Notes: Summary Eleven patients with dural carotid-cavernous sinus fistulae were studied with selective magnification angiography. The angiographic features of this condition were analyzed in detail. The arterial plexus normally present in and around the cavernous sinus has been thought to rupture into the sinus and establish an arteriovenous fistula with an extensive dural arterial supply. Changeable angiographic and clinical findings, including spontaneous regression, can be explained on the basis of thrombosis and occlusion in the arterial network. The indications for and methods of embolization are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The regulatory protein CRP (or CAP) fromE. coli is shown to display two distinct patterns of binding interactions with DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. The free core enzyme, and both the core and the holo polymerase when bound to single-stranded DNA, can bind CRP in a cAMP-independent association reaction. Instead, the binding of CRP to free holoenzyme and to holo or core polymerase bound to native DNA was undetectable in the absence of cAMP. The specific ligand of CRP (cAMP) strengthens distinctively this class of interactions. In no case could any release of σ-factor be demonstrated. Estimates of the dissociation constants were obtained for the various binding reactions which were investigated under quasi-physiological ionic conditions. These, together with the known values of thein vivo concentrations of CRP and RNA polymerase, suggest that the interactions described may have a functional significance.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Twenty-four patients with maxillary squamous cell carcinoma were treated with 50 μg of phytohemagglutinin (PHA), saturated into pieces of gelatin sponge, and applied to the maxillary sinus which was in advance surgically exposed via the peroral route. Treatment was combined with cobalt 60 irradiation at 4,000 rads (200 rads×20 doses over a one month period) and concurrent arterial infusion of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) with a total dosage of 5,000 mg (250 mg× 20 doses). After 20 treatments with phytohemagglutinin, gross examination showed that tumors were no longer apparent in 83.3% of the cases treated with PHA vs. 52.6% in the control group without PHA. On histological examination, 66.6% in the PHA group showed no signs of tumors vs. 15.8% in the control group. Microscopically, the disappearance of the tumors was frequently observed in tumor of T2 more than that of T3 in extent of primary tumor. No side effects were observed nor was there a significant difference between the control group and the PHA group in the 3-year crude survival rate (control group: 68.4%; PHA group: 62.5%)

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we prove some theorems on fuzzy sets. We first show that, in order to demonstrate that the equality of shadows ofA andB implies the equality ofA andB, it is necessary to assume thatA andB are closed and thatS H (A)=S H (B) for any closed hyperplane hyperplaneH. We also obtain a separation theorem for two convex fuzzy sets in a Hilbert space. Finally, we investigate results relating to minimax theorems for fuzzy sets. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for compactness.
