Notizen: Abstract Twelve poor sleepers of mean age 52 years performed 2 h of laboratory tests three times on 1 day during each week of nightly intake of loprazolam 0.5 mg, loprazolam 1 mg, triazolam 0.5 mg, or continued placebos. Only in the mornings did loprazolam 1 mg cause impairment in manual dexterity and card-sorting, and triazolam 0.5 mg in manual dexterity. Using difference from baseline, withdrawal of either drug after 3 weeks was associated with poorer subjective quality of sleep than following continuing placebos. The rate of spontaneous complaints (including accidents) associated with the drugs was as informative as formal testing.

Notizen: Summary Mexican lime seedlings were inoculated with 0, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 microconidia ofFusarium oxysporum f. sp.citri per gram of potting media. The percent infection and mean disease severity rating increased with increasing inoculum density of the pathogen. In potting mix infested withAspergillus ochraceus, Penicillium funiculosum andTrichoderma harzianum at 5000 conidia per gram 2 weeks prior to infestation withF. oxysporum f. sp.citri at 0, 1000, 4000, and 8000 microconidia per gram,A. ochraceus reduced,P. funiculosum increased andT. harzianum had no effect on disease severity or pathogen population. OnlyP. funiculosum showed antagonistic activityin vitro against the pathogen. Disease severity and pathogen propagule densitites were greater and pH was lower in potting media fertilized with NH4−N than in media fertilized with NO3−N.

Notizen: Summary Segregation ratios of allozymes in haploid female gametophytes obtained from viable seed were studied in a natural population of jack pine, Pinus banksiana. Stability of these ratios was assessed for three levels of the sexually reproductive crown as well as for four years of natural fertilization. Analyses of observed segregation ratios of four of five polymorphic isozyme loci showed good correspondence to the overall 1∶1 ratios expected for simple Mendelian inheritance. Allozymes of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase did not segregate in the expected 1∶1 ratio. In addition, there were significant deviations from the expected segregation ratio for all the loci at some sampling positions on individual trees. Heterogeneity of segregation among trees, strata and years could be the result of pollen pool heterogeneity, segregation distortion and/or recessive lethal and semi-lethal gene combinations resulting in early embryo abortion. These types of segregation deviations in viable seed can affect the estimation of allele frequencies from bulked samples of a small number of individuals, the inference of heterozygosity/homozygosity of parental trees, and estimates of selfing rates.

Notizen: This note discusses the numerical solution of the kinematic wave equation under those conditions when the solution contains a discontinuous shock. A finite element solution is described in which shocks are represented by discrete nodal discontinuities. The implementation of the method follows conventional finite element practice over the shockless regions of the solution domain which are coupled by frontal constraints. The basis of the method and examples of its application to the solution of the kinematic wave equation in one and two dimensions are presented.

Notizen: The difficulties experienced in the treatment of hyperbolic systems of equations by the finite element method (or other) spatial discretization procedures are well known. In this paper a temporal discretization precedes the spatial one which in principle is considered along the characteristics to achieve a self adjoint form. By a suitable expansion, the original co-ordinates are preserved and combined with the use of a standard Galerkin process to achieve an accurate discretization. It is shown that the process is equivalent to the Taylor-Galerkin methods of Donea.17Several examples illustrate the accuracy and efficiency attainable in such problems as transport, shallow water equations, transonic flow etc.
