Notes: A patient with carcinoid syndrome on long-term antiserotonin therapy with parachlorophenylalanine, experienced a flushing attack with hypotension during the prophylactic administration of aprotonin prior to the induction of anaesthesia. When she was subsequently prepared with a long-acting somatostatin analogue, octreotide (Sandostatin, Sandoz SMS 201–995), plasma levels of tumour-released hormones were reduced and anaesthesia for resection of hepatic metastases was uneventful. The advantages of an anaesthetic approach based on inhibition of carcinoid tumour activity, rather than antagonism of released hormones, are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Potentials for the cell without liquid junction $$H_2 ,Pt\backslash B(OH)_3 (m_1 ), MB(OH)_4 (m_2 ), MCl(m_3 )\backslash AgClAg$$ where M is sodium or potassium are reported over a range of ionic strength to I=3 mol-kg−1 at 5 to 55°C. Total boron concentration in the solutions was restricted to low levels to minimize formation of polynuclear boron species. Cell potentials are treated with the Pitzer ion interaction treatment for mixed electrolytes, with linear ionic strength dependence assumed for the activity coefficient of undissociated boric acid. Trace activity coefficients of sodium and potassium borates in chloride media are calculated at various temperatures.

Notes: Abstract The effects of a single administration of authentic prostaglandin A1 intravaginally in early pregnant hamsters were investigated. A single dose of 1 mcg/animal given on day 4 of pregnancy inhibited the appearance of embryonic swellings when observed on day 8 of pregnancy. A significant fall (p〈0.01) in FSH with a rise (p〈0.03) in prolactin concentration in the serum and no change in LH levels were observed. The pituitary content of prolactin showed a significant decrease (p〈0.0006) with no change in FSH and LH contents. Progesterone concentration in the serum was markedly reduced (p〈0.002), along with that of the ovaries (p〈0.01). The decline in progesterone concentration coincided with the absence of corpora lutea and the embryos. However, no change in ovarian weights was observed. These results indicate the contragestive potential of prostaglandin A1. It appears to act as a luteolytic agent by disrupting the luteotropic complex (FSH:prolactin ratio).

Notes: In this paper, the effects of selecting initial vectors on computation efficiency for a subspace iteration method are investigated. Four algorithms are used for selecting the initial vectors. First, arbitrary starting iteration vectors are chosen according to Bathe and Wilson's algorithm.1 In the other algorithms, the initial vectors are the retrieved eigenvectors from the Guyan and quadratic reduction methods. Improvement of the eigenvalue approximations of the subspace iteration method over reduction methods is presented. The computation effort is examined for the various algorithms used for initial iteration vectors.
