Notes: Summary Persistent infections with Sendai and SSPE virus were established in Vero cells. Sequential passages of these cells were monitored by immunofluorescence and for their sensitivity to the antiviral and antiproliferative effects of interferon (IFN). The cells rapidly developed resistance to the antiviral effect of IFN as judged by the inability of IFN to inhibit the replication of exogenous Sindbis virus. This decrease was accompanied by a reduction in the induction of the 2′–5′ oligo A synthetase. Both cell lines were resistant to the antiproliferative effect of IFN. A decrease or absence of IFN receptors on the surface of the cells was not found to be the cause of their resistance to IFN.

Notes: [Auszug] One approach to search for unrecognized hormone response systems is to systematically employ reduced stringency hybridiz-ation to screen recombinant DNA libraries for novel hormone receptors. The DNA-binding domain of the oestrogen receptor was used as hybridization probe in analysis of a AgtlO ...

Notes: Summary Asymptotic expansions of displacements in powers of a small parameter related to the shell thickness are re-derived with a view to investigating the way in which the leading terms depend on the thickness coordinate. The outcome of this preliminary study gives a hint concerning possible kinematic assumptions to be used as starting points for constructing thick shell theories. Then the problem of reducing the number of independent generalized displacements by enforcing all or part of the traction boundary conditions on the shell outer and inner surfaces is studied. Several thick shell theories are proposed and compared; the superiority of a certain generalized Kirchhoff-Love assumption is brought out in the particular case of circular cylindrical shells subjected to several types of thermal loadings.
