Notes: As a part of an ongoing larger study concerned with nurse manpower planning, an attempt has been made to investigate the reasons for the non-participation in the labour force of such a large proportion of qualified nurses. In an attempt to collect information on this topic a questionnaire was developed and distributed to a sample of nurses. The article describes in some detail the two different ways in which the names and addresses of the sample were generated. The first method involved making contact by the simple expedient of dropping leaflets through letterboxes while the second involved tracing respondents through their last known address when they originally qualified. The success of these two approaches is contrasted which should be of value to anyone contemplating a similar name-capturing exercise. A total of 2325 questionnaires were returned and computer analysed. This article presents the results of one part of that analysis i.e. the factor analysis conducted on the attitudinal questions contained in the document. A five-factor solution yielded highly interpretable results and the factor loadings are presented along with the pattern of responses. The factor scores are then contrasted for three different groups of respondents: the grouping being based on whether the respondent was working full-time, part-time or not at all.

Notes: Summary The females ofDrosophila bipectinata andD. malerkotliana are able to discriminate between their own and alien males in the absence of antennae. Thus mate recognition seems to depend on contact chemoreceptors in these 2 species.

Notes: Summary In order to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships betweenD. takahashii andD. pseudotakahashii, 2 closely related allopatric species, sexual isolation was studied by the male-choice method. The present data indicate that there is a one-sided mating preference between these species. On a basis of the results, their evolutionary sequence is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Heterochromatin distribution in metaphase chromosomes of three morphologically and karyologically similar members of Drosophila, D. s.sulfurigaster, D. s.bilimbata and D. pallidifrons was studied by the Hoechst 33258 staining method. Comparison showed remarkable uniformity of H-heterochromatin among the three members except for in their Y-chromosomes. On the basis of these observations phylogenetic relationships are discussed.

Notes: Summary The DTPA-extractable Zn in 23 calcareous soils ranged from 0.34 to 3.42 ppm and the total Zn in rice leaves of control pots ranged from 15 to 50 ppm. The soil available Zn was negatively correlated with pH (r=−0.41*) and positively correlated with organic carbon (r=0.71**)_and rice tissue Zn concentration (r=0.98**). The Bray's per cent yield ranged from 29.12 to 126.36 and was positively correlated with available Zn (r=0.93**) and plant tissue Zn (r=0.91**). The critical Zn concentration in soil and plant below which plant response to Zn application to the soil may be expected, was 0.78 and 19 ppm respectively. In all the soils testing below 0.78 ppm Zn plants responded to Zn application and the per cent mean response at 5 and 10 ppm added Zn levels was 101.21 and 111.38 respectively. A negative response to applied Zn was recorded in soils of the high Zn group where the per cent mean response at 5 and 10 ppm added Zn was −14.90 and −33.78 respectively.

Notes: Abstract Strains of Drosophila ananassae, each descended from a single inseminated female collected in nature, were maintained in laboratory cultures for 10 to nearly 50 generations. The chromosomal analysis of these strains was made immediately after their capture and chromosomal inversions were detected. The same strains were re-examined and it was found that all the strains remained polymorphic during the course of time. Although some of the strains did not show the same chromosomes which were ascertained at the original examination, they failed to become homozygous in all the chromosomes. Some old strains maintained for more than 100 generations but not established by the author were also examined and showed a persistence of inversion polymorphism. The strains were maintained by transferring between 20 and 40 flies to fresh food bottles in each generation and with this breeding system the strains should have become homozygous with respect to most of the unfixed genetic variants which they contained originally. But the strains remained chromosomally polymorphic, which shows that the inversion heterozygotes exhibit heterosis.

Notes: Abstract Oxygen uptake in relation to body size during the early life of the fish Channa punctatus shows a significant two-component curve: one related to the fully aquatic phase and the other to the bimodal phase of respiration. The onset of the air-breathing habit around the 18–20th day after hatching brings about a 45% drop in O2 uptake through the gill/skin in water.

Notes: Abstract We consider the problem of determining the stress intensity factors and crack energy in an infinitely long isotropic, homogeneous elastic strip containing three coplanar Griffith cracks. The three coplanar Griffith cracks are situated symmetrically on a line perpendicular to the edges of the strip. We assume that the cracks are opened by an internal pressure and the edges of the strip are fixed. By using the theory of Fourier series we reduce the problem to solving a set of quadruple trigonometrical series equations with a cosine kernel. Closed form solution is obtained for the quadruple series equations. Closed form analytical expressions are derived for the stress intensity factors, the shape of the deformed cracks and the crack energy. Solutions to some particular problems are derived as limiting cases.
