Notes: In 1979, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission began a programme of encouraging the use of automated techniques by its documentary editing projects with a series of small grants for lease/purchase of equipment. In addition to such projects as the Documentary History of the First Federal Congress, the Samuel Gompers Papers, the Papers of Henry Laurens and the Papers of Marcus Garvey, which received funding from these early grants, other Commission-sponsored projects, such as the Papers of General George C. Marshall, initiated automation activities with institutional support or grant funds from other agencies, such as the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Notes: Wittgenstein's genius, John Wisdom has suggested, was uniquely revealed in his ability to formulate such questions as ‘Could one play chess without the queen? Would it still be chess?’ The central questions raised by Richard Rorty's work may be cast in a parallel form: ‘Could one do philosophy without the notion of truth as “correspondence with the Real”? Would it still be philosophy?’ Both pairs of questions, Wittgenstein' and Rorty's, are quintessentially anti-essentialist. The scope and ingenuity of Rorty's ‘philosophy without mirrors’ has challenged philosophers to reconf ront basic questions about the nature and purposes of philosophical inquiry.

Notes: Abstract We studied the effects of inhibition of either prostaglandins or the role of prostanoids and the renin-angiotensin system on renal function in rats with congenital unilateral hydronephrosis. Wistar rats with congenital unilateral hydronephrosis were infused with normal saline (control), captopril dissolved in normal saline or indomethacin dissolved in a solution of sodium chloride and sodium carbonate. In the control group both glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal plasma flow were reduced in the right hydronephrotic kidney (RHK) compared with the normal left kidney. Indomethacin did not improve renal function in the RHK. Captopril significantly improved GFR in the RHK. These results support the conclusion that the renin-angiotensin system is an important mediator of reduced GFR in congenital unilateral hydronephrosis in rats.

Notes: Synopsis Salinity tolerances and plasma osmotic regulatory capacity were determined in individuals of Adinia xenica following laboratory acclimations. Survival of individuals was better than 90% of those entered into the acclimation sequence from an initial acclimation salinity of 17.0 ppt down to fresh-water, and up to 95.0 ppt. Survival of individuals transferred from 95.0 to 105.0 ppt was low. Adinia showed most consistent plasma osmotic regulation in the range of ambient salinities from 17.0 to 60.0 ppt, but responded well over the ambient salinity range from 0.5 ppt to 85.0 ppt. Plasma osmotic concentrations were higher at common ambient salinities, but in a generally similar overall pattern of response, compared with such euryhaline cyprinodontids as Cyprinodon variegatus and Fundulus kansae.

Notes: Abstract Applications of electromyographic and endoscopic manometric techniques in experimental and clinical studies have enhanced our knowledge of the normal physiology and motility disturbances of the sphincter of Oddi. The sphincter of Oddi has an active role in coordinating the time and rate of secretion of biliopancreatic juice into the duodenum. In the opossum, the sphincter of Oddi exhibits spontaneous contractions that migrate distally along the sphincter and expels its contents into the duodenum. Although the motor activity of the sphincter of Oddi is independent from that of the duodenum, there is a correlation between the frequency of bursts of spike potentials in the sphincter of Oddi and the migrating motor complex phases in the duodenum. Abnormal motility of the sphincter of Oddi has been reported during endoscopic manometric evaluation of patients with choledocholithiasis and sphincter of Oddi dyskinesia. Patients with common bile duct stones have an increase in the frequency of retrograde propagation of phasic waves. Elevation of basal pressure as well as an increase in the frequency and amplitude of sphincter of Oddi phasic waves and the common bile duct-duodenum gradient pressure may occur in patients with sphincter of Oddi dyskinesia. Endoscopic manometric studies of the sphincter of Oddi may become an important method to diagnose sphincter of Oddi dyskinesia.
