Notes: The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of bite force changes on the duration and latency of the menton tap silent period and particularly whether a decrease in bite force can increase the duration of the silent period to the extent which may be found in dysfunctional patients. The menton tap silent period was recorded from both anterior temporal and masseter muscles while the subject was clenching at different force levels. A bilaterally stable force transducer was used to monitor the clenching force. The results indicated no statistically significant differences in the mean durations and latencies of silent periods at different clenching forces. They suggest that duration and latency are not related to the degree of clenching force.

Notes: [Auszug] BIRCH ALL ET AL.1 are to be congratulated on the improvements made in the flexural strength of cement, however, we question their scientific explanation which is given in terms of the removal of large size pores 5:100 ixm; it is postulated that these pores are simple strength controlling Griffith ...

Notes: Abstract In a double-blind study the therapeutic efficacy of sulpiride was compared to that of haloperidol — an established neuroleptic agent. A total of 30 female patients with a diagnosis of chronic schizophrenia were initially stabilised on the dosage of haloperidol which produced optimum therapeutic response when given once or twice daily. The patients were then randomly allocated to receive either sulpiride or haloperidol over a period of 12 weeks. Plasma drug concentrations and prolactin levels were determined. Clinical effects were evaluated by Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), Wing Rating Scale, and Extrapyramidal Symptoms Rating Scale (EPS). A standardised side-effects checklist was used. Treatment with sulpiride was associated with a significant rise in plasma prolactin level, but paradoxically these patients had significantly reduced extrapyramidal symptoms. No significant correlation was found between plasma sulpiride concentration and prolactin level or any of the clinical variables. The study confirms the antipsychotic activity of sulpiride.

Notes: Abstract The mechanism of transverse-ply failure in cross-ply laminates of glass fibre thermoset composites has been investigated. It is shown that fibre debonding initiates failure, the debonds subsequently joining up to form a transverse crack nucleus. In the epoxy system investigated fibre debonding causes an observable whitening effect and small modulus change; this effect is reversible in that rebonding can be brought about by further heat treatment. It is shown that in the case of the polyester system the larger thermal strains introduced during the curing cycle cause debonding of the composite and therefore the whitening effects are not observed on application of load. Simple models for the prediction of the observed effect of glass fibre volume fraction on transverse failure strain are proposed.

Notes: Calculations of the distribution of states in cell populations grown in well-mixed, isothermal batch and continuous flow reactors are presented. By restricting the analysis to a class of bacteria for which cell division control may be modeled using overlapping timers, analytical results are obtained for many cell population characteristics in terms of the growth rate history. This required growth rate trajectory is evaluated using a separate overall reactor model. The simulation results conform qualitatively to available experimental data and suggest new experiments for further testing of the single-cell model.

Notes: A fundamental problem in microbial reactor analysis is identification of the relationship between environment and individual cell metabolic activity. Population balance equations provide a link between experimental measurements of composition frequency functions in microbial populations on the one hand and macromolecular synthesis kinetics and cell division control parameters for single cells on the other. Flow microfluorometry measurements of frequency functions for single-cell protein content in Schizosaccharomyces pombe in balanced exponential growth have been analyzed by two different methods. One approach utilizes the integrated form of the population balance equation known as the Collins-Richmond equation, and the other method involves optimization of parameters in assumed kinetic and cell division functional forms in order to best fit measured frequency functions with corresponding model solutions. Both data interpretation techniques indicate that rates of protein synthesis increase most in small protein content cells as the population specific growth rate increases, leading to parabolic single-cell protein synthesis kinetics at large specific growth rates. Utilization of frequency function data for an asynchronous population is shown in this case to be a far more sensitive method for determination of single-cell kinetics than is monitoring the metabolic dynamics of a single cell or, equivalently, synchronous culture analyses.
