Notes: Summary The angiographic demonstration per se of cerebral deep medullary veins does not necessarily indicate abnormality. Their visualization, under normal conditions, depends on the selectivity of injection, the quality of radiographic imaging, and the quantity of contrast material injected. Normal deep medullary veins were recognized in the late venous phase of two-thirds of normal selective internal carotid angiographies; their location most often was adjacent to the atrium and posterior body of the lateral ventricle. Normal and abnormal deep medullary veins can be differentiated in terms of appearance-time, caliber, length and regional distribution.

Notes: Abstract The ascending genome size in Gossypium is assumed to be D, A, B, E and F, and C. Feulgen cytophotometry revealed that mean value of DNA content for each genome was D= 10.95, B = 13.88, F = 14.31, E = 18.24, A = 18.66, and C = 20.30, and that there is a close relationship of genomic chromosome size and DNA content. Evidence suggests that the five genomes with large chromosomes arose from a D genome-like progenetor by large scale, saltatory replication of repetitive DNA distributed uniformly through the ancestral genome. Corresponding adjustment in recombination units did not accompany the two-fold divergence in DNA value of the two homoeologous A and D genomes in the allotetraploid species.

Notes: Abstract Networks containing neuronal models of the type considered in the previous paper can be described by a set of first order differential equations. Steady-state solutions and the stability of these solutions to small perturbations can be obtained. Networks of physiological interest which give rise to second, third and fourth order linear equations are analysed in detail. Conditions are derived under which such networks can be condensed into a single neuron of similar order. Simple mechanisms for memory storage, for the generation of oscillatory activity and for decision making in neural systems are suggested.

Notes: Abstract Previous neuronal models used for the study of neural networks are considered. Equations are developed for a model which includes: 1) a normalized range of firing rates with decreased sensitivity at large excitatory or large inhibitory input levels, 2) a single rate constant for the increase in firing rate following step changes in the input, 3) one or more rate constants, as required to fit experimental data for the adaptation of firing rates to maintained inputs. Computed responses compare well with the types of neuronal responses observed experimentally. Depending on the parameters, overdamped increases and decreases, damped oscillatory or maintained oscillatory changes in firing rate are observed to step changes in the input. The integrodifferential equations describing the neuronal models can be represented by a set of first-order differential equations. Steady-state solutions for these equations can be obtained for constant inputs, as well as the stability of the solutions to small perturbations. The linear frequency response function is derived for sufficiently small time-varying inputs. The linear responses are also compared with the computed solutions for larger non-linear responses.

Notes: Summary In this study the bacteria isolated from eye infections belonged to different groups and showed a varied clinical picture. The pathogenic bacteria, Pseudomonas (15 cases) and Proteus sp. (11 cases), were associated with purulent infections of the conjunctiva and eyelids. These bacteria were resistant to the usual antibiotics, but responded to treatment with gentamicin. The potential opportunistic pathogens, Herellea vaginicola (2 cases), Enterobacter agglomerans (11 cases), Comamonas terrigena (2 cases), Serratia marcescens (2 cases), Escherichia coli (2 cases), Citrobacter freundii (1 case), Citrobacter diversus (1 case), Klebsiella pneumoniae (8 cases), Aeromonas hydrophilia (2 cases), and Enterobacter aerogenes (8 cases), were isolated from keratitis, conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis and keratoiritis. The bacteria were sensitive to the usual antibiotic substances, and all of them responded to chloramphenicol. The Enterobacter aerogenes was almost always found in association with other microorganisms, such as Herpes simplex virus and Candida sp.
