    Notes: Abstract Diel patterns of 14C-bicarbonate incorporation in〉5 μm algal communities were compared with those in cyanobacterial populations of Synechococcus spp. (0.6 to 1.0 μm), collected from the surface and/or chlorophyll maximum at three stations in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean (a neritic front; in Warm-Core Eddy 84-E; and Wilkinson's Basin) from 21 July to 8 August, 1984. Cell constituents were chemically separated into four fractions: lipids, low molecular weight (LMW) metabolites, polysaccharides/nucleic acids, and proteins. The in situ diel pattern of 14C assimilation was virtually the same for 〉5 μm algal communities adapted to different environments. Protein synthesis appeared to continue at a reduced rate at night using energy derived from the catabolism of polysaccharides and the mobilization of LMW compounds. Synechococcus spp. populations exhibited inherent physiological differences in their in situ diel pattern of carbon fixation from that in〉5 μm algal communities taken from the same water mass. There was no nighttime protein-synthesis in Synechococcus spp. The relative proportion of 14C-protein remained constant over night, while that of 14C-polysaccharides/nucleic acids declined and that of labelled LMW metabolites increased. Daytime light-intensity manipulations did not alter the diel pattern of carbon fixation in any of the〉5 μm algal assemblages, while changes in the carbon metabolism of surface and shadeadapted Synechococcus spp. populations could be rapidly induced by altering the light intensity.

    Notes: Summary Linkage data, using the polymorphic markers 52A (DXS51), F9, 4D-8(DXS98), and St14(DXS52), are presented from 14 fragile X pedigrees and from 7 normal pedigrees derived from the collection of the Centre d'Étude du Polymorphisme Humaine. A multipoint linkage analysis indicates that the most probable order of these four loci in normal families is DXS51-F9-DXS98-DXS52. Recombination frequencies ( $$\hat \theta $$ ) corresponding to maximum LOD scores ( $$\hat Z$$ ) were obtained by two-point linkage analysis for a nuber of linkage groups, including: DXS51-F9 ( $$\hat Z$$ =5.94, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.03), F9-DXS98 ( $$\hat Z$$ =0.51, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.26), F9-DXS52 ( $$\hat Z$$ =0.84, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.27), and DXS98-DXS52 ( $$\hat Z$$ =0.32, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.20). A multipoint linkage analysis of these loci, including the fragile X locus, was also performed for the fragile X population and the data support the relative order (DSX51, F9, DXS98)-FRAXA-DXS52. Recombination frequencies and maximum LOD scores, which again were derived from two-point linkage analyses, were obtained for the linkage groups DXS51-F9 ( $$\hat Z$$ =9.96, $$\hat \theta $$ =0) and F9-DXS52 ( $$\hat Z$$ =0.07, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.45), as well as for the groups DXS51-FRAXA ( $$\hat Z$$ =2.42, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.15), F9-FRAXA ( $$\hat Z$$ =1.30, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.18), DXS98-FRAXA ( $$\hat Z$$ =0.05 $$\hat \theta $$ =0.36), and DXS52-FRAXA ( $$\hat Z$$ =2.42 $$\hat \theta $$ =0.15). The linkage data was further tested for the presence of genetic heterogeneity both within and between the fragile X and normal families for the intervals DXS51-F9, F9-DXS52, F9-FRAXA, and DXS52-FRAXA using a modification of the A test. Except for the interval F9-FRAXA (P〈0.10) there was no evidence of genetic heterogeneity for each of the various linkage groups examined. The heterogeneity detected for the interval F9-FRAXA, however, was most likely due to one family (Fx-28) that displayed very tight linkage between these two loci.

    Notes: Results of dynamical convergent-beam reflection high-energy electron diffraction (CBRHEED) calculations are presented for the (001) surface of magnesium oxide, the (111) surface of silicon and the (001) surface of molybdenum disulfide. These double rocking calculations are performed using a dynamical scattering approach. This is based on the evaluation of the surface parallel multislice matrix for the reflection (i.e. Bragg) geometry with account taken of the boundary conditions. Comparison with experimental results reported in the literature for these surfaces shows that only a full dynamical calculation with an appropriate number of beams is capable of a detailed description of the experimental contrast distributions. In particular, the nature of surface-wave-resonance effects is discussed.

