    Notes: Abstract Active transport of calcium across the duodenum was measuredin vitro in rats growing normally and in rats during undernutrition and subsequent rehabilitation. In rats growing normally duodenal calcium transport was an inverse function of age and the length and mineral concentration of the femur. Duodenal calcium transport was reduced during undernutrition and was stimulated when the undernutrition was relieved. Calcium transport was not related to age nor to the size and composition of the femur during undernutrition and rehabilitation. Under all the conditions of the study calcium transport across the duodenum was a direct function of rate of growth. This finding supports the view that calcium absorption is related to the needs of the organism at the time. Duodenal calcium transport, which was reduced in slowly growing rats, both undernourished and not undernourished, could be stimulated with small amounts of 1,25-DHCC but not with large amounts of cholecalciferol or 25-HCC. These findings may suggest that the growth rate of the body has a bearing on the production of and or metabolism of 1,25-DHCC.

    Notes: Abstract A specimen illuminated by coherent light is imaged by a camera through a shearing mechanism so that the speckle from one point on the surface can be made to interfere with the speckle from a neighboring point. The resultant speckle pattern is recorded. By mechanically interfering the recorded speckle pattern corresponding to deformed and undeformed states of the specimen, respectively, using double-exposure technique, a speckle-moiré-fringe pattern is generated. These fringes which depict derivatives of deflections of the specimen are made visible by spatial-filtering technique. Speckle-moiré fringes can also be obtained in real time. This method is a new interferometry and will be referred to as “speckle-shearing interferometry”. Speckle-shearing interferometry has the same function as Ligtenberg's technique. However, it does not have the sometimes inconvenient requirement of Ligtenberg's technique that the surface of the specimen must be of mirror quality. The new technique will be particularly useful in studies of flexural deformation such as flexed beams and plates. Although speckle-shearing interferometry is an interferometric method, it overcomes several of the limitations associated with holographic and speckle interferometries, namely: (1) the setup is simple and does not need laborious alignments of optical components, (2) it does not require stringent mechanical and ambient stabilities, (3) coherent requirement of light is greatly relaxed, and (4) the sensitivity is reduced that somehow fills the gap in sensitivity between moiré techniques and holographic or speckle interferometry.

    Notes: The effect of gas-phase singlet molecular oxygen (1ΔO2) upon several solid polymers was investigated by using electron paramagnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, and chemical detection techniques. The study was performed by use of 1ΔO2 produced by microwave discharge. The application of this method to polymer studies was closely examined. The saturated-chain polymers polystyrene, polyurethane, and polyethylene were found to be inert within the experimental conditions to reaction with 1ΔO2, while the unsaturated polymers cis-polybutadiene, trans-polybutadiene, and trans-polyisoprene were found to react quite readily in an apparently surface or near-surface limited reaction to produce hydroperoxide and/or peroxide groups. The introduction by homogeneous mixing of some known metal-chelate 1ΔO2 quenchers into the polymer trans-polyisoprene appeared to significantly decrease the rate of oxidation observed.
