Notes: Three experiments were conducted to test a two-factor model of the determinants of attributional modesty in women. Women tended to make modest attributions for success when they were concerned about how others would evaluate them and when they were concerned about their own self-image. Specifically, the knowledge that one's attributions would be public and the anticipation of future performance on similar tasks led to modesty. Self-derogatory attributions for failure occurred when the subjects thought their attributions would be public.

Notes: A laboratory experiment and a reanalysis of data collected in a previous field study examined the effects of cooperation and competition on liking for other group members who varied in competence. It was hypothesized that when other members of a cooperative group are relatively incompetent, they will tend to be disliked because they decrease the subject's chances of success. On the other hand, in competitive groups incompetent group members should not be disliked because they do not reduce the probability of the subject's success. Both the laboratory experiment and the field study found support for these suggestions. In addition, in the field study it was found that the race of the other group members did not affect these tendencies. Other results from the present study yielded information concerning some of the psychological processes that determine attraction in cooperative and competitive groups. These results were discussed in terms of their implications for the use of cooperative groups in desegregated schools.

Notes: This study examines attributions of blame to the Nazis and the Jews for the events of the holocaust. The sample consisted of Germans and Americans who had viewed the television series “Holocaust” and comparison groups who had not seen the program. It was found that among viewers who identified with the Nazis, attributions of blame to the Jews were higher than among nonviewers or viewers who identified with the Jews. Attributions of blame to the Nazis did not vary as a function of viewing the television series. However, people who identified with the Nazis blamed the Nazis less for the holocaust than people who identified with the Jews. These results are discussed in terms of the justworld hypothesis (Lerner & Miller, 1978) and their implications for media presentations on the victims of oppression.

Notes: A technique has been developed for correcting slowly varying small-angle X-ray scattering curves for the distortions produced by the length of the collimating slits when, as is very often true, slit-width effects are negligible. The method, which is useful with measured scattering curves which decay so slowly with increasing scattering angle that the usual correction procedures do not converge, is based on approximating the measured curve by a polynominal in h2, where h = 4πλ−1 sin θ; 2θ is the scattering angle and λ is the X-ray wavelength. The order j of the polynomial is selected to give the best fit to the measured curve over the entire interval of angles for which data are available. The corrected curve is also a polynomial in h2 of order j, and the coefficients of this polynomial can be easily evaluated. Tests of the method on a theoretical scattering curve and two experimental curves are described.

Notes: Abstract Nitrogenase activity in Rhodopseudomonas palustris is subject to a rapid switch-off in response to exogenous ammonia. When cells were grown on limiting nitrogen and eventually became nitrogen deficient, nitrogenase synthesis was fully derepressed but the enzyme was insensitive to ammonia. The transformation of ammonia-sensitive to ammonia-insensitive cells was a slow, but fully reversible process. The switch-off effect in ammonia-sensitive cells paralleled changes in the adenylylation state of glutamine synthetase. Ammonia-insensitive cells, however, showed similar changes in glutamine synthetase activity although nitrogenase activity was unaffected. We conclude that nitrogenase regulation and adenylylation of glutamine synthetase are independent processes, at least under conditions of nitrogen deficiency.

Notes: Summary We estimated the density of subterranean termites Gnathamitermes tubiformans at 800,000 · ha-1 for a standing crop biomass of 2 kg · ha-1 Predation losses were estimated to be 5,73 kg · ha-1 · yr-1 representing the major release of nutrients from termites to surficial soil layers. Nutrient fluxes from termites to predators amounted to 410g N·ha-1·yr-1, 33 g S · ha-1 · yr-1 and 19 g P · ha-1 · yr-1. These fluxes account for 8% of the litter N, 1.5% of the litter P and 2.9% of the litter S. The termites fixed an estimated 66 g · ha-1 · yr-1 atmospheric N and returned an estimated 100 g · ha-1 · yr-1 in the surface gallery carton. Since losses of elements from subterannean termites were greater than standing crops, we estimated an annual turnover of N at 3.5 times per year, P of 2.5 times per year, and S of 2.5 per times per year. Since surface foraging, predation and alate flights are pulse regulated by rainfall, nutrient flows through subterranean termites are episodic and releases of nutrients accumulated in termite biomass preceeds or is coincident with productivity “pulses” of some shallow rooted plants. We propose that subterranean termites are important as regulators in desert nutrient cycles.

Notes: Summary The pathogenesis of septic shock was investigated. Vasoactive prostanoids, prostaglandin F2α(PGF2α), prostacyclin (PGI2), and thromboxane (TX) were measured by radioimmunoassay in mixed venous and arterial plasma during a clinically defined early phase, and attributed to essential hemodynamic and pulmonary parameters. Data show that irrespective of the actual PGF2α activity, high TX/PGI2 ratios parallel high pulmonary vascular resistance, and bad pulmonary function, whereas a predominance of PGI2 activity correlates with significantly better pulmonary and peripheral parameters.
