Notes: In order to facilitate studies on oral mucosa a simplified method for the culture of oral epithelial cells from adult hamsters was developed. Cheek pouches were excised and epithelial cells isolated by collagenase digestion. These were grown in CM-V medium containing spermine in order to inhibit overgrowth of the epithelial cells by fibroblasts. The epithelial cells were subcultured by routine tissue culture procedures. The cells isolated were examined by light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Morphologically the cells were typical of epithelial cells. Ultrastructural examination showed structures typical of epithelia including filaments, keratohyalin granules and desmosomal junctions. The culture system provides epithelial cells that can be used for a variety of biochemical and morphological studies.

Notes: Summary The relative viabilities of homozygous and heterozygous karyotypes were measured by making crosses between strains ofD. ananassae homozygous for ST or inverted gene orders in the second and third chromosomes. The strains utilized during the present study originated from widely separated localities in India, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabaru, Malaysia and Chian Mai, Thailand. The presence of heterosis in many interpopulation crosses is evident from the results which show that the inversion heterozygotes formed by chromosomes coming from distant populations exhibit heterosis. On the other hand, heterosis is absent in two intrapopulation crosses. Thus the present results provide evidence that heterozygosis for many genes and gene complexes does produce high fitness without previous selectional coadaptation.

Notes: Summary The hypoxic cytotoxic effect of chlorpromazine towardsE. coli B/r was observed to be dependent on temperature of incubation and irradiation. Increasing the temperature of incubation from ambient to 37° C followed by irradiation revealed that the organisms showed radiosensitivity of a magnitude which was two to three times the oxygen effect. The possible mechanisms of this effect are discussed.

Notes: Summary Studies were conducted to evaluate the uptake of mercury by wheat (Triticum aestivum L. runar) and beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. marshal) growth on an oxisol with different levels of 2-methoxyethylmercury chloride (Aretan) and mercuric chloride. Dry matter and grain yields of wheat were little affected by either Aretan or mercuric chloride, although Aretan at 50 mg Hg/kg soil delayed germination by four to five days. Germination of beans grown with both compounds at the 50 mg Hg/kg soil failed completely, even after repeated sowing. Yields were somewhat, though not significantly, decreased by mercury chloride up to 5 mg Hg/kg soil. The concentration of Hg in wheat straw and grain increased significantly with increased levels of Aretan and HgCl2 application, with more Hg taken up by the plants grown with HgCl2 than with those grown with Aretan. Translocation of Hg to grain was greater in the plants grown with HgCl2. The concentration of Hg in bean straw, but not grain, increased significantly with increasing levels of Aretan and HgCl2 application, and was greater in plants grown with HgCl2. Translocation to grain was low, with little difference between plants grown with Aretan or HgCl2.

Notes: Summary Studies revealed that Zn-deficiency symptoms were induced markedly by the levels of nitrogen and its source in rainfed lowland rice grown on calcareous soil. Visual Zn-deficiency symptoms recorded 3 weeks after transplanting showed that increased supply of nitrogen at puddling resulted in significant increase in the extent of deficiency symptoms of this nutrient element. Zn-deficiency symptoms got aggravated with Mussorrie Rock Phos-coated urea (MRPCU) followed by sulphur-coated urea (SCU). Zn-deficiency symptoms induced by urea supergranules (USG) and prilled urea (PU) supplying two-thirds of nitrogen as basal were found to be of moderate level. No symptoms of Zn-deficiency were noted with no-nitrogen control.

Notes: Abstract This paper examines the problem related to the axisymmetric loading of an annular adhesive contact region between two identical isotropic elastic halfspaces. The paper focusses on the evaluation of the stress intensity factors at the boundaries of the annular adhesive region. These stress intensity factors are evaluated in the form of power series in terms of a non-dimensional parameter which represents the ratio of the radii of the annular region.

Notes: Summary The width of a thin plastic annular zone formed during the deformation of a pennyshaped crack in a transversely isotropic layer of an ideal elasto-plastic material is determined. Considered are the cases where the penny-shaped crack is extended by normal stresses and by torsional stresses. The faces of the layer are shear free and deformation of the plastic zone around the penny-shaped crack occurs according to the Dugdale hypothesis. For each case, the solution of the problem is reduced to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Iterative solutions are obtained for small values of the parameters and numerical results for the width of the plastic zone are determined. Graphical results showing the effect of transverse isotropy upon the width of the plastic zone are also presented.
