Notizen: Gallium phosphide films are successfully grown on (100) Si substrates by a new hydride vapor phase epitaxy. Mixing of reactant vapors just above the substrate makes the growth rate as high as 50 nm/min even in the temperature range of 350–450 °C. This makes the two-step growth procedure applicable for growing a single domain GaP film on Si from H2-HCl-PH3-Ga reactants. An etch pit density of 7.5×106 cm−2 and a full width at half-maximum of 93 arcsec in a double-crystal x-ray rocking curve are achieved. Green light-emitting diodes with 565 nm peak wavelength are successfully fabricated using nitrogen-doped GaP films grown on Si.

Notizen: Lectin binding sites and immunohistochemically detectable fibronectin and carbonic anhydrase II (CA II) were examined in induced bone structure of calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe. Pathological features of ossification were particularly evident in the border zone between tumor epithelium and stroma, and epithelial foci adjacent to sites of bone formation were conspicuously basophilic. The use of lectin binding in these foci coincided with the basophilic epithelial zones: Con A, RCA-1, PNA, SBA, and WGA bound strongly, indicating thepresence of glucose (Glu), mannose (Man), galactose (Gal), N-acetyl-D-galactosamine (GalNAC), and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAC). Fibronectin was also detected in the same epithclial-mesenchymal interacting layers as the positive lectin-binding sites. Staining for CA II was strongly positive in giant cells and in epithelial zones in the bone-inducting areas. The bond induction mechanism in the stromal tissue of calicifying epithelioma of Malherbe may initially involve the action CA II in the epithelial-mesenchymal interacting zone, which then brings about ossification of the matrix which is fibronectin-positive and rich in lectin-binding sites.

Notizen: Abstract Three cases of chronic volvulus of the small bowel in midgut malrotation are presented, all of whom manifested similar angiographic findings: proximal occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery and vein and development of collateral vessels. These findings may indicate the pathophysiology of chronic volvulus in midgut malrotation; the volvulus is progressive and eventually results in the twisting of the mesenteric root itself, but because of its chronic nature collateral circulation develops, eliminating bowel necrosis. Computed tomography (CT), performed in two cases, revealed dilated, tortuous vessels in the mesentery in addition to the known CT finding of a whirl-like pattern of the volvulated small bowel loops. Sonography, performed in one case, showed an unique feature of whirling sonolucent layers probably representing the volvulated small bowel loops intermixed with dilated mesenteric collateral vessels. We would like to emphasize the usefulness of CT and sonography in the early diagnosis of those cases with vague and nonspecific clinical manifestations.

Notizen: Abstract Electrochromic properties of methyl, ethyl, n-hexyl and n-heptyl viologens, and α-, β-, γ-cyclodextrin systems were studied using cyclic voltammetry and absorption spectroscopy. Colourations of red-violet (λ max = 530 or 560 nm), blue (λ max = 600nm) and light purple (λ max = 560 and 600 nm) could be obtained by changing the length of the alkyl chain of viologens or the radius of cyclodextrin. The intermolecular interaction between viologen radicals is weakened when the radicals form inclusion complexes so the blue colour inherent in the monomer of viologen radical appears. The red-violet colour is ascribed to the dimer of the reduced viologen. With the addition of γ-cyclodextrin, viologens were found to be included as dimer. The light purple colour is ascribed to the mixed colour of the monomer and the dimer. Furthermore, since the ratio of monomer and dimer depends upon the concentration of cyclodextrin, any colour between the red-violet of the dimer and the blue of the monomer can be obtained by adjusting the concentration of cyclodextrin. The redox reaction of an inclusion complex was found to depend upon the length of the alkyl viologen and the size of the cavity in cyclodextrin.
