Notizen: The Dingle Group, a continental Upper Silurian redbed succession in SW Ireland, has yielded a multicomponent palaeomagnetic record. The oldest magnetization retrieved, the B component, with in situ mean direction of D/I= 191/+9; K= 40; α95= 3.6°; N= 41, post-dates the local late Silurian-mid-Devonian (Acadian) tectonic deformation and is in very good agreement with the prevailing remanences in other Caledonian rocks of western Ireland. An overprinted ‘A’ component with in situ mean direction D/I= 194/-16; K= 53; α95= 3.1°; N= 41, is about as prevalent as the B component and was probably acquired in late Palaeozoic (Kiaman) times. By comparison with other published data, including a positive fold test for corresponding magnetization of Upper Silurian redbeds in Clare Island, it is concluded that the flat-lying B field (relative to Britain and Ireland) was in existence at least from the late Silurian to late Middle Carboniferous, i.e. covering a minimum time span of 100 M. yr.

Notizen: Abstract An approximate equation governing the turbulent fluid velocity encountered along discrete particle path is used to derive the fluid/particle turbulent moments required for dispersed two-phase flows modelling. Then, closure model predictions are compared with results obtained from large-eddy simulation of particle fluctuating motion in forced isotropic fluid turbulence.

Notizen: Abstract Radiation synovectomy is a potential weapon in the therapeutic armamentarium of nuclear medicine. It is an attractive alternative to surgical or chemical synovectomy for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. In this article the clinical results obtained with radiation synovectomy from the 1950s through 1992 are summarized and reviewed. Even after taking into account the paucity of well-controlled trials and rigorous clinical follow-up, it is clear that radiation synovectomy is efficacious in controlling the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. However, the procedure is not widely used because of concerns about leakage of radioactivity from the treated joint, and the resulting high doses that can be delivered to nontarget organs. New approaches to the preparation of radiolabeled particles for use in radiation synovectomy promise to minimize this leakage and thus allow the full potential of this important radiotherapy to be realized.