    Notes: The factors affecting spark ultraviolet (UV) emission and transmission, photoionization, and photoelectron loss mechanisms in CO2 TEA laser gas mixtures have been investigated and compared with the results of other workers. We found two different sources of UV radiation: N2 and an unidentified emitter, postulated to be associated with ionized electrode material; C (from CO and CO2) appeared to have little effect. UV emission was directly proportional to the amount of stored electrical energy in the spark-discharge circuit and to the cube of the peak current produced by the discharge of this energy. The uniformity of preionization produced by two kinds of spark-free space and notched surface guided was examined and the free-space spark was found to be superior. Photoionization was found to be due to the presence of low ionization potential (IP) alkenes in unseeded and fresh gas mixtures and also to NO and NO2 in sealed devices—these were formed as a result of spark plasma reactions. The nature of the photoionization process in NO and C3H6 (an alkene) was investigated; both were ionized in a single-step process. The absorption coefficient for ionizing radiation in CO2 was measured in a gas mixture containing 9% N2 and a N2 free mixture and values of 1.3 and 1.9 cm−1 atm−1 were obtained. It is thought that this may be due to changes in the spark UV emission spectrum when N2 is present. The loss of photoelectrons by third body attachment to NO, NO2, and O2 was monitored and only the attachment to O2 was found to be significant. However, the oxides of N can play a dominant role in the subsequent negative ion reactions on a millisecond timescale.

The active calcium-releasing compound inositol-(1,4,5)trisphosphate was detected together with its degradation products inositol-(1,4)bisphosphate and inositol monophosphate. All these products increased in response to noradrenaline stimulation.3. At noradrenaline perfusion times from 5 s to 20 min there was no appearance of inositol-(1,3,4,5)tetrakisphosphate or its degradation products: inositol-(1,3,4)trisphosphate or inositol-(1,3) and (3,4)bisphosphates.4. These data suggest the absence of the inositol-(1,4,5)trisphosphate phosphorylation/dephosphorylation pathway in heart.

    Notes: 1. Segments of the tail artery of the rat were cannulated at both ends and mounted in an organ bath filled with Krebs solution.2. Using an extracorporeal circuit, blood was pumped at a constant 2 ml/min from the carotid artery of anaesthetized rats to perfuse the segment of tail artery, and returned to the donor rat via the jugular vein.3. Peri-arterial electrical stimulation of the ex vivo blood perfused tail artery at 5 Hz produced vasoconstriction and an increase in perfusion pressure.4. The intravenous administration of frusemide 5 mg/kg to the donor rat resulted in an inhibition of the vasoconstrictor responses of the perfused tail artery segment. Diuresis-induced losses of volume and frusemide were prevented by a urinary bladder-venous shunt.5. Removal of the endothelium from the tail artery segment, by perfusion with dry gas for 4 min, prevented the vasoconstrictor-inhibitory effect of frusemide administration. Removal of the endothelium was confirmed histologically and by the absence of a vasodilator response to acetylcholine.6. On the basis of these and previous results it is concluded that parenteral frusemide administration releases an unidentified but non-prostanoid hormone from the kidney which produces an endothelium-dependent inhibition of sympathetic vascoconstriction.

    Notes: A Landau–Ginzburg Hamiltonian involving coupled sublattice magnetizations as order parameters for spontaneous metamagnets is studied. A brief review of the mean field results is followed by an analysis of the role of fluctuations which arise due to the inhomogeneity terms in the Hamiltonian. Using a Gaussian approach the specific heat contribution from the normal modes is studied neglecting mode-mode coupling. A non-Gaussian approach to the problem is also outlined. While for finite sizes specific heat shows no anomalies, in the thermodynamic limit classical exponents are recovered. The kinetics of the transition is described by the Euler–Lagrange equations for sublattice magnetizations which result in two nonlinearly coupled nonlinear Klein–Gordon equations. Special solutions obtained from a particular ansatz include solitons and elliptic waves whose physical interpretation is provided.

    Notes: Summary. Perineal sensory and motor function was investigated in 28 women with genuine stress incontinence of urine and compared with a matched control group. Electrosensitivity of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris and of the urethral mucosa was significantly diminished in these patients (eight measurements ‘insensitive’). Three different reflex latency measurements (dorsal nerve to external anal sphincter, dorsal nerve to urethral sphincter, urethral mucosa to external anal sphincter) were prolonged in incontinence (14 absent reflexes). Mean motor unit potential duration of the external anal sphincter was also prolonged, reflecting an early neuropathy. Anorectal manometry detected significantly weaker squeeze pressures in stress incontinence although other variables were unaffected.
