    Notes: A tandem mass spectrometric method is described which allows the assignment of stereochemistry to fragment ions comprising intact sugar subunits of larger glycosides without chemical degradation and product isolation by chromatography. The approach relies on the mass selection of the ‘sugar ion’ of interest followed by analysis of stereoselective fragmentation induced by low-energy collisional activation. The daughter ion spectra provide configurational fingerprints of the selected sugar ions which can be matched for identity with reference spectra obtained from suitable precursors of known stereochemistry. Glucose, mannose and galactose furnished the required set of the most important reference ions. By using peracetyl (and perdeuterioacetyl) derivatives, galactose was readily identified as the glycosidic sugar constituent of the (known) antibiotic papulacandin B and a further (unknown) congener.

    Notes: The coupling of glass capillary supercritical fluid chromatography to a high temperature GC/MS system via a micrometeradjustable glass capillary interface including an integrated pressure restrictor is described. With this coupling device, both complementary capillary chromatographic methods retain their full independence and flexibility.It is shown that in supercritical fluid chromatography glass fulfils all the requirements of a suitable support material. The preparation of narrow bore glass capillary columns (0.06 mm i.d.), coated with chemically bonded and crosslinked fluids with a film thickness of about 0.6 μm, which exploit the merits of OHterminated polysiloxanes as stationary phases is discussed. The application of glass capillary SFC is demonstrated and compared with examples given in the literature.

    Notes: The fast trace analysis method used to monitor 2,3,7,8-TCDD in stack gas during the incineration of the waste from Seveso is described. The sampling of volatile organic compounds from flue gases, distributed between all three aggregation states, is based on a micromethod developed for the trace analysis of water using a specially dimensioned adsorptive charcoal filter (1.5 mg charcoal). In conjunction with subsequent GC/MS measurements the rapid “fast cycle trace analysis” ensured specific 2,3,7,8-TCDD detection down to 100 pg per m3 flue gas in cycle times of about 1-2 hours.
