    Notizen: The structural state of an alkali feldspar is determined by the nature of the distribution of Al and Si in the tetrahedral sites of the feldspar structure. This state is a function of a number of genetic controls including temperature, cooling rate, deformation, crystal size, and several chemical factors. Together these controls constitute a genetic regime. Identification of the structures of detrital feldspars may enable recognition of genetic regimes and be useful in provenance interpretation and mineral province definition.A 2-peak method of X-ray diffraction (XRD) determination as a variant of an earlier proposed 3-peak method of structural state determination is used in this study. Total analytical time for each determination is about 50–55 min per grain. Results of structural state identification of 126 detrital feldspars from Holocene stream sands derived from volcanic, plutonic and metamorphic rocks are presented in order to illustrate the application and potential of the technique. Detrital feldspars from the metamorphic rocks are all maximum microcline; those from the plutons range from orthoclase to microcline depending on the age of the pluton, whereas those from the volcanic rocks are sanidines.

    Notizen: Summary 1. β-Bungarotoxin, crotoxin and taipoxin, presynaptic neurotoxins of snake venom origin, have about the same phospholipid-splitting activities as a much less toxic cobra phospholipase A2 in the presence of Ca2+ and deoxycholate. 2. Sr2+ was a much less effective activator of the enzymes than is Ca2+, the activation by Sr2+ being only 3–6% for β-bungarotoxin and crotoxin and 12% for taipoxin. 3. Sr2+ also inhibited the Ca2+-activated enzymes by 80% in the cases of β-bungarotoxin and crotoxin, but only 16% in the case of taipoxin. 4. Mg2+ had no significant effect on β-bungarotoxin or crotoxin, but activated taipoxin in the presence or absence of Ca2+. 5. In Sr2+-Tyrode lacking Ca2+ all three toxins exhibited the same immediate depression followed by facilitation in the rat and mouse diaphragms, but the final blocking activity was only 3–10% with β-bungarotoxin and crotoxin and was 30% with taipoxin. 6. In Sr2+-Tyrode, increasing in the rate of nerve stimulation had less accelerating effect on the development of neuromuscular block than in Ca2+-Tyrode for any of the toxins. 7. Removal of Mg2+ from Sr2+-Tyrode did not diminish the potency of taipoxin in blocking neuromuscular transmission, suggesting that enzyme activity at the outer surface of the axolemma does not contribute to the neuromuscular blocking action. 8. All of the results indicate that there are close correlations between the presynaptic activities of these toxins and their phospholipid-splitting activities in the cationic environment prevailing in the axoplasm. Apparently the final blocking effect of these toxins is due to phospholipase A action within the nerve terminal.

The effects of nifedipine (3×10−11–3×10−6 M) on contractile activity and transmembrane action potential (AP) were studied in isotonically contracting cat papillary muscles and in isolated SA-nodes. 2. Nifedipine (3×10−8–3×10−6 M) reduces the amplitudes of contraction. The effect is nearly independent of stimulation rate such that at 6/min the ED50 amounts to 6.1×10−7 M as compared to 5.1×10−7 M at 60/min. This negative inotropic action can be nearly completely antagonized by raising [Ca2+] o . 3. Nifedipine induces short-lasting negative stair-cases developing upon step increases of stimulation rate. Raising [Ca2+] o does not counteract this effect. 4. Nifedipine exerts a dual action on the amplitudeinterval relationship for simple test contractions elicited after a variable period of rest and preceding conditioning stimulation: (i) a flattening of the initial part of the “restitution” curve and (ii) a depression of the steady-state level reached after 2–10 s of rest. Raising [Ca2+] o elevates the steady state to control level but does not reestablish the initial slope of the curve. 5. Nifedipine, while leaving resting potential, maximum rate of depolarization and overshoot unaffected, tends to abbreviate the AP duration. Since this effect is more pronounced at lower frequencies, the usual prolongation of the AP occurring at low stimulation rates is inhibited. The AP plateau is depressed, but this effect seems to be stronger at higher stimulation rates. 6. In isolated SA nodes nifedipine (3×10−7–1×10−6 M) decreases discharge rate by reducing both the rate of the slow diastolic depolarization and the maximal diastolic potential until intranodal conduction blocks occur. 7. It is concluded that the negative inotropic action of nifedipine results mainly from diminished transmembrane Ca supply, with a slight action on internal sites of cardiac e.-c. coupling.

    Notizen: Abstract Data collected monthly for one calendar year from Holstein cows lactating under Louisiana ambient climatic conditions comprised a total of 264 cowmonths. The year was divided into seasons of cool, intermediate, and hot temperatures. A highly significant (P〈0.01) relationship between plasma progesterone and animal age (r=−0.57) was observed. Plasma progesterone concentrations in the hot season (4.6 ng/ ml) were significantly (P〈0.01) higher than concentrations in the cool and intermediate seasons (3.4 and 3.8 ng/ ml, respectively). Plasma cortisol concentrations were lower (P〈0.01) in the hot season than in the cool and intermediate seasons and suggested the adrenal cortex did not contribute to the increase in progesterone concentrations which occured in the hot season. A significant (P〈0.01) positive correlation (r=0.45) between cortisol and progesterone was observed. Reproductive status did not have a statistically significant effect on progesterone levels and the affect of season on progesterone concentrations was consistant across all reproductive status. Plasma progesterone levels in the anestrus animals (3.9 ng/ ml) suggested progesterone secretion was responsible for their failure to cycle. Similar progesterone levels were observed in normal (3.5 ng/ ml) and repeat breeders (3.6 ng/ ml).
