Conclusions 1. In laser treatment with fusion the type of the original structure has an insignificant influence on the structure and properties of the zone of laser action. In the zone of fusion a structure of lamellar twinned martensite with a high microhardness is formed but the use of such a method is complicated by significant embrittlement of the steel and the probability of crack formation. 2. The original structure of the steel exerts a significant influence on the formation of the structure and properties of ShKh15 steel in laser treatment without fusion. In the zone of laser action with an original coarse structure of ShKh15 steel during laser hardening without fusion the formation of a structure of low-carbon martensite and residual austenite characterized by low hardness is possible. For laser hardening it is desirable to use a steel with an original finely dispersed structure.
