily assigned to known species.

Notizen: Live food enrichment techniques, using formulated diets and emulsions for improving the nutritional quality of Brachionus and Artemia, were studied as a tool for transferring ascorbic acid (AA) to fish larvae. Artemia nauplii enriched for 24 h with an experimental emulsion containing 20% HUFA and 0%, 10% and 20% ascorbyl palmitate (AP) were administered to catfish larvae in a 20-day feeding trial. Survival was not affected by the dietary AA, but from day 7 onwards a significantly positive effect of supplemental AA on growth was demonstrated. At the end of the experiment the 20% AP group weighed 30% more than the control (0% AP), i.e. 9.5 and 6.3 mg DW, respectively. Evaluation of the physiological condition was demonstrated by salinity tests. In all three treatments larval growth was relatively low, and it still has to be verified if extra vitamin C in the diet really promotes growth. Seabass larvae fed on AP-enriched rotifers (days 4–12) and Artemia nauplii (days 13–46) showed no significant differences in production characteristics nor in stress resistance, however, for all salinity stress tests the 20% AP group performed better. AA was well incorporated into the predator larvae from the Brachionus feeding onwards.
