Summary Intoxication by parathion or paraoxon paralyses the respiration of the anesthetized or the decerebrated cat or rat (even if atropine is given for protection). The paralysis of respiration is caused manly by blocking the neuromuscular transmission, and is reversed by the spezific enzyme reactivating antidote pyridine-2-aldoxime methiodide (PAM). A higher dose of the alkylphosphate paraoxon paralyses the central control of respiration (the action potentials of the phrenic nerve disappear during the artificial ventilation of the animal). The paralysis of the central control of respiration is reversed by an unspezific analeptic drug (metrazol), but not by PAM.
