Notes: The non-H-2 linked, lymphocyte activating determinants (LADs), which are coded by the minor (histocompatibility) lymphocyte stimulating locus (Mls), were detected on B lymphocytes, but not on immunoglobulin (Ig) negative or on theta positive T lymphocytes. These determinants, like the complement receptor and surface IgD, develop late in neonatal life. Thus, the Mls coded LADs mark a population of B lymphocytes which are not present in the spleens of newborn to 2-week-old mice. Studies of B lymphocytes derived from the spleens of adult mice indicated that the cells that bear the Mls coded LADs have a high density of surface Ig and possess the complement receptor.

Notes: Whereas the gibberellin and inhibitor levels of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. BP-1) sprouts and stolons differ, their auxin and cytokinin levels apparently remain more or less unchanged. The levels of gibberellin in the sprouts is higher than that of the stolons; however, with regard to inhibitor levels the reverse is true. It would appear as if an internal balance of different hormones controls whether or not tuberization will occur. High gibberellin and low inhibitor levels (sprouts) may favour cell elongation and at the same time limit cell division. Decreased gibberellin and increased inhibitor levels (stolons) seems to favour cell division. As cell division is not retarded despite high inhibitor levels, it would appear as if the effect of the inhibitor is mainly directed at countering the gibberellins.

Notes: The auxin to cytokinin ratios are described for promoting growth in the in vitro cultures of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Bragg) and perennial clover (Trifolium repens L. cv. Regal Ladinc). Callus growth was induced on somatic tissue with 50:1 auxin to cytokinin (w/w) ratio. A 5:1 ratio served for initiation of cell suspensions from callus and for subsequent growth of callus from cells in suspension. A 1:2 ratio served for regeneration of buds and plantlets from the callus grown from cells. Although (2,4-dichlorophenoxy) acetic acid was the auxin for suspension and regenerative cultures, (2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)acetic acid was the more effective auxin for initiation of callus on somatic tissue. All cultures were grown with 6-furfurylaminopurine as the cytokinin. The phytohormones strongly influenced the rates of culture growth, but determination of culture type was augmented by dl-alpha tocopherol acetate and iron. Tocopherol and a relatively high complement of iron promoted growth of juvenile cultures, whereas low level of iron and absence of tocopherol favored growth to comparatively more differentiated cultures. Without tocopherol, no callus formed on somatic tissue during the allotted period of incubation. Tocopherol plus a complement of low iron enabled growth of callus on rapidly growing somatic tissue. A high level of iron enabled comparatively more callus growth but suppressed growth of somatic tissue. In suspension cultures tocopherol and a high iron level enhanced dispersion of cells. A low iron complement in the absence of tocopherol induced growth of callus from cells and subsequent regeneration of buds and plantlets from the callus.

Notes: Abstract In an effort to detect occult metastases in women with “early” breast cancer and no evidence of metastatic disease by conventional criteria, 50 women with “early” breast cancer were subjected to a battery of tests that included skeletal scintiscanning, liver scintiscanning, and measurements of urinary hydroxyproline, serum alkaline phosphatase of bone origin, serum alkaline phosphatase of liver origin and serum gamma glutamyl transpeptidase. One or more abnormalities suggestive of occult metastatic disease in the skeleton and/or the liver were found in 44% of patients. There was no correlation between positive test results and the finding of positive pectoral lymph nodes (found in 42% of patients). Short-term follow-up suggests a correlation between positive test results and development of recurrent disease. It appears that the performance of these tests preoperatively and the histological evaluation of pectoral and axillary lymph nodes are complementary approaches to the staging of breast cancer.

Notes: [Auszug] 3U 0833 - 45 is believed to be associated with the pulsar PSR 0833-45 (ref. 2) itself probably a remanent of the Vela SN explosion3. Pulsed emission at both hard4 and soft5 X-ray energies have been claimed for this pulsar, although, as yet, efforts to confirm these results have proved ...
