Abstract Uranium adsorbed in a precultured mycelial biomass was 94 to 99% extracted by alkali carbonates, up to 61 % by EDTA, but only 0 to 3 % by aqueous ammonia or organic acids. A maximum load of ca 11500 ppm U, as analysed by delayed neutron, was obtained after chemical treatments. The capacity for U uptake was generally increased by alcohol treatments, boiling or the extraction process itself. The potential utility of fungal biosorbents in metal recovery is based on capacity, extractability, reuse and low production cost.
