Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine Störungsanalyse wird für periodische Wärmeübertragung in Strahlungsrippen gleicher Dicke vorgelegt.
Notes: Abstract A perturbation analysis is presented for periodic heat transfer in radiating fins of uniform thickness. The base temperature is assumed to oscillate around a mean value. The perturbation expansion is carried out in terms of dimensionless amplitude ɛ of the base temperature oscillation. The zero-order problem which is nonlinear, and corresponds to the steady state fin behaviour, is solved by quasilinearization. A method of complex combination is used to reduce both the first and the second order problems to two, coupled linear boundary value problems which are subsequently solved by a noniterative numerical scheme. The second-order term is composed of an oscillatory component with twice the frequency of base temperature oscillation and a time-independent term which causes a net change in the steady state values of temperature and heat transfer rate. Within the range of parameters used, the net effect is to decrease the mean temperature and increase the mean heat transfer rate. This is in constrast to the linear case of convecting fins where the mean values are unaffected by base temperature oscillations. Detailed numerical results are presented illustrating the effects of fin parameter N and dimensionless frequency B on temperature distribution, heat transfer rate, and time-average fin efficiency. The time-average fin efficiency is found to reduce significantly at low N and high B.

Notes: Abstract The method of extended perturbation series is applied to solve for laminar natural convection from an isothermal, thin vertical cylinder. The series in terms of the transverse curvature parameterξ extended to five terms and is subsequently improved by applying the Shanks transformation twice. The validity of the solution is extended up toξ=10 and possibly even beyond. Up toξ=10, the results for wall shear as well as the local and average Nusselt numbers agree very closely with those of local nonsimilarity and finite difference solutions. The ease of computation coupled with high accuracy makes the present approach far more attractive than the currently popular local nonsimilarity and finite difference methods. Its success with the present problem should motivate applications to a host of nonsimilar boundary layer flows.

Notes: Abstract The non self-similar boundary value problem of ground water movement due to arbitrary changes in water level is solved. The non self-similar solutions are generated from known similarity solutions using numerical methods.

Notes: High precision 14N screening measurements are presented for some nitroalkanes. The screening increases as the dielectric constant of the solvent decreases in all cases considered. The β effect on the nitrogen screening is found to be largely independent of solvent, and is thus an intrinsic property of the nitroalkanes. Good agreement is obtained between the observed solvent effects on nitrogen screening and those calculated by the SOS procedure using INDO/S parameters. It is concluded that the measured nitrogen screening changes monitor the electronic changes which occur in the nitroalkanes as the medium is changed.
