Notes: Plasma total cholesterol, triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were determined in 70 pregnant women immediately after delivery and in the cord blood of their babies; 62 non-pregnant women served as controls. The mean lipid levels were significantly higher in the pregnant women than in the non-pregnant women. The lipid levels in the cord blood were much lower than those in the maternal blood but were not different from values which have been reported from the developed countries; they were independent of socio-economic class. The total and high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were related to socio-economic status both in the pregnant and non-pregnant women, but the ratio of high density lipoprotein cholesterol to total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were not. The cord blood lipid levels were also independent of socio-economic class.

Notes: Twenty-one carotid endarterectomies were performed on 18 patients anaesthetised using droperidol, fentanyl and a cervical plexus block. This technique permitted testing for motor function during carotid clamping, and allowed the operation to proceed safely without a shunt in the majority of patients.

Notes: Abstract Slow-reacting substances are formed from arachidonic acid by the action of a lipoxygenase, which leads to the formation of 5-hydroperoxy,6,8,11,14 eicosatetraenoic acid. The covalent structures of SRS-A from guinea-pig lung and SRS from RBL-1 cells have been determined by protein chemical analysis and electron impact mass spectrometry of a derivative of the intact molecules. The structures of SRS-A and SRS are identical, being 5-hydroxy-6-cysteinyl-glycinyl-7,9,11,14-eicosatetraenoic acid. SRSs may be formed by a combination of the metabolism of arachidonic acid by the lipoxygenase pathway and the glutathione detoxification pathway involving nucleophilic attack on 5,6-oxidoeicosatetraenoic acid.

Notes: Summary Well defined non-aqueous dispersions of poly(methyl methacrylate) stabilized by AB block copolymers of polystyrene and poly(dimethyl siloxane) were prepared with a dispersion medium consisting of a binary mixture of n-heptane and ethanol. Flocculation was induced by cooling, and the lower critical flocculation temperature was studied as a function of the molecular weight and composition of the stabilizing copolymer, the particle size of the dispersion, and the surface coverage of the particles. The theta temperature for poly(dimethyl siloxane) homopolymer in the same binary liquid mixture was determined by two procedures. The lower critical flocculation temperature was found to be close to the theta temperature and was independent of the length of the stabilizing poly(dimethyl siloxane) chains for the molecular weight range 3200-48000.

Notes: Relative rates of polymer removal in an oxygen plasma have been measured for 40 polymer samples. The rates of removal are correlated, with structural factors which enhance or retard removal. Strong backbone bonds, aromatic and polar functional groups, and metallic atoms decrease the removal rates. Weak bonds not attached to the- polymer backbone have little affect while weak bonds attached directly to the chain or in the chain greatly accelerate removal. Chlorine present in the polymer catalyzes removal. This can be mimicked by mixtures of CF4, and O2 for which much enhanced removal rates are observed.
