    Notizen: Extruded films and injection molded bars of a copolyester based on 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol condensed with a mixture of isophthalic and terephthalic acids, of a bisphenol-A based polycarbonate, PC, and of the miscible blends of these compounds were exposed to boiling water for up to 15 days. The ductility and strengths of film specimens rich in PC were found to degrade as a result of PC hydrolysis. These properties of specimens rich in copolyester were found to decline as a result of crystallization of the copolyester. Best overall performance was obtained for 50/50 blends of PC and copolyester. All amorphous materials showed a transition from ductile to brittle behavior at the same weight average molecular weight as previously observed for pure PC. This feature plus the observation that PC hydrolyzes in the blend at the same rate as it does in the pure state allows most of the superior performance of the 50/50 blends to be explained in terms of blend molecular weight.

    Notizen: A copolymer formed from 30 percent acrylonitrile and 70 percent α methyl styrene by weight, or αMSAN, has been examined for miscibility in blends with various polyacrylates and polymethacrylates. None of the polyacrylates or poly(vinyl acetate) were miscible with α-MSAN at room temperature or above. The methyl and ethyl esters of the polymethacrylate series (PMMA, PEMA) proved to be miscible with α MSAN, but none of the higher homologues were miscible under these conditions. Blends of both PMMA and PEMA with α MSAN exhibited lower critical solution temperatures. The observed cloud points decreased as PMMA molecular weight increased up to 105 where kinetic effects caused an apparent reversal of this trend. Atactic PMMA interacts more strongly with αMSAN than does either isotactic PMMA or atactic PEMA. These structural effects are compared with similar trends found in other systems.

    Notizen: Blends of the polyhydroxy ether of bisphenol-A, Phenoxy, with the polyesters poly(1,4-butylene adipate), poly(ethylene adipate), poly(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propylene succinate), poly(2,2-dimethyl-1, 3-propylene adipate), poly(1,4-cyclohexane-dimethanol succinate), and poly(∊-caprolactone), are found to exhibit the single, composition-dependent glass transition temperatures characteristic of miscible systems. Phenoxy blends containing poly(ethylene succinate), poly(hexamethylene succinate), or poly(pivaloactone) were found to be immiscible. Blend interaction parameters, obtained from analysis of the melting-point depressions observed for miscible blends containing crystallizable polyester components, are found to vary with polyester chemical structure so as to suggest an optimum density of ester groups in the polyester chain for achieving maximum interaction with Phenoxy. Too many or too few ester groups lead to immiscible polyester-Phenoxy blends.

    Notizen: The mechanical properties of binary blends of high-density polyethylene and polypropylene are quite good compared to those for blends of some other immiscible pairs. The property relationships observed depend strongly on the process used to fabricate the blends as shown by comparisons of specimens made by injection and compression molding with widely varied cooling rates in the latter. Strength and modulus may show additive behavior or have positive or negative deviations, depending on the process conditions; however, measures of ductility like impact strength or elongation at break always show negative departures from additivity and exhibit minima in some cases. Addition of an appropriate ethylene-propylene elastomer greatly improves the ductility of these blends but with a corresponding decrease in strength and modulus. The presence of weld lines has a serious detrimental effect on mechanical properties of these blends.

    Notizen: The sorption and transport of several gases in poly(phenylene oxide) were measured at 35°C, and the results have been analyzed in terms of the dual sorption/mobility models which have been successfully employed for this purpose for other glassy polymers. Both the extent of sorption and rate of permeation of gases are quite large for poly(phenylene oxide) compared to other glassy polymers with rigid chain backbones. It is shown that the high extent of sorption is owing to the high glass transition temperature of this polymer, but this is not a significant factor in its high permeability to gases. The latter stems from large diffusion coefficients. It is shown that the capacity of the Langmuir mode of sorption inherent to glassy polymers is related to the value of the glass transition temperature in a general way for a wide variety of polymers. Observations about the diffusion coefficients for numerous gas-polymer pairs are discussed.

    Notizen: The melting and crystallization behavior of Kodar, a copolyester formed from 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol and a mixture of terephthalic and isophthalic acids, and its miscible blends with polycarbonate was examined. The results of the melting behavior are discussed in terms of crystallization-induced chemical rearrangements and the copolymeric character of Kodar and interchange reactions between components when polycarbonate is present in the blend. For various reasons, the melting behavior cannot be extrapolated to infinite crystal size using the Hoffman-Weeks approach. Crystallization kinetics follows the Avrami equation, with rates being higher when the crystallization temperatuare is approached from the glass rather than from the melt. The kinetic data are discussed in terms of modern theories. An approximate melting point depression analysis is used to estimate the interaction parameter for the blend, and the result obtained is compared to a value from another technique.

    Notizen: Sorption and transport measurements for various gases were made with a copolyester formed from 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol and a mixture of terephthalic and isophthalic acids. Similar observations for the miscible blends of this copolyester with polycarbonate were made using carbon dioxide. All of these results are described well by dual sorption-dual mobility models which have been used effectively for other gas-glassy polymer systems. The sorption and transport parameters deduced experimentally from these systems have been correlated and interpreted in terms of applicable theories. For the blends, the Henry's-law sorption parameter has been used to deduce a reasonable value of the interaction parameter for the polycarbonate-copolyester blend system from the Flory-Huggins theory of mixtures. The Langmuir capacity term from the dual-sorption model is accurately related to the unrelaxed volume of the glass. Negative deviations of permeability and diffusion coefficients from simple additivity relations were observed and qualitatively interpreted to result from the decrease in volume on mixing for the blends.
